"Denny" Powell was born Aug. 10, 1913 in Twin Rock above Laytonville, Mendocino county, California. He passed away in Bakersfield on Aug. 18, 1994. He attended school at Twin Rock until he was about 10 or 11 years of age. Then his family moved to San Jose, Calif. When he was 16 or 17 years old, he moved back to the ranch at Twin Rock. His brothers and he worked part time in the woods and operated equipment. When World War II came, he joined the Army with his brother John and served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. After the war, he worked in and around Bakersfield and Santa Maria as a crane operator. He married Inez Rice on Aug. 1, 1946. They had two children, Darlene and Denise. In 1947, he joined Griffin Steel and supply and Griffin Steel Fabricators, and later became vice president. He also became owner of Powell Crane Services. In the two companies, he assisted in erecting hundred of buildings and structures from El Centro to Sacramento and San Francisco. He was an avid big game hunter and eagerly awaited the opening of each season. This did not hinder his extreme compassion for many humans in less fortunate circumstances than his own. An extremely honest person, he touched the lives of many people for the better. Survivors include his loving wife, Inez; daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Dr. Charles Salik, Denise and William McCarthy; a sister Ruth Rodaer of Sacramento and a brother, George Powell of Bakersfield. On Feb. 17, 1975 he married the former Arva Coffee, of Tupman in Utah, and after a honeymoon there, they returned to Tupman to make their home. In addition to his wife Arva, he is survived by a son, Mark Chester Yates; a daughter, Sarah Jean Yates, all of Tupman; four brothers, Orbin H. Yates of Garden Grove, Orvin Chester Yates of Tupman, Gayle Yates of Porterville, and Gordon W. Yates of Anaheim; and several uncles and aunts. He was preceeded in death by his parents. Rev. Dodson Dies; Top State Fire Boss Richard E. Dodson, who retired as assistant county fire chief in 1971 and was of the state's leading fire bosses of forest and watershed blazes, has died. Services will be held in J.W. Sams and Sons Mortuary in Tehachapi at 10 a.m. Thursday. Dodson, who died in his home in Tehachapi Dec 30, was a member of the county Fire Department for 33 years and commanded the watershed and desert areas of East Kern. He was fire boss of the 1970 Rankin fire on Breckenridge Mountain in 1970, the largest fire in county history. He directed the campaign that saved thousands of acres of timber and television and communication repeaters and endangered by the Rankin Fire. Dodson was a consultant to other fire departments on fighting watershed fires through the use of backburning. Much of his reputation as a top rural firefighter was earned during the 1940s.
