Now that the Godfrey Library is no longer able to offer the Historical Los Angeles Times (Proquest) online, has anyone found another source offering access? I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms. Karla in Bakersfield

This is from another list...Looks very interesting. Thanks to Joy for bringing it to our attention. http://archivegrid.org/web/jsp/index.jsp The Research Libraries Group has launched ArchiveGrid. "ArchiveGrid contains nearly a million archival collection descriptions held by hundreds of libraries, archives and museums." "A search result page includes a list of archive collections, a summary of the archives and archive locations that are represented in the collections, as well as a search box that enables the user to limit a search to a particular date range, an archive and/or the location of the archives. The description of each collection includes a title, the name of the archive, and some brief information from its description. Each entry also shows the users' search terms in context. The user can discover what archives have material on the topic by reviewing the summary of archives and archive location. Researchers who want more information about the archive or who want to contact it can click on the name of the archive in the collection description. The archive's name is linked to the ArchiveGrid database of archive information." Access is free until May 31st. http://archivegrid.org/web/jsp/ index.jsp Joy Rich Brooklyn, NY Member, Godfrey Memorial Library, http://www.godfrey.org
Database Los Angeles Times Obituary Index Years: 1988-1993, 1995 URL: www.scgsgenealogy.com The Southern California Genealogical Society has just added an valuable database to its website, www.scgsgenealogy.com. The database is a fully-searchable index of decedent names listed in obituaries and death notices published in the Los Angeles Times. The database currently covers the years 1988 through 1993 plus 1995, and eventually will be expanded to include a 20-year index. In addition to the standard obituaries and death notices, the index includes entries for In Memoriam, Cards of Thanks, Funeral Notices, etc. The online obituary index provides the name and year the notice was printed. The online index is available for use by all researchers at no charge. Individuals interested in obtaining a copy of the actual obituary or death notice can contact the Research Department of the Southern California Genealogical Society and request a copy for a nominal fee.
With another informative Lunch and Learn presentation and our very first session of the Kids' Genealogy Camp, March is an especially exciting month at the Southern California Genealogical Society. You'll find the speaker schedule, vendors, hotel arrangements, topics and speaker bios at www.scgsgenealogy.com. Don't miss the special event on Friday night - our banquet dinner and Cemetery Crawlin' with long-time favorite Bill Dollarhide. Lunch and Learn Saturday, March 11 12:00 noon - lunch 1:00 p.m. - learn "A Look at Courthouse Records" with Lois Burlo Free and open to the public The Courthouse handled all land transactions, the buying and selling of the property and the mortgage, if there was one. Because of the system used in Europe to divide an estate, land ownership was of prime importance from the very first settlement on the continent. Land grants were the big incentive to risk life and limb to cross the ocean. Because these records were more apt to survive, along with the tax records, land records are sometime the only way we can trace our ancestors. The courthouse is also keeper of birth, marriage and death records. When a person died, it provided for the recording of the person's will, which in turn contained the names of the heirs; the property the deceased owned - both land and household possessions, where the land was located and who was to receive it. Witnesses to the will may have been relatives or neighbors. Those are the most obvious of the courthouse records, but that's not all. It is rich in genealogy, if you know where to find it. ------------------------------------------------ German Interest Group Saturday, March 18 1:00 p.m. - "Message Boards" Free and open to the public ----------------------------------------------- French Canadian Heritage Society of California Sunday, March 19 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Doug Miller will give a presentation on the French Heritage DNA Project and demonstrate the project website: home.earthlink.net/~djmill/fcdna.html ------------------------------------------------ Kids' Genealogy Camp Sunday, March 26 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Free and open to the public with preregistration What a great way to introduce your children and grandchildren to genealogy. Are there anyone line divorce indexes for Los Angeles Co. for the mid 1930's? If not, where would I write and how much are records?
I would appreciate a death extraction (or obituary) look up for Ivan Charles "Charley" PACKER b. 1921 in Arizona and died March 20, 1928 in Long Beach. He was the son of Jonathan (John) T. Packer and Amy Jewell Packer. I have no idea where he was buried. His brother, Eli Carl Packer, died March 2, 1932 and I've been trying to locate his burial place. I was told Signal Hill which I've learned is Long Beach Municipal Cemetery but I find no online listing. At the time of Carl's death, the family was living at 1142 1/2 East Anaheim St. (Long Beach?) - Any help appreciated. Marti martiroe@pacbell.net
