    1. Re: [SOCAL] Robert LOCKHART in 1920 (in 1930 ??)
    2. Betty
    3. Hi Theresa, I'm sorry I was a little vague and didn't provide enough information for the Robert I was looking for (for someone else). The other gentleman and I are on the BHC List (Canada), and I am helping him find out about 3 LOCKHART siblings who arrived in Canada in 1884. They were born in Scotland -- Christina, b~1870, Robert, b~1871, and Colin, b~1872. He knows about Colin LOCKHART who remained in Canada and owned land in Ontario which he seemingly sold to his brother in 1898. But, in the 1901 Census, Robert LOCKHART is 27 and was lodging in British Columbia. (His look-up.) In 1901, Christina is 30 and living as a servant in Quebec Province. Colin died, unmarried, in 1949 in Saskatchewan. I have access to the U.S. Census, up to 1920, and I tried finding Robert in 1910 and 1920, and found a possible match in 1910. Robert was said to have been 36, born in Scotland, and living in Los Angeles ! He had a wife, Edith, and had been married for 5 years. There were other people in the home. (Edith might have had a child from a former marriage.) And, I initially thought the profession for Robert at that time was that he was an Iron worker, but I've been told that the handwriting actually says "own income." In 1920 all I found was a Robert LOCKHART living in Atolia, CA, Age 45, and working in a Silver Mine. It says he was married, but had no wife living with him. And, the other gentleman said that Robert was a "miner" while in Canada. I have no way of knowing whether I have "found" the correct Robert LOCKHART or whether the 2 mentioned above are the same man ! And, so far, we don't know if Robert and Edith had any children of their own. Thank you for any insight into this ! Betty P.S. The 3 LOCKHART siblings had 3 older siblings who seem to have remained in England. ----- Original Message ----- From: Theresa Griffin To: Betty ; SOCAL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, May 02, 2006 1:09 PM Subject: Re: [SOCAL] Robert LOCKHART in 1920 (in 1930 ??) Hi Betty, I think I found them. The Robert Lockhart that I sent you earlier was an electrical supply salesman. Look at the following three entries: Thomas Lockhart, single, age 37, living in Los Angeles County, La Rambla in 1930. He was a "roomer." This Thos. also listed his home as Canada English, both parents were Canada English as well. He was an office supply salesman, and he immigrated in 1923. It looks like he may have had a brother, Harry W., age 30, who was living with wife, Margaret, in Los Angeles County, Long Beach, in 1930. He was an oil laboratory worker and immigrated the same year, 1923. He gave the same information on his birth place and the birth places of his parents. His son, Reginald W., age 9, was living with them as well. Another brother may be Willie E. Lockhart, 36, living with his wife Florence, both Canada English. He immigrated in 1923. Willie was an electrical salesman as was the Robert Lockhart I sent you earlier. I think these three boys may be the children of Robert. I found a Franes (Frances?) Lockhart, a 53-year-old widower living in Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, also Canada English. He was a telephone repairman and immigrated in 1888. A Rose P. Butler, 29, of England who immigrated in 1918, was listed as a "lodger" in his home. Maybe this is a connection? Before I go further with this, it would be very helpful if you could tell us the names of the Lockhart children, if you know them. If not, do you at least know their genders? There are a lot of Lockharts in the area in the 1930 census. 1. KIDDER's in CA ! (Riverside ??)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I'd just like to post a general query about KIDDER's in CA ! Most KIDDER's in the U.S. are descended from the patriarch, James KIDDER (1626-1676) of Cambridge and Billerica, MA. He and his wife (Anna MOORE) had 12 children, and some of their children had 12 children, and so the story continued. In 1941 the NEHGS published a book on the descendants of "Ensign James KIDDER" and it is a very good reference. For at least 12 years, George KIDDER in FL has been trying to update that book. He is in the last stages of preparing a manuscript of the "updated version" to go off to a publisher at the end of the year (hopefully). If anyone has KIDDER information which might not be in the KIDDER book, and would like to see it included in the new version, please contact George. This is his KIDDER web site and his contact information is there: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1255/1255.htm I'd also like to mention that I had a great-uncle who left New England, probably in the 1950's, and went to CA ! When his mother, Mrs. Louise (RICE) KIDDER, died in her home-town of Winchester, MA, in 1958, he wrote to say that he was then living in Riverside, CA. His name was George "Sanford" KIDDER, Jr., b1904 Winchester, MA. He didn't remain close to his family after he became an adult, so we know very little about him. But, I did find out that he died in Riverside in the 1960's. I requested a look-up for his "death notice" and found out it mentioned a wife and children ! I'm fairly positive this would have been a wife and step-children. I don't have the information handy, but the lady seems to have been a widow from Nova Scotia, and I believe her children had been born in Nova Scotia. (If anyone is interested, I will pull out my folder of papers on "Uncle Sanford" and retrieve the names.) Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: Great-uncle, Sanford, had a nephew, Silas "Dean" LEWIS, Jr., who also left New England around 1950. In fact, he "disappeared without a trace." It was only through the Internet that we found out that Uncle Dean died in Phoenix, AZ, in the 1990's ! "Dean" LEWIS' obituary also mentioned "children" (probably step-children), but did not mention a wife. He probably lived in or near Phoenix for quite a while, but we don't know where he lived from 1950 .. to say the 1970's ! And, we don't know whether Uncle Dean and Uncle Sanford "traveled west" together ! (My father's brother, and their uncle.)

    1. LEWIS and TALMADGE in Gardena, early 1900's
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I have just rejoined to ask if anyone knows anything about the families of siblings, John S. LEWIS and Mrs. Helen TALMADGE, who moved to CA around 1930 and seem to have settled in Gardena ! They were 2 of 13 siblings growing up in Stoneham, MA. After the deaths of their parents, John "Stanley" LEWIS and Mary (CORKILL) LEWIS, in 1923 and 1924, the siblings seem to each go their separate way ! John LEWIS seems to have gone out to CA as a single, young man and married Genevieve Grace HAMILTON out there. They had several children, and John died there in the 1960's. _____ and Helen (LEWIS) TALMADGE seem to have married in or near Stoneham, MA, and gone out to Gardena, CA, within a few years after. They did have children. Helen died during the 1980's, I believe, and her husband's name was not mentioned in the death-notice. So, my guess is that, either he died young or they had divorced. This year I requested a look-up from the Gardena Library, and they very kindly worked hard and found the death notices of John and Genevieve LEWIS and of Mrs. Helen TALMADGE. I can post the information from them at another time if anyone is interested. For several years I have been trying to complete a list of the 13 siblings, with their spouses and children's names. Since as adults they were not really close, this has been a difficult challenge. The parents, John "Stanley" LEWIS and Mary CORKILL were born in Liverpool, England, and in 1874 were "shipped to Canada" as "British Home Children." They married in Truro, NS, in 1879, and in 1881 migrated to Massachusetts. I believe the other 11 siblings remained in New England, but I still cannot find some of them after the 1920's ! Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. My grandfather was one of the younger of the 13 siblings, and John was his younger brother.

    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I am trying to help a researcher in Canada try to find out what happened to 3 LOCKHART children - who arrived in Canada as "British Home Children." I did a look-up for him, and found a possible match-up with a Robert LOCKHART living in or near Los Angeles in 1910 and 1920. For his occupation, I am having trouble reading the handwriting. It seems to be: Iron Inc ____ in a New____ or Rew_____ (place of work). I was wondering if anyone knew what that occupation was ! Was there an Iron Foundry in or near LA at that time? In 1920 Robert was working in a Silver Mine ! Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. For more information on the "British Home Children," please visit this web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~britishhomechildren/ And, check out all the other web sites on the subject in the "links" area. In general, between ~1860 and ~1930, over 100,000 children were shipped out of Great Britain and shipped to Canada - to live in homes, "homes," or farms. In England, they were called "child migrants." Many more were sent to Australia !

    3. Hi Betty, I show a 43-year old married, salesman, Robert R. Lockhart, with no children and a 36-year old wife Margaret, born in Kentucky; they were living in Los Angeles County, Beverly Hills in 1930. The information says he was immigrated in 1910 and was Canada-English, as were his mother and father. He was married at 39 and had no children. I show a 50-year-old, unmarried, farmer, Robert and a single 18-year-old son, James Lockhart, living in Marin County, Point Reyes Station in 1930. The information says he was born in Northern Ireland, as were his mother and father. He immigrated to the US in 1900. These are the only two showing up as being foreign born in the 1930 census in California. Email me for more particulars if either of these is the correct person. Hello, As per my other posting, a Canadian researcher is trying to find out whether the Robert LOCKHART living in or near Los Angeles around 1910 to 1920 is the person he is looking for information on ! (Arriving in Canada as a "British Home Child" in 1884.) I found him on census forms in 1910, with a wife and other people in his household. And, to both of us, the information is .. not really correct ! In fact, the information seems "way off." I was wondering if someone with access to the 1930 census could see if he was still living in southern CA and which data is found for him then ! He would like to find out if Robert LOCKHART had any descendants. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) ==== SOCAL Mailing List ==== Do NOT post virus notices to the list.
