The San Gabriel Valley Tribune and Whittier Daily News report that the board of director of Savannah Cemetery (formerly known as El Monte Cemetery) is meeting today to discuss the future of the cemetery which is experiencing financial difficulties. Apparently, $40,000 + is required annually to maintain the cemetery. The cemetery was founded in the 1840's and has more than 3,000 graves. The state has refused to grant historical status to the cemetery. "Pioneer cemeteries are a dime a dozen" is what the state told the board of directors. Neither Rosemead nor El Monte will enter the fray. If I recall correctly, names like Wiggins, Maxson and Durfee are to be found there. Gary Radcliffe

From this seemingly-unrelated beginning New York's Castle Garden evolved to become America's first immigrant processing center. This center served the port of New York from 1855 to April 18, 1890. It was the doorway into America for millions of immigrants in its 34 years 3 months and 18 days of existence. Then, overnight, in spite of the almost 1,000 immigrants waiting for processing on April 19th, the State of New York closed Castle Garden! What happened? She will discuss the basics of cladograms, and show how they can be used as a convenient tool for interpreting your group's DNA results. She will draw on her six years' experience as the group administrator of the Fitzpatrick DNA study to demonstrate general features of cladograms and how they indicate the history and development of a surname. The talk will be geared to all levels of interest. She is the author of Forensic Genealogy and co-author with Andrew Yeiser of DNA & Genealogy. The morning session will be the speaker; the afternoon session will have split groups for newcomers and experienced participants. Lunch options: bring your own or order pizza as a group. So much is going on at SCGS that I'm going to break this email into two parts. This is Part 1. ANNOUNCEMENTS The BIGGEST news is that the dates for JAMBOREE 2007 have been set! The 38th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree and Resource Expo will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 8, 9, and 10, 2007, at the Burbank Airport Hilton. That's right -- three days! Be on the lookout for more information soon, but save the dates now. The first publications to be generated by the 1890 Committee have just been released. The Naturalization Index of the Superior Court for Los Angeles County, California includes every "naturalization transaction" with each alien that occured in this court only between 1852 and 1915. The index includes more than 40,000 entries, with close to 27,000 unique names and more than 350 countries or combinations of countries or origin, i.e., Hungary-Canada-Great Britain. Compiled by the 1890 Committee of the Southern California Genealogical Society. Softbound. The three volumes are available for purchase individually or as a set and can be ordered through the SCGS website at www.scgsgenealogy.com/catalog Jay Holladay has agreed to lead a RootsMagic Interest Group at the Library. If you're a RootsMagic user and are interested in joining the Interest group, please email Jay at jholladay@comcast.net. No meeting dates have been set yet. Saturday, June 24, we will be holding an open house to welcome the 100+ new members that joined the Society since the first of the year. Most of these new members joined when they registered for Jamboree, during Jamboree, or shortly thereafter. We welcome all the new members and look forward to seeing everyone on the 24th. Drop in any time from 11am to -2pm at the Library. Wine, cheese and goodies will be served, and Board, Committee, and Interest Group leaders will be on hand to explain the various activities of SCGS. The Library is open that day for research, too, so please stop by and greet the new members. You might find a cousin! The Historical LA Times newspaper database is available online at the SCGS Library in Burbank. Unfortunately, due to restrictions placed by the owners of the content, The Tribune Companies, we are unable to make this database available for use from home. However, our SCGS members are welcome to come to the Library and use the database at no charge. The Volunteer Luncheon was held on Saturday, June 10. Photos from that event will be posted very soon on the website. Our deepest thanks goes out to the many volunteers who help keep the Library and Society running. The Society is run 100% by volunteers, and we couldn't operate without them. Jumping ahead to September, the SCGS USED BOOK SALE will be held Saturday, September 30, 2006 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the library parking lot. Please start to clean out your bookshelves and bring your books to the library before September 1. Then come to the sale and refill those empty spots! Books sold at the sale benefit the library book collection. Hardback and paperback books of all types are wanted and they do not need to be related to genealogy. Please, no periodicals. I suppose by finding where Hope is buried an inquiry could be made as to whether he is currently ensconsed in a tomb or will be if indeed one is being built. Superstar Bob Hope (1903-2003) was buried at San Fernando Mission Cemetery on the morning of July 30, 2003. Mrs. Hope said that when she asked Bob where he would like to be buried, he said (with his typical wry humor) "Surprise me." The choice of San Fernando certainly surprised most observers, who had expected that he would probably be buried either at _Holy Cross_ (http://www.seeing-stars.com/Buried2/HolyCross.shtml) (the largest Catholic cemetery in L.A.) or _Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills_ (http://www.seeing-stars.com/Buried2/ForestLawnHollywood1.shtml) (near his _home_ (http://www.seeing-stars.com/Buried2/SanFernando.shtml#) in Toluca Lake). San Fernando is a beautiful cemetery, but its location is somewhat remote. According to a family spokesman, Bob Hope's casket was temporarily placed into a mausoleum vault. Burial will come later when a family grotto is finished (his mother is also buried here.). **************************** Update: in July of 2005, the remains of Bob Hope were moved from the temporary crypt at San Fernando Cemetery, and moved next door to the San Fernando Mission itself. There, a special garden was created next to the Mission's main chapel. The garden has a statue of "Our Lady of Hope" (a minor pun, for a major comic), as well as a wall featuring bronze replicas of photos of Bob, plus, of course, the mausoleum where Bob Hope is actually buried (along with his wife and other family members). A stone path leads from the mission'smain chapel to the new Bob Hope garden.
According to findagrave.com, he already has a tomb and memorial garden at Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana, so it seems unlikely he'd be getting a new one: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=7716821 On Mon, 12 Jun 2006, mt view wrote: > Was on a tour of Mt. Hello George, So I assume that since the docent didn't know any details Mr. Hope isn't buried there. I'd have assumed too that Bob Hope would have assured his immortality with an appropriate tomb. I would have thought that said tomb would have been completed before he died so he could see and approve it. I suppose by finding where Hope is buried an inquiry could be made as to whether he is currently ensconsed in a tomb or will be if indeed one is being built. Sorry, that¹s about all I can offer. There is an Inglewood Park Cemetery located between Florence and Manchester Aves. on Prarie Ave in Inglewood. My aunt and uncle used to live a couple blocks from there. The Los Angeles Coliseum, where the 1932 and 1984 Olympics were held, is not all that far from there.
Inglewood Park Cemetery 720 East Florence Avenue 3803 West Manchester Blvd. Ingldwood, CA 90301 (310) 412-6500 It's a large cemetery that runs between Florence Ave. and Manchester Ave, there are two entrances. The main office is at the Florence entrance.
