Thanks for those of you who provided feedback as necessary. Two issues that came up with digests: 1) All digest subscribers were defaulted to MIME attachments which is particularly problematic for AOL-ers. I switched all AOL-ers who were subbed to digest to "plain". If you are an AOL-er who prefers your digests as MIME attachments, let me know and I'll switch you back individually. 2) If you are a digest subscriber but not an AOL -er and you want your digests in text, let me know and I'll switch you. Thanks for a much more likely explanation. I knew Mencken was too busy to get everything right. His book was published in 1934. Gary
Hi Yvonne, I belong to the Digest mode, and have not done anything to change that. But, I just received a "strange" Digest which says it is from the "List" mode ! Betty, This is not the digest and I'm not sure how you got it! We've been having trouble with digests during the beta test (seems to be OK now). Anyway, did you receive Vol. 1 Issue 1 (5 messages - one of which was the one below) sent midnight June 29? Folks, the beta test migration of SOCAL-L from SmartList to Mailman software occurred a few minutes ago. I'm still checking out the admin pages but there are a few changes you should know about right away: 1) The admin address is now SOCAL-L-admin@rootsweb.com (no longer SOCAL-admin@rootsweb.com). Please address ANY issues you see with the way you are receiving your list mail, digests, or other comments/concerns to BOTH SOCAL-L-admin@rootsweb.com AND ybowers@comcast.net so I'm sure to get the message. 2) Currently you can subscribe to the list in one or both modes (list or digest) using the same address. Now you can only be subscribed in one or the other (not both) using one address so I believe if you were subbed to SOCAL in both, you will be converted to list. Any of you experiencing this change, let me know. 3) The delay was caused by retooling the digests. If you are on digest version and see any anomalies, let me know. SOCAL is a list for discussion of history and genealogy in SOuthern CALifornia. Please send any issues regarding the beta directly to me, not to the list. I'll try to keep updates to a minimum and will use beta in the subject line so those who wish to may delete without reading. -- Yvonne Bowers, Sonoma, CA. I have copies of the 1925, 1926, 1927, and 1928 Polytechnic HS (Los Angeles) yearbooks and would be happy to do lookups. Please put Polytechnic HS lookup -- or some such -- in the subject line so that your request doesn't get lost among the spam The books are up for auction, so this offer is good for as long as I have the books --Laurel

Folks, You'll remember I posted a message a week or so ago about beta testing a new software for adminning the rootsweb lists, one of which was SOCAL. Just to update you, there was a problem with how digests were working in the new software so the beta testing has not been started yet. I'll let you know when we proceed. Again, you should see little or no change on the daily operation of the list. -- Yvonne Bowers, Sonoma, CA.
