    3. I agree, I have not seen the old addresses with a street. I our old address the first number was the route and the second number was the box number. (Rt X Box yyy) Recently I read that RFD was Rural Federal Delivery, I had always heard Free also. George -----Original Message----- From: Lester M Powers [mailto:lesterps@juno.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 25, 2000 12:10 AM To: SOCAL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RFD address decoding Hello, all I need some help to decode whatever this address was supposed to mean: 811 RFD 7705 Los Feliz Road where the 0 in 7705 is sorta kinda like a superscript 0 with a little line drawn under it. The time for the above address was 1911, and the place was probably the Los Feliz district just south of Griffith Park, or Atwater Village, or south Glendale (north of downtown Los Angeles, of course). Why are there TWO numbers in the above address??? I know that RFD means Rural Free Delivery, but nothing else. Actually, I would expect a rural (farm) address to have no street number at all. So, what are the numbers, and why two of them? They appear in a birth certificate. Thank you. Lester Powers lesterps@juno.com

    1. SYDNEE BLIZZARD ROTHAFEL
    2. I am looking for some marriage records on ROTHAFEL. Here is what I have on them. Sydnee BLIZZARD (daughter of Adrian Thomas Blizzard and Caroline Norton Blizzard) born 1/12/1913 Stanislaus CO. CA. Syndee married a Mr. Rothafel, don't know where or when. I found Sydnee Rothafel in the SSDI. She died 6/29/2000 at Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz CO. CA. I did not know if Santa Cruz was the NORCAL or SOCAL board. They had the following children: Charles Robert Rothafel - b. 3/31/1944 in LA CO. Roxane Louise Rothafel - b. 3/18/1946 in LA CO. Carolyn Robin Rothafel - b. 5/12/1949 in LA CO. I need any information that I can possibly get. I haven't been able to find out who the children married or what happened to them, or grandchildren either. When Sydnee Blizzard Rothafel's father (Adrian Thomas Blizzard) died in 1951, his obituary mentioned that she was living in Orinda, CA at that time. Any information would be appreciated greatly. 3. For years the Postal Service has been trying to do away with all the RFD addresses and change them into real addresses(Road and number) that visitors and new postal employees CAN FIND. Perhaps this was an inbetween "fix" until folks got used to the new system? Is 7705 Los Feliz an actual address? Is 811 RFD the old rural route number? Dunno. How about checking with the post office in the area---or, perhaps, a very retired rural carrier or other employee from that area? 3. Hello everyone on the Southern California Mailing List, I am making a personal plea for any assistance in the New Mexico Death Index Project. This Project will be hosted by Rootsweb, the same organization which is hosting this and many other mailing lists. There are two ways, volunteering in typing in the database or a donation to the photocopying fund. A donation of any amount (one dollar, 10 or 25 dollars) are most welcomed, as we do need funds to continue this project. with out everyone help, this project might not be completed. Also, can you forward this e-mail to any people to make this project known, and the crucial need for peoples' help in this project. Below is a copy of the website set up for the project or click on: http://www.nmia.com/~samquito/nmdi.html Thank you for taking your important time in reading this e-mail. With Regards, Sam-Quito - New Mexico Death Index Project Many thanks for your interest about the New Mexico Death Index Project. The project is being sponsored by Rootsweb and headed by myself. There are two books of death indices are available via the FHC (Family History Center) in Salt Lake City. This project will be typing up an assigned letter or letters in one or both books (via photocopies). When all the letters are completed, Rootsweb will be hosting the NM Death Index on-line for any New Mexican Researcher. Take a look at California’s Death Index on-line, hosted by Rootsweb at to see how the New Mexico Death index will look at: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi We are looking for people whom have MS Excel or MS Works programmes to volunteer and be assigned a letter in the alphabet and type the database. The books are in alphabet order by surname, not by county or date of death. The FHC only has two films of each film for rental. Send any donation to: Sam Padilla G. 1520 Univ. BL.NE#314 Albqu., NM 87102-1720 (and make the cheque or money order to: Sam Padilla G.) 3. hello there, about death cert transcriptions for los angeles county, i believe there is only one person whom does these transcriptions for this county. a wonderful woman named deborah story. i had the pleasure to met her on a trip last month, which she had shown me around the register's office in norwalk. i will tell you of what i remember what deborah had taught me. the earlier records (up to 1960's) are held in individual books (by years) and they are not alphabetized, but entered by date (not of death but when received at the health department). and there were some books for the county and different books for the city of los angeles. ss# does not help in locating the person, but where they died. the ss record states where they resided, but they might not of died in that county, as i came across (a couple of relatives lived in los angeles county, but died in hospitals in orange county). but the date from ss# tell you when he died. good luck in your research. bye for now, sam-quito ************************************************************************* A message from Sam-Quito Padilla G. at: samquito@nmia.com We need donations & volunteers for the NM Death Index Project. 3. Nancy,, The sad truth is that there is really no good way to get L.A. obits. I flirted with the idea last year of charging for obits, but what I found was that only about 10% of the people that I looked for even had obits. I eventually stopped looking for ANY elderly deaths at all, (rest homes don't pay for obits), and then I stopped doing any look-ups after 1980. The L.A Times charges $45 per 1/4 hour for look-up's, and they don't guarantee they will find them. I charged way less, but never made more than $75 in six months! Now I only do look-up's if it is a death that would have "DEFINITELY" made the papers, like a murder, death of a prominent person, accidental death, etc. Joe --- Nancy Posey <heisable@mindspring.com> wrote: > Hi List, I do need some clarifiaction. > > Obituaries > Is there a public library that will do lookups in > Los Angeles County. Spadra was named after Uncle Billy Joe Rubottom's home town in Arkansas. He ran the Butterfield Stage stop in Spadra for many years. He is buried in the Spadra Cemetery with wife and daughter. It's a tiny cemetery and I wouldn't know how to get to it today without calling the sheriff's office. It's below Elephant Hill and completely surrounded by civilization now. Very sad.
