I would very much like to have a transcript of the death certificate for Maud Christ, died December 15, 1950. Thank you ever so much. Dave Hug in CA http://userzweb.lightspeed.net/davey
I went to a Long Beach Historical Tour of the above cemetery last Saturday. It was a interesting experience for me since I have family members in this cemetery. My grandmother, Ruby Myers and grandfather, Alvin Myers are buried there. Also a infant brother of mine is burried there, Donald Lyng. The tour consisted of several gravesites being talked about and people acting as the buried one telling about their lives. This cemetery was started in 1906 and has alot of ornate markers which are very interesting. This site is on Signal Hill where oil is drilled. This cemetery is a landmark in Long Beach. If anybody is interested in looking up anybody here, please send me a email and I'll be happy to help. Thank you, Suzanne (Lyng) Lenahan E-Mail: SLena78475@aol.com

That's unbelievable, Jeff. No gravestone for Louis Rubidoux! One of the most well-known figures in local history and he has no stone. Perhaps something should be done about this. I wonder if he has many descendants in the area and if they are aware of this. Gary Radcliffe

I found that if you go to http://www.forestlawn.com/parks.htm, it gives all locations and a toll free number to call. They were very helpful when I called and were willing to lookup the names and dates I gave them and also gave me a name that was in the family plot that I didn't even know about and am still trying to figure out. I first tried 555-1212 but I had trouble there (I have used that a lot in the past), that is why I went to Google.com. It is good to know of various places to search. Its still there and busy as heck Sam. Its a rehab facility now. Every Friday they see and treat patients that are suffering from Post Polio Syndrome. They see 12 a day. They are so busy, that you have to wait 5 months to get an appointment. I will send you some information on what all is going on now at Rancho Los Amigos Sam. I am pretty sure that it hasn't been sold. My wife's next appointment there is in Feb. 2001. Will email some info off to you tomorrow. to everyone and joe walker, my apologies for sending out the e-mail addressed to joe walker on the mailing list. it was only to be sent to him. sorry! sam-quito
hello joe, i do not mean to be rude, but this is not the "joe walker" mailing list. all the people on this mailing list are here to help each other, and i do not remember any formal etiquette of the mailing list, just to out help others searching for answers. this is the second e-mail you have addressed to myself. joe, if you do not wish to assist anyone whom is searching for help, please don't send sarcastic responses. if you are not happy to read or help out on the mailing list, why are you on this mailing list. i do not need instruction on how to type. the message i am sending is more important than how i type the message. i will not be changing the way i do type, and if you do not wish to read what i use (or misuse) the english language, just use your delete. accept this as constructed criticism. sam-quito ps: i do not have access to internet access, only e-mail access. I must go to the university to have access to the internet. so a simple check on the internet at 4am is a bit difficult! -----Original Message----- From: Joe Walker <joe_walker_2000@yahoo.com> To: Sam-Quito Padilla G. <samquito@nmia.com>; SOCAL-L@rootsweb.com <SOCAL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, November 02, 2000 8:56 AM Subject: Re: Los Angeles County Farm >Sam... > >(Hoping we can very nicely remind him that proper >capitalization in E-mail posts is considered good >manners) > >Rancho Los Amigos is NOT in Norwalk, it is in Downey. >A simple Switchboard.com or Yahoo search will confirm >this. > >Joe
hello terry, thank you for your e-mail. i could of sworn that rancho los amigos was off of imperial in norwalk. i just gave my father a ring and he said that i am getting ranchos los amigos mix up with the place my grandmother died in norwalk on imperial (another convalescent home). sorry about the mistake. can you tell me what is left of ranchos los amigos. my father said that a japanese firm has bought up the land and plan to make a golf course in the area, and only very little of rancho los amigos is still there. i asked you this question, as 2 of my mother's uncles (just discovered she had aunts and uncles living in the los angeles area), had lived there (she did not know that she was related to them men). i want to get more info from them about these men (family members, etc.). thank for your time. bye for now, sam-quito ************************************************************************* A message from Sam-Quito Padilla G. at: samquito@nmia.com We need donations & volunteers for the NM Death Index Project. Rancho Los Amigos is definitely in western Downey. However, last I heard TB is ***VERY*** contageous, and it would not surprise me if (*IF*) the hospital had a TB ward somewhere off the main property, perhaps in Norwalk. That I don't know. What I DO know is that there is no way TB patients would be kept anywhere near the regular staff and regular patients. Back in high school, 1960s, I was a volunteer for awhile at L.A. Harbor General Hospital, at a lab in a temporary building away from the main building. One day my assigned errands changed, and my erranding route changed. I was instructed by my boss at the lab that my new route went by the TB ward, and I was instructed to keep away from the doors and windows (which were all closed, if not sealed, all the time) and not to stop outside the ward under any circumstances. If I got too near the ward, or if I stopped outside the ward for any reason, I would be fired. I followed orders. Three years later, when I transferred into the University of California, I had a mandatory TB test on entry. Next day, when the test was checked, I was **ORDERED** to report for a second test **NOW** because the first test was positive. I told the doc the above story -- and the second TB test was OK, or at least not too damning, so I was allowed to enter the university, but it was a close one. I rather imagine that a decade earlier, in the 1950s, the hospitals would have been even more strict about isolating TB patients. So, the TB ward could have been anywhere EXCEPT among the regular patients. Lester ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! I received the following from a descendant of Isaac Slover in Texas:Gary, I read that at sometime in the past, the markers were wooden crosses and they burned during a fire. The church might have some idea of the burials. You know, I thought about writing to the Portland Concrete Company but just never have. The Hadler book says, "In Nov. 1828, Isaac was issued a pass to go back to Sonora. In 1843, a party of colonizers from N. Mex., commanded by Don Jose Salazar arrived at La Politano and founded a village known as Agua Mansa (healing water). Isaac settled at San Bernardino at the south base of the mountain that bears his name." Another passage in the book relates a story about the mountain. "It is said that an old Mexican, perhaps Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor, owned the land which now takes in several cities and when the time came to divide his lands among his children, he gave the lands which were under cultivation to his sons and a daughter received Slover Mt. Later, marble and limestone were discovered and the daughter made a fortune. From Westways Magazine, June 1958 - The Mountain They Put in Sacks: Lime kilns went into operation in the late 1850's; Marble was mined by 1861. This mountain which once rose more than 700 ft. above the surrounding plain, was called "Tahualta-pa" or "Hill of the Ravens" by the Indians; "Cerrito Solo" or "Lone Hill" by the Spaniards." That tells a little about the mountain and the location of Isaac's cabin. As to the double burial, I thought maybe they moved Isaac's grave to the churchyard when they started serious mining on the mountain. Haven't a clue if that is really what happened though. Later, Cathey
