The name "Sawtelle" is usually applied to the "old soldiers' home" there, though strictly speaking, "Sawtelle" is the name of the town, not the old soldiers' home. The old soldiers' home at (next to, but not in) Sawtelle is now the ENORMOUS Veterans' Administration complex there (on L.A. County land). Around 1919 or so, if your friend's relative was an old geezer, chances are he was at the home, otherwise if a youngun, at the town of Sawtelle. Sawtelle (the town) was annexed to the City of Los Angeles in 1922. It remains a part of the City of L.A. > for 1920 census does anyone have a clue as to how that > area was listed in Los Angeles Co.? I'm assuming it > was L. A. Co. I have a long-lost great or great-great uncle, Frederick Bartels, who, according to family legend (only) was at the L.A. "old soldiers' home," during the 1920s and/or 30s or so. The CADI does list a Frederick J. Bartels who died in L.A. on February 26, 1932, age 76 (which is about the right age for my Fred). I looked up Frederick J. Bartels in the 1920 census, and he is listed as at the "National Military Home" in "MALIBU TOWNSHIP." This Malibu stuff makes no sense, but that's what the 1920 census page says (supervisor's district 8, enumeration district 486, too). One of these years I'm going to try to get a copy of the old soldier Frederick J. Bartels' death certificate, but I sooooo procrastinate. Sigh. Anyway, presumably Sawtelle was in Malibu Township. That part of Sawtelle that was for the old soldiers, on the 1920 census, is enumeration district 486, LDS FHL microfilm number 1,820,116 -- for my Fred anyway. If you go *way* back in time, to the late 1800s, Sawtelle would have been in La Ballona Township. 3. Sawtelle certainly was a "town" - the Sawtelle Disabled Veteran's Home was in it. The Sawtelle Soldier's Cemetery is now the Los Angeles National Cemetery at 950 S. Sepulveda Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90049. Everything around there is called "Sawtelle" - Sawtelle Self Storage, Japanese Institute Of Sawtelle, Sawtelle Books & Music, etc. I'm not sure what exact area the community encompassed, but the USGS shows Sawtelle on the same map as West Los Angeles. Seams its on both sides of the 405 freeway, near UCLA. GAR has a post in Sawtelle: http://www.users.bigpond.com/bcrompton/caposts.htm http://pmiller7.home.mindspring.com/GGGrandma.jpg.html http://www.mdle.com/ClassicFilms/BTC/direct19.htm Donna Hull wrote: > > Hi-- > > Need some help here. 3. Seems to me I remember Sawtelle as the name of a Veteran's Admin. Hospital in that area. It might not even still be operational, I don't believe it was ever a city. 1. An ON-LINE Book Site worth looking into.....Louise King
    2. Hi all......I found these ON-LINE sites in my weekly SCOUT REPORT On-Line Books Page. The second site when you scroll down on this page is about “censored books”......both worth going to. Have fun... xxxxooo Louise King La Jolla, CA http://digital.library.upenn.edu/books/ Originally reviewed in the July 1, 1994 _Scout Report_, the On-Line Books Page has expanded considerably in the intervening six years. Edited by John Mark Ockerbloom since its inception, the site has moved with him in 1999 from Carnegie Mellon to Penn and has increased its listings from about 300 when Scout first visited the site to over 12,000 today. The site only indexes books (all located at other sites) that are full text, free, and not copyrighted. Users can search the listings by author and title, or browse by author, title, subject, new listings, or by serial archives. The site also offers three special exhibits: A Celebration of Women Writers, Banned Books On-Line, and Prize Winners On-Line (under construction). In addition, the site includes a collection of links to other electronic text resources and a list of works in preparation is also provided. An excellent portal for e-books of all kinds. http://www.lib.virginia.edu/exhibits/censored/ This companion site to a current exhibition at the University of Virginia Library Special Collections Department explores the history of censorship in America with a selection of books and items drawn from the Library. The exhibit is navigated via a pull-down menu, each section exploring censorship of a particular work, person, or medium with text and images. These include Margaret Sanger, _Grapes of Wrath_, Silenced Minorites, children's books, Elvis, and Censored Film, among others. Rather than focus exclusively on banned books, the site casts a wide net over the subject with excellent results. Well worth a visit.

    1. Kern county help please
    2. Carole Beth Arnette
    3. I need a lookup please, please. Would someone please check the Bakersfield or Kern city/county directories for this name, ca 1940-1950. Am looking for all ARNET, ARNETT, ARNETTE names. Persons: 1. Clyde E. ARNETTE. Marcheta and David ARNETTE. Marcheta, wife, David the 2-5 y/o child. I rather doubt David would be listed. This is the first real lead we have had. Clyde's occupation unknown, maybe mechanic, body and fender person. 2. Any other ARNETTE, ARNET, ARNETTs. I found a photo of David as a child, maybe 2-4, caption "Arnette land in Bakersfield." Not dated. If someone finds this any listings, please let me know, would pay for expenses to Xerox it. While I am asking, would someone please 1920 on. I don't believe I ever saw that name in the 1920 census, living in Kern county. Hoping so much to hear. Carole Beth Arnette San Antonio, TX

    3. Since I don't know the county, I can't be more specific ... use www.vitalrec.com or www.vitalchek.com & either order on line , or use their information to contact the relevant county directly. If you don't know the county, try at the on-line CADI (Calif. Death Index). I believe that's available at ancestry.com. It will have at least the county, & depending on the year, various other info. You could also enter "Fowler" into www.55-1212.com or a searcher (Yahoo, AltaVista) & they would lead you to the county. Pauline -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Lost Bakersfield Letters of 1901 Date: Thu, 9 Nov 2000 11:17:55 EST From: Gfletcher2000@aol.com To: hummingbird@igalaxy.net Dear Pauline: I am trying to find the family of some letters I found literally on the street in the 1970's. They were written by a man named Norton Moor who was working in the Bakersfield Oil Fields (Peerless). Two letters were to his mother and one to his grandmother. They are wonderful, adorable, sweet letters filled with descriptions of life working in the oil fields. Throughout the years I have put ads in the newspaper and made numerous telephone calls all over the country trying to locate the family; recently I have posted notices on websites, all to no avail. Do you have any ideas? Thank you, Gloria Fletcher
