If someone in the Ojai area wouldn't mind transcribing a couple of obituaries for me I would appreciate it very much. Hope someone finds this of interest. Josephine was my great-grandmother, who emigrated from Illinois to California in 1863. This is the verbatim printed notice in the Tucson newspaper; the notes in brackets are mine. COOK FUNERAL IS TO BE ON COAST Mrs. Josephine E[dith Wristen] Cook, 86, died late Wednesday [Jan. 19, 1944] at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Claude H. Webber, 1033 West Alameda street [Tucson, AZ]. She had lived with her daughter for 14 years prior to her death, which followed a long illness. Mrs. Cook was born in Illinois, moving to California by covered wagon in her youth. Before coming to Tucson she resided successively in [Santa Rosa, near] Sacramento and Fresno, Calif. In addition to her daughter Mrs. Cook leaves a son, Wristen M. Cook of Burlingame, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Luella Olufs of Fresno. Also surviving are several grandchildren and a great-grandchild [that's me!]. The body has been sent to Los Angeles, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. in the Rosedale Chapel, followed by burial in the Rosedale Cemetery. The Reilly Undertaking Company is in charge locally. [Josephine's husband, William Henry Cook, died March 31, 1931 in Los Angeles, and was buried in Rosedale Cemetery.] Carol De Priest <http://www.goodnet.com/~dpriest/>
Hope someone finds this of interest. She was my great-grand-aunt and a daughter of Seth Cook, Jr. of KY & MO. I found this newspaper clipping among some of my grandparents' things. Thanks to Charlie Cook for helping me make the connection. PAYNE SERVICES TO BE HELD SATURDAY Pioneer Citizen, 79, to Be Buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie [Cook] Payne, 79-year-old pioneer Bakersfield resident and active club worker who died at her home, 2311 Nineteenth Street, yesterday [Nov. 12, 1941], will be held Saturday at 11 a. m. Place of the services had not been announced today. Mrs. Payne, who had resided in Bakersfield since 1902, was born in Cook county, Ill., in 1862, coming to California in 1887. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late J. C. Payne, who died in 1938. Among fraternal and civic organizations in which Mrs. Payne was active are the Bakersfield Rebekah Lodge, Bakersfield Chapter No. 125, Order of Eastern Star; Infants' Friend League, Woman's Club, W. C. T. U., Lydia Circle of the Christian Church and the First Christian Church. She is survived by a son, J. Bruce Payne, Bakersfield; three grandchildren, James Bruce Payne, New York, Fred M. Payne, Bakersfield, and Mrs. Evelyn Payne Agee, Bakersfield, and several nieces in southern California. The Reverend B. B. Baird will officiate at the services, with Florence Bayless at the organ and Richard Skinner and Pauline Willis as soloists. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park beside her late husband. I'm trying to locate a company named Draper & Co. that would have been operating in the Los Angeles area in 1915. May have dealt in textiles. Lupe
Often, information like this can be found at the on-line telephone directories. I prefer www.555-1212.com because it allows to expand the search radius miles. In this case, I did not find Zeferino Ramirez Mortuary. This could be as a result of the consolidation of the industry which has been going on for several years. Many of the old family / independent mortuaries / funeral directors have been bought up by corporations. It is also possible that the business simply lies farther outside the area in some suburban city, but still spoken of generically as the "Los Angeles" area. It could also be that Z.R. was the name of the owner, and legally / officially the business has some other name. The source of the information, whatever it may be, or the age of the information, could be a clue to further searching. The place of the burial if known, or a church where services were held, or the place of death, may all be clues for further searching. The deceased place of residence, the place of death, mortuary, burial, are not always in close proximity. For example, when I am at the Riverside National Cemetery, I often see hearses from mortuaries 2 or 3 counties away. There is a Moslem cemetery in the high desert area of San Bernardino county which receives burials from all over southern California.
