    3. I don't know the library hours, or yours, but ... from the little league park, go south on the I-215. Take the off ramp for 5th or 6th (there's only one, but I forget) The ramp exits from the center (#1) lane of the freeway, so watch out for the people merging into the same # ! lane from the previous on ramp. Yes it's stupid to connect ramps to the fast lane, but the rail road told Cal-Trans to go take a flying ____ at a rolling donut, & you can see who prevailed. At the end of the ramp, you'll probably stop, I've never seen a green light there in 10 years. When clear, go straight ahead, & the Feldheim Library is on the right about 5 or 6 blocks down. They have free parking. The Calif History room is upstairs (elevator) but doesn't always have the same hours as the main library. 3. I'll be visiting the San Bernardino area this coming weekend, I'll be visiting Little League Western Region Headquarters. As my grandfather, Earl Wallace Rogers died in San Bernardino County in 1959. I was wondering if someone could tell me where I might be able to complete a fast search for any documented information on him. My guess is about the only place I'll be able to go is the public library, but I'm open for suggestions. I'll only be in the area Friday afternoon through Sunday, so my time for a through search is limited. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 3. Well folks I gotta 'fess up. Just because somebody said some while back that the early CADI existed ONLY on the original ledgers, & old poor microfilm, I had no justification to think that was all there was. & worse yet to repeat that assertion on the list as recently as yesterday. GOOD NEWS I contacted Mike Quinn at the state vital records ( you saw a msg from him forwarded yesterday) & asked ... Here's the deal .... When he took over the job, he found data on OLD data tapes. He was faced with a problem that has beset the Federal gov't & many states. Computer data on old tapes, so old, that either there is no hardware that will run them, or no software to read them. Did our hero quit ?? No !! He found a company that can read the old tapes, & the early CADI is being processed, then he will have to do a quality control process. It is unknown at this time how long this will take. But the early CADI is on the way. His answer did not address the CAMI, CABI, so I have asked if there are tapes of them, & I'll pass on whatever he says. It's a bit early on, but I think he deserves an 'attaboy to his boss or the legislature, or maybe everybody. Phil pvc@vancamp.org .

    1. Machado Ranch House
    2. From "Los Angeles: Epic of a City," by Lynn Bowman, 1974: "The bed of the stream now crosses under La Cienega Boulevard, and then for a mile and a half follows the same route as the San Diego Freeway going northwest. Perched on a bluff above the freeway, the Machado ranchhouse overloods the rushing stream of traffic where once the waters of Centinela Creek flowed quietly by." I believe this house would be on either the old Rancho Aguaje de la Centinela or Rancho La Ballona. In Inglewood? Perhaps in Centinela Park. Does anyone know if this ranch house still stands? Karla

    1. Spanish Soldier records
    2. Granville W Hough
    3. The question has been asked where death records may be found for Spanish soldiers. Mr.Raymond Woods collected all available information which could be identified for each Spanish soldier between 1769 and the end of Spanish rule about 1825; and he bequeathed that collection to the Research Department of the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027. The Research Department has assured me they will provide to any early California descendant the information it has for any three soldier ancestors the descendant claims. I encourage the use of this resource. I do not believe Mr. Woods continued his research into the Mexican Period, but I may be wrong on that. Certainly, after the Americans took over, the Mexican soldiers of the Presidios were disbanded and no records were kept by Americans that I have found. Some soldiers went back to Mexico, but most just stayed where they were in CA. The particular question about a person who disappeared from records in 1847 cannot likely be answered in military records. (Military records were among those collected by Bancroft who stored them in San Francisco, where most burned after the earthquake. Some records may now be in the Bancroft Library at Berkeley in boxes not yet indexed. That is why we have so much trouble.) Granville W. Hough.

    2. It was wonderful reading the information Mr. Hough provided. I will forward the info to others that are descendents of Mariano CorderoI agree that D. Mutnicks volumes are a valuable source. Through them I was able to easily find the mission records that she sited. As far as Manual Zuniga as a child of Matias Cordero and Ma. Ygnacia Zuniga, the bap. record states father unknown. The last documentation I have been able to find on Matias is an1847 bap record. I have been unable to find a death record for Matias. Does anyone have any suggestions for me. I have checked the mission records. If he died as a member of the military where do I find what records are available? Thank you

    1. Descendants of Matias Cordero
    2. Granville W Hough
    3. I am interested in this family because Matias Cordero was son of Antonio Mariano Cordero y Núñez and Juana Francisca Pinto y Ryelas. Antonio Mariano Cordero was a soldier in the San Francisco Presidio in 1782. As he served while Spain was at war with England - during the American Revolution, he is considered a valid patriot; and his living male descendants can join the Sons of the American Revolution. Any male descendant who is interested can contact me for application information. Children of Antonio Mariano Cordero and Juana Francisca Pinto were Josef Estanislao Espina; Pedro Regalado; Miguel Estanislao; Jose Domingo, Juan de Jesus, Maria Segunda, Jose Clemente, and Matias. As a widower, Antonio Mariano Cordero md (2) Maria Gertrudis Alvarez y Rodriquez, and their ch were Paulina Maria and Vicenta. So there is a vast community of Cordero descendants who can join the SAR if they are so inclined. Now, for specific descendants of the youngest son from the first marriage, Matias. The most authenic source for Cordero information for the early period is the work of Dorothy Mutnick in her five volumes, Some Alta California Pioneers and Descendants. Her work was copied directly from mission records. Matias Cordero y Pinto (bap, Santa Barbara, Feb 1808) on May 2, 1833 md Escolastica Ygnacio Zuñiga y German (bap, San Juan Bautista Feb 1812), and their children included: Jose Delores (died 1834); Romualdo de los Delores (bap Monterey Feb 7, 1836); Maria Griselda Delores (bap Monterey Aug 3, 1837); Jose Antonio (bap Monterey May 5, 1839); Maria Griselda (bap Apr 5, 1840); Jose del Refugio (bap Monterey Aug 5 1841); Maria del Refugio (died 1842); Maria Simona Narzisa (bap Oct25 1842); Maria de los Delores del Refugio (bap Jul 1844 at Monterey); and Manuel Antonio (bap Jan 24, 1852). The 1860 census for Monterey County seems to indicate that one of the two children named Maria Griselda was present in 1860, age 22. (This age could be an error by the census taker or the census giver, but it seems more probable that the first Maria Griselda died. The other 1860 anomaly is tha Manuel Antonio was apparently recorded as Manuel Zuñiga (with his mother's surname.) Beyond this, for this family, Dorothy Mutnick sayeth not. You can go beyond this information by referring to Vol II of Marie Northrop's "Spanish Mexican Families of Early California:1769-1850, pages 52 and 53. There you will find additional marriage and spousal information on all the brothers and sisters and half-sisters of Matias Cordero. Marie Northrop, in her two volumes, does not index any person named Francisco Lugo Cordero. This person should show on all available U. S. censuses if born in 1849 in CA and died after 1920. What does each census give, beginning in 1920, then working back to and including 1850? Within the Cordero family, as in most others, there were naturales (bastards) born here and there, but the parentage can sometimes be determined by the families with whom the naturale lived. Then again the name Francisco Lugo Cordero does not ring true. Perhaps it was Francisco Lugo y Cordero, and he took his mother's name. This happened often enough for one to be cautious about any use of a double Spanish surname without the dash or the y. (Of course, families did name children for some role model, and Francisco Lugo may have been such a model.) That is what I can offer. With my regards, Granville W. Hough.
