    1. 1920 Enumeration Districts
    2. How many of you have been searching the 1920 census available through Ancestry.com? I've spent hours and hours trying to find my families. So far, no luck. I've begun making lists of the streets noted on each page. I didn't list the addresses, but will do that in the future. I'm trying to get to Allesandro Street at Riverside, Blake and Crystal intersections. (North of Elysian Park on the river.) ED 145 featured Allesandro and intersecting streets, but didn't go as far as the block I needed. I'm sure I'll be doing this for the next few days. If you're searching for a street, but haven't found it, e-mail me and I'll be on the look-out for it. In the meantime, if you run across a district that contains Allesandro, Riverside, Crystal or Blake I'd certainly appreciate any help. Karla

    1. Woods Collection/Spanish soldiers
    2. At the suggestion of Mr. Hough I contacted the Autry Museum of Western Heritage (www.autry-museum.org) requesting information about Cordero ancestors. They were very prompt with their reply. The Raymond Wood Collection consists of the research notes compiled by Dr. Raymond Wood from his study of Spanish soldiers in CA. The collection consists of about1000 index cards arranged alphabetically by name. Dr. Wood noted on the cards where he found a reference to the named person, and sometimes included additional biographical information. There are some other documents also. The Research Center will do a search of the collection for a limit of 3 names. They will photocopy what they find. There is no fee for this search. Jeannie Cordero

    1. Bill Marshall and Juan Verdugo
    2. This doesn't seem like what we saw on TV or in the movies. San Diego Herald December 18, 1851 The Hanging of Bill Marshall and Juan Verdugo The trial of these men was concluded on Friday evening inst, and on Saturday morning, it was annouced on the Plaza that they would be executed at 3 o'clock the same day. The Fitzgerald Volunteer word ordered to be on duty a thtat time to conduct the prisoners to the scaffold, which had been erected a short distance out of town, near the Catholic burying ground. The graves were dug and all the preparations made, during the forenoon, for carryong out the sentence of the Court Martial. At about two o'clock, the Volunteers were under arms and the people began to gather in considerable numbers about the Plaza and Court H-----. A Priest was with the prisoners most of the forenoon, and accompanied them to the galloway, where they received final absolution. They wept when informed that a short time would be allowed them, if they wished to may any remarks. Marshall was the first to speak. He said that he was prepared to die and he hoped that his friends and the people around him would forgive him, that he trusted in God's mercy and hoped to be pardoned for his many transgressions. He still insisted that he was innocent of the crime for which he was about to die. This was about the substance of his remarks, as near as we could learn from those who stood near the scaffold. Verdugo spoke in Spanish. He ackowledged his guild and admitted the justices of the sentence placed upon him; said he was ready and willing to yield up his life as a forgeit for his crimes and wickedness. The ropes were then adjusted -- the priest approached them for the last time -- said some consoling words to them -- repeated a final prayer -- extended the crucifix, which each kissed ------ times, when he descended from the wagon which immediately moved out, leaving the poor unfortunate wrteches suspended about five feet from the ground. The fall could not have been more than a foot, at the most, for their necks were not dislocated. Marshall struggled considerably, but the Sonorian scarcely moved a muscle. Both of them were in their shir sleeves, and neither of them hood-winked. Marshall was quite a small sized man, with regular and rather agreeable features, and a head indicating, phre---- greatly, great determination. The other was much stouter, with a frame apparently of great power. He was a shade darker than the average of Californian, and had a most brutish countenance. Theri arms were pinioned behind. They vibrated slightly when the cart was driven from under them, but after that not a convulsive movement could be seen, although the physician said that they were not deat for some three quarters of an hour later. Every thins was conducted with the utmost order and quietness. There was no halting or hesitation on the part of those whose painful dity it was to take the law into their own hands for the protection of the lives and property of the whole community. The minds of the large assemblage and especially of the friendly Indians, seemed to be impressed with booming awe. It was an awful and melancholy night to see those bodies swinging about there in the wind, now exhibiting ther countenances direcly fronting you, and again averting them -- with the crows and --------- hovering overhead, as if ready to pounce down upon and devour their meal of sudden death, and one which, we trust in Got, we may never be called upon to witness again. After being suspended about an hour and a half, the bodies were cut down and interred in the Catholic burying ground.

    1. California Governors (pre-statehood)
    2. I ran into this interesting article on the governors of California prior to Statehood. Thought it was interesting. San Diego Herald March 19, 1853 CALIFORNIA GOVERNORS -- We give, below the names of the Governors of California. The first Spanish Governor in Upper California was Gasparde Pertola, who was sent to the territory in 1759. In 1773, he was succeeded by Felipe de Neve. Pedro Fagus assumed command in 1782, and he was relieved in 1792 by Josef Romen. In 1795, Diego Borica was invested with charge of affairs. Jose Joaquin Arrellega became Governor in 1806, and to him succeeded in 1812, Jose Maria Arguello. In 1815 commenced the term of Pablo Vincente Sola, during whose administration the Province of Mexico declared its independence of Spain. It was not till 1822, that Sola acknowledged the change of affairs, when he took the title of Political Chief and Military Commandant, and remained in office till 1823, leaving as Political Chief, Luis Antonio Arguello. He acted till 1825, when Joe Marin Echeandia arrived from Mexico as Political Chief. Echeandia was superseded in 1829 by Don Manuel Victoria, who was expelled from the country in 1830. Things were very unsettled till 1833, when Genl. Don Jose Figueroa arrived, and died in 1835, having previously resigned the government to Don Jose Castro who afterwards resigned in favor of Col. Nicolas Butierrez, who held it till the arrival of Don Mariano Chico, who was expelled by the people of Monterey in 1836. After this California was declared independent and Don Mariano Guadalupe Ballejo was called on to assume the government of the state. He however hesitated and Don Juan Bautista Alvarado took the place of Governor. General Manuel Micheltorena arrived in 1842 and kept command till expelled in 1841. The office of Governor being thus vacated, Pio Pico under took the functions of chief civil authority, while Joe Castro possessed the office of Caommandant General. They remained in power till the occupation of California by the United States. I thought this was fascinating as we always seem to know who was Governor of California since statehood, but prior seems to be something that we have mostly forgotten. Donna Bradley

    1. OLD obit and marriage notices
    2. Hi all; I was cruising some of the OLD newspapers back in the 1850's (shortly after California became a state) and found some old marriage and death notices that I though I would post. Seems that alot of the posts in the "San Diego Herald" were relating to San Francisco so I am sending this to the Norcal list as well as it could help someone there as well. Here are some of what I found. These are all from the San Diego Herald (1st newspaper in San Diego County). June 5, 1851 DIED - at the Playa, San Diego, on Sunday, June 1st, of chronic diarrhea, William Valesch, aged -- years. The above named was from Baltimore and was a member of the William Tell Lodge, No. 4, I.O.O.F., of that city. He was landed from the steamship Antelope at this place on Sunday last, on her trip from Panama to San Francisco. July 10, 1851 DIED - July 7th, after an illness of a few weeks, at Tijuan, the residence of her grand-father, Don Santiago Arguello, Maria Josepa Zamorano - daughter of the late Capt. Zamorano, of the Mexican Army -- aged 17 years. This young and delicate flower, the beloved and esteemed by all, drooped and withered; and the spirit had now been recalled by that Being, who "gave and has the right to take away." It is hard to realize the fact, that one so young, so lovely, and so endeared to all her friends, by her mild and affectionate disposition, her purity, her truth, her meekness and gentleness -- Indeed by all the finer traits that adorn the female character -- should this be irrevocably taken from the midst of her loving relations and friends; and that never more on this earth, will her kind words be heard, or her sweet smile be seen -- but even now, consolation can be found in the conviction, that her angelic spirit has winged its way to a world of brighter skies. "T" August 28, 1851 DIED - at New San Diego, on Wednesday evening, the 27th, instant, of Erysipelas, Thomas L. Pickering, formerly of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, aged 36 years. October 2, 1851 DIED - at the Playa, on Monday, the 30th Sept., after a lingering illness of 10 weeks, Henry Lindsey, aged 38 years. October 16, 1851 DIED - On board Steamship California, at sea, on the 27th ult., 1851, John DeCamp, son of Jas. C. and Ellen DeCamp, late of St. Louis, Mo., aged 9 years and thirty days. On board steamship California, a child of Rev. Thomas H. Pearne, Missionary of the Methodist church, for Oregon, aged 10 months. Also, on the steamer, Mrs. Mary Flannagan, of Panama Fever. Mrs. F. was on her way to join her husband at San Francisco. September 24, 1853 MARRIED - In New York, a month or two since, Thomas Whaley of San Diego to Miss Lanning. We learn this indirectly, and are unable to give the particulars, but there appears to be no doubt that Tom did it. DIED - On Monday the 19th of September, at San Diego, after a lingering illness of one year, Don Juan Maria Maron, in the 46th year of his age. He leaves an inconsolable widow, and an interesting family of children to mourn his loss. October 7, 1853 DIED - In this city, on 3d inst, Joaquin Lopez, an idiot, aged 21 years. November 19, 1853 MARRIED - At San Antonio, Alameda County, Oct. 10, by Rev. M. Agurio, Wm. P. Toles to Maria Astonia, youngest daughter of Don Ignacio Peraine. DIED - In San Francisco, on Monday evening, Nov. 7, James C. Hackett, in the 34th year of his age. December 3, 1953 DIED - In San Diego, Nov. 29 of apoplexy, Frederic Painter, MD, formerly of New York, aged 33 years. January 28, 1854 MARRIED - In Trinity Church, San Francisco, January 14th, by the Rev. Dr. Clark, Lieut. George H. Derby, U. S. Corps of Topographical Engineers, to Mary A. Coons, of St. Louis, Mo.. Immediately after the ceremony, the bridal party repaired on board the steamer Southerner, and after partaking of a magnificanet 'dejuner a la fourchette', given in honor of the occurrence, by J. Nugent, Esq., and other friends of the party, sailed at 4 p.m. for San Diego. DIED - On board of the Golden Gate, lying in the harbor at San Diego, Mr. Isaac M. Gibson, aged about 40 years, a passenger of the Golden Gate from the Atlantic States, Mr. Givson was born in Philadelphia, and had resided in New Orleans for eleven years previous to his coming to California in 1849. He will be much regretted by his numerous friends and acquaintances. In San Diego, on the evening of January 24th (inst.) Mr. Wm. Gheen, of Chester county, Pa., aged about 54 years. February 4, 1854 MARRIED - On Sunday, January 29th, at the Mission of San Diego, by Rev. J. Reynolds, Chaplain of the Post, William French 1st Sargeant of company I. First Artillery, to Miss Virginia Anne Cogan, sister -in-law to R. Kerren. Sargeant Major.
