Hi Listers, I guess the spector of the computer monitor falling on me---it didn't---got me 'all shook up'---I had just seen the reports of the quake in El Salvador and heard the reports of the two large quakes off the CA coast this morning...and we are approaching the 7th anniversary of the Northridge Quake Monday. This may be a good time for all of us in 'quake country' to take stock of our physical safety and emergency supplies. Are large pieces of furniture and televisions strapped down? Can you find a flashlight in the dark? Are your emergency food and water supplies restocked? I'm going to have a beer... All these are from The San Diego Herald April 28, 1855 DIED In this city on Wednesday, 25th inst., of cancer on the stomach, Mr. Gustave Fischer, aged 49 years. June 16, 1855 BIRTH On the 5th inst., the lady of J. R. Lassator Esq., of Vallecity, San Diego Co., a son DIED On the 9th inst., at the Laguna, San Diego Co., Lizzy, only child of C. G. and Margery Saunders, aged 10 years and 2 1/2 months, after a short attack of intermittent fever. We deeply sympathize with the bereaved parents and cannot better express ourselves than in the lines of the immortal Byron: Within the narrow cell reclines her clay. That clay, where once such animation beam'd; The Kinf of Terrors seized her as his prey; Nor worth, nor beauty, have her life redeem'd. Oh! could that King of Terrors pity feel, Or heaven reverse the dread decrees of fate; Not here the mourner would his grief reveal, Not here the muse her virtues would relate. But wherefore weep? Her matchless spirit soars Beyond where splendid shines the orb of day; And weeping angels lead her to those bowers Where endless pleasures virtue's deeds repay. June 22, 1855 BIRTH In this city, Saturday morning, 16th inst., the lady of George F. Tebbetts, of a daughter. Phelan, 3d Artillery, U.S.A. to Miss Mary Gallogly, both of Mission San Diego. BIRTHS The lady of Richard Kerren, Esq., at the Mission San Diego, of a daughter, on the 31st ultimo. The lady of Col. August 22, 1856 BIRTH In this city, on the 19th inst., the wife of Thomas Whaley, Esq., of a son. October 18, 1856 NARRUED At San Ysabel, on Sunday the 12th of October, by C. G. Saunders, Esq., Mr. John Sawell to Miss Temperance Barker, both late of Texas. November 8, 1856 DIED On Wednesday night, 5th inst., Ordinance Sgt. Richard Kerren, aged 41 years. November 29, 1856 DIED In this city, Sunday morning, Nov. 23, Lydia A. Morse, wife of E. W. Morse, Esq., aged 28 years Dust to dust, earth to earth and ashes to ashes, and as the voice of the speaker died away, and the hard clods of earth settled upon the coffin, we turned away, with a sense of dreariness, from the grave of all that was mortal of her who is the subject of this passing tribute. What that saw her a few weeks since, joyful in health and indulging in fond anticipations of the future, sould for a moment have indulged the thought that death was nigh? Yet was he preparing that fatal shaft which has inflicted so deep a wound. Far away from the golden shores of the Pacific, in a quiet village of the dear New England, she loved so well, shall father, mother, brother and sister receive the sad news, and as the falling tear blots the page, their frief shall speed across the ocean wast, and mingling with that of him so sadly bereaved, ascend on hight to be received and recorded as a just tribute to departed worth. We knew her well, and knew her but to love her and admire her as the loving wife, the fond mother, and the steadfast friend; charming with her simplicity and grace, and winning tribute from all. Noble was the heart now so still, not had place there within, aught have love and kindness for the whole world. With heart as open as the day of melting charity, she was ever ready to dispense of her abundance to those in affliction and to console with that gentle sympathy so grateful in the recipient. Then let us not mourn for her who has returned to her native sphere and who now watches over him she loved so well, but let us rejoice that she is removed from all care and trouble, that her probation is over, and that she now reaps her rich reward. But to him who is left to mourn, we tender our hear-felt sympathy, trusting that time, although it may not heal the wound, may vetassuage his grief, and that while completing this dreary pilgrimage here below, he may look forward with hope to that day of re-union, when spirit shall meet spirit and the family circle again be complete, but purified and refined and purged from earthy matter, and endowed with those celestial attributes which shall enable them to come for evermore, without fear, of the great avenger -- death. There is a calm for those that weep, A rest for weary pilgrims found, And while the mouldering ashes sleep Low in the groung -- The sould of origin divine, God's glorious image freed from clay, In heaven's eternal sphere shall shine Another of day. The sun is but a spark of fire, A transient orbiter in the sky; The howl, immortal in its sire Shall never die.
