Jean; Thank you, for sharing this experience, How startling to hear someone say that. I myself hate to ask for look ups, but love to help others in any way that I can. there are the occasional persons that sign up to do look ups and then you never here back, whether the info falls between the cracks or the person is put out having to do one more look up. We will in some cases never know. I hope those being asked, realize that many of us volunteer out services in other areas as well as ask for help when we really need it. I am looking for someone to do some lookups for me at the LA County courthouse -- two marriages and a probate record. I have the exact date of death for the probate, but the marriages will require some searching. I need someone who will take the time to be THOROUGH in the marriage search as I feel they are there. I will certainly reinburse for copying and mailing. I have access to the SW branch of the National Archives and to the Dallas Public Library. I would be willing to exchange my time and work effort for anyone willing to help me in LA. Please respond to me off-list. Thanks. Jackie, in Texas jp55@wt.net
Jean - There is a list for the taking of cemetery photos. They charge only for film, developing and postage, nothing more. For volunteers, go here: CEMETERY-PHOTOS-L-request@rootsweb.com ====================================== Then went to the list and asked if someone could take a photo, that I had all the info, and I would pay expenses. I got an email back from a list member that said, "Do it yourself". Now since this is down in Texas, and I am in Colorado.... Gary Radcliffe glradcliffe@aol.com
Hi, List. My prior query regarding subject shall now be considered complete. In another venue I will search for the possible Sexton of the cemetery, which is all I asked for originally. For all the courteous replies, thanks. E.D.

You might have to find out which library is close to there, and request a city directory look up from them. To find out which neighborhood that would be, go to yahoo.com, maps, put in the address, and it will bring up a star of that address. Then there should be a list of businesses. For the yellow pages, you would do Los Angeles for the location, Public Libraries. Also, I noticed there were acouple of people on Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness who do public records lookups: http://raogk.rootsweb.com/californ.htm You might try that. But, I would do the libraries first, even if you have to make acouple of calls. Do you have a death date, birth date for your person? If you have both of those you can send for a death certificate. Hope this helps Jean Hehn
Hello list, I had been searching my Mother's brother for long time now. Finally found out his actual birthdate and calculated from the events she could tell me, his death. I tried getting a DC for the county, to no avail, so sent for it through the state. Got the DC yesterday. I then called the cemetery and got all the info, plot, space etc. Then went to the list and asked if someone could take a photo, that I had all the info, and I would pay expenses. I got an email back from a list member that said, "Do it yourself". Now since this is down in Texas, and I am in Colorado.... After unsubbing from that list. I went to the site "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness". I only use them, when its my last hope. Yes, found someone in that county, and she is going to get photo for me. I will probably do this for my Southern California photos I need too. BTW...this guy who was so rude to me...it ends up that he was stuck there (he was there at least 3 yrs. that I know of) and didn't know how to get off....so I told him how to get off. Unsub that is. Hello, Somone suggested that I look in the CADI, but my problem is I don't have a first name. I have found many Ws all over the place, including the CADI, the Social Security Index and other places, but I can't make any meaningful connection without that vital first name. Any more ideas? Thank you. --Mary Beth in Alaska ----- Original Message ----- From: Sid Michaels <mbsid@mtaonline.net> To: <SOCAL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 06, 2001 8:29 AM Subject: LA City Directory/QUANDT > Hi, > I am new to this list. Hi, I am new to this list. I wonder if there is anyone who has time to do a lookup in an LA city directory for me? The name is W. Quandt, and the address is 1610 E. 51st St., LA. The time would be the end of World War I, I think around 1919 or so. This is the only lead on the stubborn dead end of my great-grandmother's family. I am hopeful of a breakthrough. Thank you all very much. --Mary Beth in Alaska
Phil, Thanks for the link. It seems that most people don't know how to search anything for themselves. I privately E-mailed her that if she typed the words "downey california cemetery" in any search engine, she'd get an answer. As I said www.555-1212.com has found everything so far ... Pierce Brothers Praiswater 818-340-2301 7245 Remmet Ave Canoga Park, CA The name change indicates that like many of the old independent, family owned ones, it has been sold to a major corporation. In such cases, the success of a request seems to depend on the disposition of the individual you contact. I advise your first question (if you call) might be "are you busy at the moment? Would it be better if I call back later?"
