Hi Mary Beth, Death Valley is one of my favorite places. There's some info on the internet at: <http://www.nps.gov/deva/FrameSet_culture.html> <http://www.cr.nps.gov/history.htm> - which links to: <http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/askhist.htm>, where you can ask a question of an historian (I'd suggest someone in Western History). By the way, there are historians answering questions on all different things, like the Civil War. So it could be of help to many others out there. There are books on Death Valley history, mainly mining; check your library or used book store. If you have info on what your great-grandfather did when he was in the area, that could narrow your search: there were different kinds of mining. Good luck in your search, Carol At 07:15 PM 2/15/01 -0900, Sid Michaels wrote: > > > Hello everyone. > > My great-grandfather, Henry Harder arrived in California in 1856. Hello everyone. My great-grandfather, Henry Harder arrived in California in 1856. He was settled in San Jose in 1871. Between 1856 and 1871 we are not sure where he was, but a family member told my father once that Henry had worked in Death Valley during those years. Is there anyone who has any ideas where to look to possibly confirm this information? Thanks. Mary Beth
Well, I got all excited when a couple of fellow list members suggested the school and home for girls might be the very famous one on north labrea, but alas it doesn't appear to be so. I am looking at the 1920 census for LA, precinct 740 at the household located at 5248 Meridian. At the top of the census page is noted "Hylwood (or Hylward) School and Home for Girls". I interpreted this as Hollywood but apparently not. My cousin John B. POUND and his wife Dora lived there as did 10 children ranging in age from 4-17 and were from states all over the nation. Dora is listed as headmistress and teacher of the private school. The LA library didn't seem to know anything about it as I just spoke with the History dept of the central library. Would anyone else have a clue as to where I could find out about this "school"? Thanks Jackie

Is there someone in the Fresno area that could do a search of the Belmont Cemetery in Fresno for me? This is my wife's Aunt and the closest we can figure is that she passed away in the latter part of 1928. Her name is Grace Packard. Thank You. Paul Liebenthal
Jackie <jp55@wt.net> asked: > Could anyone tell me about the Hollywood School and > Home for Girls on Meridian Street? My cousin and his > wife headed the school per the 1920 census. > > Thanks. > Jackie This candidate for your school has almost the right name, but the wrong address. But, due to the nature of its students, it is I think worth noting: "Another fine private school was the Hollywood School for Girls, located at 1749 North La Brea Avenue. Founded in 1909, the school achieved a high academic standing in its college preparatory work, registering as many as 225 pupils. Among its many illustrious students were Misses Agnes DeMille, Katherine DeMille, Jean Harlow, Dorothy Sills, Catherine Toberman, and Mrs. David Selznic." [Source: "Hollywood: The First Hundred Years," by Bruce T. Torrence, New York Zoetrope (publishers), 1982, p. 52.] Now, if it was *MY* cousin who had the opportunity to give Jean Harlow a spanking at school or anywhere else, this would be something I would *RESEARCH*!!! Problem is, my map shows Meridian Street as being in Highland Park, across town, not really all that close to Hollywood or to La Brea Avenue in Hollywood. The school could have moved some time between 1909 and 1920, of course (from Highland Park to Hollywood or vice versa). Perhaps the biographies of the DeMilles, etc. might have a clue. Just thought Id mention. Lester Powers lesterps@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Hi List, Wanted to mention that the Jamboree seems a little early this year. Think it was late April or May last year. It will be held at the Pasadena Center, 300 E Green St, Pasadena, CA 91101. I have been to 2 of them, and found them quite useful. There will be 5 time slots for speakers each day and 2 speakers at any one time. If you go both days you may be able to cover most of them. One day should be $10 or 2 days for $15 with parking for $7 ($14 for 2 days) In addition to the speakers the main hall has lot's of books, software, CD-ROMs, charts and more than enough other stuff to break you. I bought a fiche reader last year, and could barely afford to order some film for it :-) There are tables for those doing research in different ethnic or geographic areas: Black, Hispanic, Irish, German, Japanese, Alabama, Michigan etc. Then you can get help on things like adoptions as well. There is food available in the building, but unless you are big on hot dogs my suggestion is to get out of there and go up to Colorado (1 block). The event is sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society and Family Research Library and their Web site is http://www.scgsgenealogy.com It looks like scqs but is scgs in the URL. I know that many members of the list are out of state, but for those in the area I think you would enjoy this event. It might even be a good excuse to come here for others. Will try to post the subjects the speakers have chosen for this year at a later time. bill.widrig@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
