While we are on the subject of the census... Aren't they confidential for 70 years? Does that mean we can now see the 1930 census? There are only a few (very few) sporadic towns available at the State Archives according to "State Census Records" by Ann S. Lainhart. Some of these are on microfilm and available through the Family History Center. Does anyone have access to the Calif. State census between the years 1885-1915? Thank you for any help. Toni
Dear listers, Well, the winds have died down and we came through pretty well. A few fence sections will need to be replaced, as will a few shingles from the roof. A little yard cleanup to remove tree branches and other debris. Had to get the patio furniture out of the pool with other odds and ends that blew in. One car died from all the dust. I'll be back to doing my lookups as soon as the car is running again........... Sharon Kern Co. Volunteer

Louise, I forgot you were in La Jolla. Let me tell you about a photograph I 'found' in La Mesa. It was taken before 1902 (as you will see). A nice little house, surrounded by rose bushes and with a picket fence in front. Standing in the yard are the occupants of the home. Handwritten on the back of the picture: "First house of the Fields - was moved to side lot (west) when new house was built in 1902 (1859 Julian St). "L to R - George Field, Carl, Clyde, Myrtle, Josephine Field holding Hollis & pregnant with Paul. "House in photo was being shipped to La Jolla on the train but it fell off during the train ride." Have you run across anything about a house falling off a train? Seems it would have made quite a - well, quite a story. (I hope to visit 1859 Julian St on my next trip to SD, just haven't had the time, yet.) Karla in Bakersfield

Kristie, I've had success finding the Polk Directories at the public libraries. The Reference Librarians have always been helpful doing lookups. Jeannie
I have a funny feeling that what you will get is the site for Polk county, Georgia. Roberta

Kristie, I have seen some Polk's Directories. The ones I saw were city directories which are available in libraries, especially libraries with genealogy or history sections. Large cities have main or central libraries. These usually have local city directories. --Mary Beth ----- Original Message ----- From: Kristie <missguinness@yahoo.com> To: <SOCAL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 05, 2001 4:53 AM Subject: Santa Monica Polk Directory > Does anyone know how to locate a Polk Directory. Does anyone know how to locate a Polk Directory. This is the equivalent of our White Pages phone book today. I am assisting a close friend of mine who was adopted in the Los Angeles area in 1964. He has gone to the hospital where he was born, St. Joseph's in Santa Monica, but the only clue that they would give him was to find a Polk Directory. Any information that anyone could assist us with we would be deeply greatful. Regards, Kristie Mulligan ===== This above all: to thine own self be true. -William Shakespeare __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dear listers, I just want to let everyone know that if you are expecting lookups from me here in Kern Co., it will be somewhat delayed. We are experiencing the worst windstorm here in several years (maybe even decades). It's been blowing very hard since about 5 a.m. Sunday morning and it is expected to contnue throughout tomorrow. The electrical lines are down in numerous places, and the visibility is nearly zero in many places. There have been several auto accidents. The winds are currently up to 70 mph and the police and Highway Patrol are asking people to stay off the streets if they can. So, I will not be traipsing downtown until things are quieted down and cleaned up. Sharon Kern Co. Volunteer

I will be eternally grateful for those kind people who have done research for me and helped me piece my family together. I have a long way to go, but thanks to the Rootsweb lists, I have found some relatives that I was estranged from as a baby. I'm 60 yrs. old, disabled, and live in NM so I couldn't possibly do the research myself. Many thanks, lj
