    1. Re: [CASANDIE] Escondido / San Marcos Cemeteries
    2. Laura; I checked the death records for San Diego County and could not find anything on her so she must have died before 1905, if she did die in San Diego County. I checked the death records before that as well, but did not find anything, but since they were not required to register deaths before 1905, that does not necessarily mean that she did not die in San Diego before 1905. You said that she may have died in July 1901. I checked the papers for that month for a death record, but found nothing there as well. Don't know what else I can do. Sorry Donna At 09:25 AM 3/8/01 -0800, Laura Pieper wrote: >Good Morning All, > >I am searching for the burial location of my great-great-grandmother: Emily Amanda Argo Carman Sapp. She was born in 1844 and died approximately July of 1910. 1. news story/obit April 1926 LA/Long Beach area
    2. Junel
    3. Hello, I'm on the northern California list but I need some help in southern California with a big mystery. I found some interesting news articles in a Long Beach paper Dec. 1929 but ran out of time before I could research back to the original incident which occurred in April 1926 (closest date I could find). Would anyone be able to find a news story or obituary for a death in the LA or Long Beach area? I think both area papers probably covered the story since it was a gangland slaying. The murder victim was Eddie 'Blondy' Hannan [or Hammond]. Two different issues of a Long Beach paper in Dec. 1929 referred back to the incident as having occurred at a 'local boarding house'. One gave the name as HANNAN, the other as HAMMOND. I'm looking for the names and possibly pictures of people involved in the incident. I think it should mention that there were at least two men and one woman. Someone with a close family relationship maybe? Appreciate any help or suggestions. I'm glad to pay for copies and mailing if you find something!- Junel

This is a Multilingual Translation Guide that I have seen at the LDS Bookstores, was copyrighted in 1994 and now is in its 5th printing. It contains actual copies of birth & baptismal certificates, passports, death certificates, ships lists, marriage certificates and other documents from all over the world; giving the various alphabets as well as word-lists. Really a worthwhile book, and I highly recommend it! The following is the list from the Table of Contents: German Swedish French Italian Latin Portuguese Romanian Spanish Czech Polish Russian Hungarian Lithuanina There is also a bibliography as well as a list of Genealogical Organizations.

    1. N P You Can Have Progress
    2. >From "Nuestro Pueblo - Los Angeles, City of Romance" Copyright 1940, by Charles H. Owens and Joseph F. Seewerker YOU CAN HAVE PROGRESS! A. L. Nies came into Los Angeles in 1882 and established his blacksmith shop near the present Hotel Broadway. He liked the friendly little town where passersby called each other by name and spoke of personal affairs to man, woman, and child. For sixteen years he was content. Then the devil of Progress began to alter landmarks and inundate the streets with 'foreigners.' Mr. Nies made his decision. He could do nothing about the Progress so much remarked, but he could do something about his own life. He moved out to a muddy crossroads and set up his shop. Progress was far away. Ranchers from near-by Eagle Rock and Pasadena brought strings of horses to be shod, buggies and wagons to be repaired. Mr. Nies pounded the red iron with the ancient clanging that Vulcan knew, and Weland. 'But I hadn't been out here ten years,' he says sourly, 'before they were calling the road a street and paving it! Then somebody opened a grocery store. Somebody else started something else. Now, the shop has a street number! 6104 North Figueroa. Look at the cars whizzing by! Look at all the bustling. This is Highland park, now!' But he has the forge with which he started as blacksmith. His shop is pretty much as it was in 1898. It seems a safe forecast that however the town may change, Mr. Nies will remain the village blacksmith, saying nothing good of Progress.

    1. N P A Blacksmith Who Scorns Horses
    2. >From "Nuestro Pueblo - Los Angeles, City of Romance" Copyright 1940, by Charles H. Owens and Joseph F. Seewerker A BLACKSMITH WHO SCORNS HORSES John Pitts, blacksmith, looks up disdainfully from his forge if the visitor mentions horses. 'Haven't got time for horses!' he says curtly. 'They went out when cars came in. One time, quite a while ago, a peddler brought his horse in. I didn't want to shoe the horse, and when I saw that the horse didn't want me to shoe him I told that peddler to take him somewhere else. Hasn't been a horse in here since!' Pitts's shop, at 413 Garey Street, is called the Blacksmithing Service Company. From its wide door the white, imposing tower of City Hall shows above lower buildings, monument of the modern present. But from the forge rises the ancient odor of hot iron. 'Boys from small towns never do forget that smell,' says Pitts. 'They start sniffing a few blocks away, begin to twist and turn, then finally come sticking their noses in at the door.' Pitts is happy at his work of shaping iron. He sharpens tools and forges jobs for near-by shops, finding variety enough to make life interesting for a master mechanic. He has been a blacksmith for years and is proud of it. But he has no time for horses!

    1. N P The Little Japanese Drugstore
    2. >From "Nuestro Pueblo - Los Angeles, City of Romance" Copyright 1940, by Charles H. Owens and Joseph F. Seewerker THE LITTLE JAPANESE DRUGSTORE Sandwiched between two taller, wider buildings at 314 East First Street is the smallest drugstore in Los Angeles. The Nippon Pharmacy owns another distinction: Shiro Nakamura, owner, staff, is the first Japanese to be licensed as pharmacist in California. Is this the smallest drugstore in the United States? In California? 'That I cannot say,' Mr. Nakamura answers. 'It is ten feet wide and sixty feet deep. I have operated the store since 1910. I graduated from the University of Southern California, the first Japanese pharmacist to receive a license.' Business is not so good as it was twenty years ago, he admits pleasantly. But it is his life, which is rounded by wife and dog but - unfortunately - no children. Which are the most agreeable as customers, Americans, Japanese, Chinese? 'I have lived in Los Angeles since 1901. It is a pleasant place to live. My store stands on what was an alley of the older city. There was a bakery next door. The ovens were in the back yard. Then the alley was closed and the property-owner built my little store.' Will Americans and Japanese ever become really friendly? 'A store ten feet wide IS a small store.'
