    3. John No Rutherford Hayes, had been here in 1880 http://www.ohiohistory.org/onlinedoc/hayes/Volume04/Chapter43/December11.txt For one of the places he visited was Oakland, and the Cameron Stanford House, where they served Lemonade, for his wife ;-) George John Maylone <[email protected]> wrote: McKinley may indeed have been the first sitting president to visit California, since Ulysses S. Grant was "only" a former president when he arrived in San Francisco in 1879. After completing his presidency, Ulysses S Grant and his wife Julia took a world tour, which included a trip to Japan. They returned to the US through California, arriving in San Francisco and subsequently visiting Yosemite. You can read about it at: http://www.nps.gov/ulsg/AroundWorld2.html If you are anything at all in the way of a student of history, Grant is a fascinating study. Here is a collection of quotes by and about him: http://www.presidentlincoln.com/Quote6.html And another most informative web site: http://www.mscomm.com/~ulysses/ Grant's personal memoirs are considered one of the great written works in the English Language. One of the better introductions you can get to Grant, however, is Ken Burns' PBS epic, "The Civil War". That clearly frames the times and perspective from which Grant wrote his personal memoirs. General George S Patton believed himself to be an "eternal soldier" of sorts, the reincarnation of a soul whose destiny was to be born into life after life as a warrior, and whose essence had led the Carthaginians against the legions of Rome, and later fought for the armies of Rome in Europe. Ulysses Grant made no such claim, but you get the same sense of destiny about Grant and about his peers such as William Tecumseh Sherman, both of whom would likely be just another limb in someone's family tree if it were not for the extraordinary circumstances that were thrust upon them by the times in which they lived. At the time the civil war broke out in 1861, Grant, a graduate of West Point, had resigned from the military and failed as a farmer, as a realtor, found himself unable to gain employment as an engineer and was working as a clerk in his father's leather goods store. Less than 3 years later, Abraham Lincoln appointed him to be commander of the Union armies, and less than 6 years after that, he became the 18th president of the United States. 3. Thank you to Barbara Smith, George Rushton, Roland Elliott, and John Maylone for your very helpful responses to me query regarding former President Grant's possible visit to Los Angeles. After viewing the website suggested by John it appears that though Grant finished his world (May 1877 to Sept 1879) he never stopped in Los Angeles. Thanks again, Gregory McReynolds Pasadena, California

    2. George Rushton
    3. Gregory I do not know about L.A., but he did visit San Francisco, for he took "Around the World Tour" from May, 1877-September, 1879, The Grant's make an around the world tour, and he is besieged by crowds throughout the journey. There is no itinerary and Grant enjoys himself hugely. He said, 'I feel like a boy out of school." Jesse accompanies his parents for some of the trip, and his place is then taken by Fred. Grant routinely plows through 15 course dinners, but actually loses weight on the trip - he returns to San Francisco weighing 159 pounds. His favorite countries on the trip were Japan and Switzerland http://www.mscomm.com/~ulysses/page2.html So maybe he did visit L.A,, at least now you have a time period. 1. RE: Orange Co. Obits
    2. Paula Hinkel
    3. Michael, I suggest you obtain death certificates to find out where in Orange County they died. I found a few newspapers that were published those years, but you need to know where your relatives lived in order to know where to look. You can find a link to the Orange County Vital Records office from this page of the SoCal Obituaries website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~socalobituaries/deathinfo.html The California State Library - California Section holds four newspapers that cover the years that you're searching. The California State Library does interlibrary loan, and you can get more information from their website at: http://www.library.ca.gov/ Name of Publication City/Town Month/Year Month/Year Start of Holding End of Holding Anaheim Gazette Anaheim 03 1905 11 1964 Santa Ana Daily Register Santa Ana 11 1906 03 1911 Fullerton News Fullerton 01 1907 12 1916 Evening Blade Santa Ana 01 1911 03 1918 Santa Ana Daily Evening Register Santa Ana 04 1911 03 1939 The Fullerton Public Library has microfilm and an index for Fullerton News Tribune Fullerton 04 1893 Curr Curr Fullerton News Tribune Index Fullerton 1893 1984 Contact information for Fullerton Public Library can be found at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~socalobituaries/147.html There probably are other sources for newspapers during this time but these are the only repositories that we have inventoried so far. You may want to check the California Newspaper Project if you want to identify other sources. Here's a link to their search page: http://cbsr06.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/starfinder/0?path=newsbib.txt&id=webber&pass=w ebber&OK=OK Feel free to get back in touch after you have the death certificate. I'll try to point you in the right direction after you know where to look.
