    2. Carol De Priest
    3. Hi SOCALers and Yvonne: I'm forwarding this from H-California, a list on the history of California, in hopes that someone could help Denise Spooner (the list administrator) in her research, or could lead her in the right direction. 1. STOKES, Edward and/or James...
    2. Sheila Ruiz Harrell
    3. Hi, I'm trying to find anyone researching these STOKES lines. According to Bancroft's Pioneer Register and Index, page 343-344..."Edward,1840, Engl. sailor who came from Hon. on the Fly, having possibly visited Ca. before. iv. 104, 120"...and "(James), 1834(?), Engl. sailor who in Cal. became a doctor; first appearing on the records of '35, when he served as consulting physician in the case of Gov.Figueroa, but prob. left some vessel a year or two earlier. iii.412, 296" I have the names of their wives...Edward married Maria del Refugio Ortega in San Diego, 12 Jun 1842; James married Maria Josefa de los Dolores Soto in Monterey, 12 Feb 1844... and most of their children, and descendants...what I'm trying to find is more about the parents of these two men, and to see if they were brothers, cousins...or related at all. I have the names of Edward's parents...or a version of their names from the marriage record: "Eduardo Estoc y de Mary Camoes?, del Pueblo de Plymouth en Ynglaterra" (Thomas W Temple, II abstracts of Mission records). Would the ship records for Monterey and/or San Diego be available for those years...1834 and 1840? Where would I find something like that? Thanks in advance for any help! Sheila :) PS I'm sending this message to several lists, so if you receive multiple copies, that's why!

    3. Thanks to all who replied to my post. I may not need to look for an obit now. I somehow managed to find the informant on my grandfathers death certificate listed on the CA deaths. It showed her maiden name. Then I searched CA births for a child born and listed mothers maiden name and I got a match!!! I looked this person up on the phone directory, and will be calling them soon. Wish me luck! 1. NEWSPAPERS IN MIRA LOMA
    2. There are two newspapers that cover the Mira Loma area. Mira Loma is in Riverside County, thus the Press-Enterprise has some following there. The Press-Enterprise address is 3512 14th Street, Riverside, CA. Phone is 909-684-1200. However, Mira Loma actually is much closer to the town of Ontario, and its newspaper, The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, has an edition that covers MIra Loma and the Jurupa Valley. Their address is 2041 East 4th Street, Ontario, CA. Phone is 909-987-6397. Hope this helps. Bobby Dobbins Title in Loma Linda, California

    2. Phil Van Camp
    3. Early in August, I phoned San Diego county to order my own BC. I didn't fill any form out, & as I recall, they only as my mother's maiden name as an identifier. The cert arrived in about a week. Hey, who doesn't know that? Mostly aren't we getting BC's for info like where the parents were from? Of course for someone born 100 or so years back, they might be skeptical you are that person. But, as I recall, one of the alternatives is an executor. I'm my mother's executor, mom was executor for g'ma, a great aunt, & a great aunt. & g'ma was executor for her husband. & the aunts would have been executors for their husbands. So I guess I'd be covered for a few people. Phil [email protected] . -----Original Message----- From: Mary Inglis Sims [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, August 29, 2003 9:27 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Calif. birth & death certificates & the new law The quickest way to obtain certificates is to go in person to the County Recorder in the county where the event occurred or the California State Office of Vital Records in Sacramento. ********************************** The new California law about birth and death certificates requires a special form be completed. If directly related, you must verify your relationship and sign that form in the presence of personnel at the offices. If not directly related, you sign in a different place on that same required form and the certificate you receive will have stamped faintly in the background, the words: INFORMATIONAL - NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY. This certificate is exactly the same except for these words which do not block out any of the information. For genealogists, the Informational certificate presents no problems. 3. Early in June, I ordered three death certificates from three different counties: Los Angeles, Riverside, and Santa Barbara Counties. However, in lieu of sending my personal checks as payments, I enclosed a money order with each written request. I received turn-around service from all the counties, and had three DC copies in my hand only one week after I had mailed my requests.
