    1. Historic Cemetery Legislation
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Hello, Since 2000 I have been involved in trying to get California legislation enacted that will help the plight of our state's historic cemeteries. In 2000 a Bill was introduced and passed both houses of the legislature (only 5 NOE votes) that would have created the California Historic Cemetery Commission. That commission would have cost almost nothing but would have contributed greatly to the review and assessment of the status of our historic graveyards. In the Fall of 2000, GOVERNOR GRAY DAVIS vetoed the Bill even though his office had been consulted as to the Governor's preferences on how the Bill should have been framed. Lately I have been working on portions of existing Bills to ensure that the needs of the historic cemeteries that could be addressed through such Bills are considered. I will be sending out information on a couple of items once they are signed by Governor Davis - if they are not also vetoed by him.... If there are any of you who see a need that may need additional legislation in order to assist the historic cemeteries, please contact me direct at [email protected] I will try to advise you or otherwise determine if or how such legislation might be addressed. I'd like to thank those who in the past have sent me emails of support. Our California ancestors all repose in California cemeteries. The vast majority of the cemeteries in the state are historic and pre-date the 20th century. It is important that we provide protection and preservation of these places of rest. Together we can make a difference. Sincerely, Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves www.usgennet.org/usa/ca/state/

Friends and family: Visitation Wed. from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The Bakersfield Californian, Monday, January 8, 2001 Headline: 2 die in private plane crash San Luis Obispo - Two Bakersfield residents died Saturday evening when their small Cessna plane crashed about one mile south of San Luis Obispo airport, officials reported Sunday. The occupants of the plane were pilot William Bottoms, 35, and his passenger Leah Richardson, 25, the director of marketing for Meadows Field, said Sgt. Mike Sheridan of the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Department. The plane took off about 8:15 p.m and crashed shortly thereafter, said Raymond Bishop, Kern County director of airports. The two had been on a date Saturday and had visited Hearst Castle earlier. They were returning to Bakersfield when the plane went down, Bishop said. The airport tower was closed when Bottoms took off Saturday night, said Carolyn Huber, operation supervisor for the San Luis Obispo County airport. There was no call of distress from the plane. The fog was thick near the airport Saturday night, Huber said. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the weekend crash. The plane was a 1964 Cessna 172 F, owned by James T. Allen of Bakersfield, officials said. Richardson had worked at Meadows Field for about a year, Bishop said. "She was really a capable person.... We will miss her greatly," Bishop said. Her late grandfather had worked for the airport as the deputy airport director. She was from Frankfort, Ind., and attended college at Northwestern Christian College in Minneapolis. Before she worked for the Bakersfield airport, Richardson worked at a bank near her hometown. Bottoms was a "highly qualified" pilot and was also a certified flying instructor, Bishop said. He worked for Loyd's Aviation Services Inc. in Bakersfield and had been a pilot for about 10 years, said his brother, Steve Bottoms. He was a graduate of Wasco High School and had a bachelor's degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, his brother said. He was divorced and had no children, Bottoms said. William Bottoms had wanted to be a pilot since his days in the U. S. Air Force, his brother said. He became an instructor to gain more experience so he could apply to be an airline pilot. "He was a real caring guy, real active, real nice to everybody," Bottoms said. He said his brother enjoyed skiing, rock climbing and hiking. Sharon Kern Co Volunteer

Here is the obit you requested for the following person; ENSOR, Henry age: 50 yrs county of death: 15 (Kern) date of death: 13 Feb 1914 requested by: [email protected] The Bakersfield Californian, Saturday, February 14, 1914 A MILLER AND LUX CARPENTER IS A SUICIDE Henry Ensor Kills Himself By Shot From Revolver at Buttonwillow ------------------------------------- DIED LATE YESTERDAY ------------------------------------- Leaves Note Saying Liquor Was the Cause of His Downfall ------------ Henry Ensor, aged about 52 years and for the past twenty-five years employed as a carpenter for Miller & Lux at their Buttonwillow ranch, committed suicide shortly after 5 o'clock last evening by shooting himself through the head with a 32 caliber automatic Colt's revolver. The inquest over the remains was held at Buttonwillow this morning by Coroner McGinn, the jury returning a verdict of death due to a gunshot wound with suicidal intent, after which the remains were brought to Bakersfield by J. C. Flickenger and placed in the parlors of Templeton & Company to await word from relatives regarding interment. No direct cause for the act is known, although intimate friends of Ensor say that he has been an unsuccessful speculator in oil lands of late and think that is the possible reason. A note on the dresser in the dead man's room, written in a nervous hand and unsigned, read as follows: "Liquor was the cause of my downfall. I have $1100. Send my body to Springfield." The name of the state was not given, but he often referred to relatives residing in Kentucky and a message was sent there this morning with a view of locating them. He had no known relatives in California. Friends of the deceased noticed that he had been acting strange of late and out of the ordinary, but did not anticipate that he would take his own life. After finishing work yesterday afternoon he went to his room in the ranch bunk house and a few minutes later the report of the shot was heard. A friend in an adjoining room rushed to Ensor's door and saw him lying on the floor with the revolver in one hand and a stream of blood oozing from his head. He survived two hours, but was unconscious all the time. On examination it was found that the bullet entered the left side of his head about an inch above the eye, going entirely through and coming out at the back of the neck. During his long residence in Kern County Ensor made innumerable friends, especially among the employees of the Miller & Lux Company, who were shocked to learn of his untimely death and were at a loss of any definite solution. The body will remain at Templeton & Company's until relatives are located. Sharon Kern Co. Volunteer
