    1. Ca Dept. of Health Services Counter to be closed
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: This comes from Iris Carter Jones, president of the CA Alliance of Genealogical Societies in CA. She was also our legislative watchdog in Sacramento and is still keeping tabs on the legislature until a new person can be found as a replacement. Any takers? Regards Nan [email protected] -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: Iris Jones, INTERNET:[email protected] To: Master List 2, INTERNET:[email protected] Date: 11/19/2003 2:11 PM RE: DHS UPDATE Callifornia DHS UPDATE: Department of Health Services Public Count will be closed as of November 25, 2003 due to Budget Cuts. Officially, last Friday, the administrative order was announced that the Counter will be closed to walk-in applications for vital records and six Department employees will be reassigned. Budget 'cuts to the bone' are cited as the reason the Department of Health Services management has decided that the Public Counter should be closed, in spite of the fact that this is one of the operations that brings revenue into the Department. The reasons, we can all speculate upon, but the fact is that this move will not only affect genealogist and researchers, but the public in general. This includes those who need to obtain birth certificates for children beginning school, college registration, and passports. The one light at the end of the tunnel is that most California County offices will continue to be open for walk-in requests for birth, death, marriage, divorce documents. The Dapartment states that the turn-around time will be four weeks. What, if anything, can be done about this remains to be seen. It is hopeful that with the change of Administration in the Governor's office and new appointees, we may see changes in policy. At this point we can only wait and see. We will continue to monitor the situation. If and when efforts on our part could make a difference, I will let you know. I will stay on top of this problem. His full name, father's full name, and mother's full name is listed. His place of birth is listed, and his date of birth is listed. 2. Sue Silver
    3. Greetings, On the eve of Veterans Day I've been reflecting on the many historic cemeteries in which a vast number of our nation's veterans are still buried. Many, many of those cemeteries are in sad states of repair and care with our civil representatives having ignored their plight and condition for many decades now. As you spend your Tuesday with your co-workers, family or friends, please remember your ancestors who fought for our nation. If you are able, please go to a local historic cemetery and see if the cemeteries where our veterans now rest in peace are in the kind of condition you believe they deserve. If they are not in a well maintained cemetery, take the time to call your local representative and ask that some attention be paid to the neglected cemeteries where these veterans now lie for eternity. Ask them if they would want their ancestors to rest in a place that looks so bad or if they believe the resting places of our veterans should be so disrespected. Please ask them to care, and to help us to show respect for the last "homes" of our pioneer citizens and veterans. Respectfully, Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves

    3. So many have loved this particular poem. I wanted to share it with any who haven't seen it yet. MY ANCESTOR GRAND MOTHER I search for you yet do not even know your name I press on praying my efforts will prove fruitful the records do not list you or the other women who have lived and loved and laughed, gave birth, and died, the records perpetrate the myth that you were never here but I stand whole and bare my soul and vow to find you as I live I search for you in old records, in churches, at the Embassy, in small dimly lit rooms in the back of obscure libraries and archives and pour over barely readable handwritten ledgers with magnifying glass and flashlight I live on mainly toast these days there isn't time for meals or much sleep feeling as I always do, on the very brink of discovery Perhaps THIS will be the day I find the one seemingly insignificant clue, which will lead me to you although I did not find you listed in the Census Records I am not deterred, you may turn up yet, on an Immigration or Naturalization list somewhere perhaps, or maybe tucked away inside some bank of vital statistics, long forgotten like so many others, your name having become lost over the long years Your name could be lying even now amidst the millions of documents stored and locked away safeguarded in the bowels of a giant warehouse all stopped up from apathetic crowds who have long ceased their visits your precious name, lying just inside a myriad of records packed in tight, packed in to stay never guessing I would come My Poetry Website is at; (Gen and other poems) http://users.rosenet.net/poetryandroses/ My Genealogy Website is at; (check for your surnames) http://www.gaia.edu/genclass/srose/

    1. Fw: World's Best Cemeteries 2003
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Greetings, I received a "news alert" from Forbes Magazine on the above topic. (See the link below to read the article.) After reading the article I felt the need to send the following letter to the editor. If you are having trouble finding funding to help care for the historic cemeteries of your communities, perhaps you will appreciate my message. Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves Forbes.com Editor: Forbes coverage of the subject of the world's best cemeteries keyed into the cost of burial at these places. It focused on cemeteries based upon the most costly, prestigious, and well maintained. While this is all well and fine for the current rich and famous, we have to wonder why it is that Forbes has not discovered that in our own country there are literally thousands of abandoned and neglected historic cemeteries. These are the cemeteries of the people who built this great nation and the states and cities of this union. Yet, in a tragic turn of moral neglect, they are wasting away from lack of care, being bulldozed to make way for new generations of Americans, and being ignored by elected civil authorities. It says a lot about America that we will expend billions of dollars to help reconstruct Iraq but spend nothing on the care of the graves of our own forefathers.
