With the blessing of the good folks at the Godfrey, I'm letting you know that the LA Times is now active and available online. I was using it for about an hour before it was taken down for scheduled maintenance and it will be back online Sunday at 10:00 EST. FLASH: Just a quick note to let you know that two more newspapers are now online for Godfrey Scholars. -Los Angeles Times (1881-1984) and -Washington Post (1877-1988) are now online and searchable by Godfrey Scholars. Simply go to: http://www.iconn.org/cgi-bin/hquestnews/historicalnews enter your Godfrey Library card barcode number and login. You will be able to search the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and New York Times separately or all three at the same time. These two newspapers work the same as the online edition of the New York Times (1851-2001). In all three newspapers you can search on every word, in every article even the ads. Each article is easy to download, print or save. Having these newspapers online makes it even easier for genealogists to find obituary notices, birth and wedding announcements along with biographical sketches and news stories. It has never been easier for genealogical research and the Godfrey Memorial Library is pleased to do our part to help out. I had a list of terms that described racial mixtures of the early settlers as set down by the Spanish government. There were more than 20 such terms and I can no longer find the list. Once again, someone requested this list of racial designations and I can't help her. Does anyone have this list and can someone post it to SOCAL-L? It would be much appreciated. Or can it be found on SOMOS PRIMOS? Gary Radcliffe West Covina, CA
A while ago, there was a lister who would lookup on his information disk marriages using surnames (Maiden names, etc.) of people. If anyone can lead me in the right direction, I'd surely appreciate it. I'm looking for the marriage of Theodora Lucille (FAVERS) Dunn. I just found out she died in 1994 (?). Would like to know who she married. She was once married to William Eugene Doutherd in St. Louis, MO, in 1936. They had two children. I would like to pursue this line of genealogy. I probably can't get a death certificate because it's within the time restriction, but I'm going to check out L.A. County's registrar's office to see if I can get a look see. Also, would like to know if there is someone (perhaps the same person) who can look up births for me (1940's, 1950's). Thanks, List. Greetings, For those who have participated in reading my previous posts regarding California cemeteries and the problems we have had, you may not have noticed that the California Saving Graves website is hosted by US GenNet which is a totally FREE and AD FREE provider. US GenNet is in need of funds to help it continue to provide totally FREE genealogy website services. They are asking for help to fund them in the coming year. I am pledging to send them $200 in February (after I receive my annual gift income). I would like to ask anyone who would like to contribute to this most worthy project/cause to donate whatever amount you might be able to contribute. Every $5 or $10 donation multiplies by the numbers of people donating. "Every little bit helps." And it's TAX DEDUCTIBLE! If you would like to contribute, here is the address: Treasurer: Rhoda Fone 999 Bridgeport Way Rio Vista, California 94571 [Please make checks payable to USGenNet] Thanks so much for your support. Hi! I'm trying to find 3 of my cousins or any of their descendants. They were born Bonnie, Beverly and Barbara GROVER. All were born in Los Angeles County, California. Their parents were Marguerite (Peggy) and Austin Lloyd (Mickey) GROVER. Bonnie was born in 1927 and married (1) David Fawcett and (2) Perry Robert Solomon. Bonnie and David had 2 children, Barbara Lynn FAWCETT and William Lloyd FAWCETT. Barbara married a man named KRASNOR and had 2 boys, Perry and Blake. Beverly was born in 1928 and died in 1987. She married John Edwin SUNDOEN and they had 5 children, Janice Lynne. John Edwin, Marta Marie, Benjamin Rowe and Thomas Andrew. Janice was born in Los Angeles County, the other 4 were born in San Bernardino County. Though I don't know when they moved, I do know John and Bev were living in Redding when she died. Barbara was born in 1929. She married (1) James Bailey and (2) Gene Allen MATITSON. Barbara and Gene had 3 children, Jody Jean, Rod Allen, and Stephanie Rose. I have no idea where any of the family is. I've started collecting photos of the family and wanted to connect with anyone from these families and share/exchange photographs and information. If anyone can give me any leads, I'd really appreciate it. Judy Bingham Fullerton, CA
Hi Karla, Just read this so might be too late to help. Our AVILA ancestors are always up for grabs! We have an AVILA man who marr. an OSUNA girl prior to 1850 at Mission San Gabriel. The banns of marr. had to be cried 3xs first down in Sinaloa at the mission before the wedding could take place in San Gabriel because the OSUNA family had been at Mission San Gabriel some yrs. before the AVILAS arrived. This story is true. No family legend here. You may find dates & names in MARIE NORTHRUP vol 1 - think it's 1. You may also E mail me for details if you'd like MORGAN to use this event in her Ca. Mission Project. I always help abt 30 4th graders every yr. with their projects. Word seems to spread here in Capistrano abt. my Ca. books. Not sure where each is buried, but I do recall the AVILA mother is buried at San Gabriel. This shows some consistancy & importance of Mission San Gabriel in California's history. Rita AVILA - OLD SPANISH CA FAMILY In a message dated 11/24/2003 6:33:02 AM Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > Does anyone have an ancestor we could borrow? If you know that a couple was married at San Gabriel and that > there are references > available to us, we'd appreciate some names.
My niece's 4th Grade California mission project is due much sooner than I had anticipated. We're going to have to take a few shortcuts, so I'm asking for help! My niece (Morgan) has selected San Gabriel Mission for her project. Okay, so maybe she was coaxed a little to choose San Gabriel. One of the things I'd like for Morgan to understand and convey in her report is how far the early Californians had to travel to marry at the mission. I thought she could document a few marriages by finding proof (or at least a reference) of the marriage taking place at San Gabriel; find the bride and groom in the 1850 census; use one of the rancho maps (I believe I have several) to illustrate where the couple lived and how far the rancho was from the mission. We could actually go earlier than 1850 by leaving out the census reference. Here's the shortcut we're thinking of taking: Does anyone have an ancestor we could borrow? If you know that a couple was married at San Gabriel and that there are references available to us, we'd appreciate some names. And if the same ancestors were baptized at San Gabriel AND are buried there, that would show how much the mission was a part of the early Californian's lives. Rather than build a mission - so overdone! and there are even kits you can buy now to make it easier for the parents to get the job done in time! - Morgan will be visiting San Gabriel for her extra credit. She will be taking photographs of the cemetery and stones. We appreciate any help or hints. Karla in Bakersfield --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
