Fred A. Sikes, 87, who passed away November 20, 2005. A homegoing celebration will be held Friday, December 2, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Cain Memorial AME Church, 630 California Avenue. Bishop Carolyn Tyler Guidry, Presiding Prelate of the 16th Episcopal District of the AME Church, is eulogizing. Rev. Fred A. Sikes pastored at St. Paul AME Church in Pixley, California and New Allen Chapel in Delano, California. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby L. Sikes, his daughter, Mary Louise Shaw and a grandson, Samuel Allen Sikes. He leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his homegoing, his wife, Lena Mae Stephens-Sikes; two sons, Alfred E. Sikes and Alvin K. Sikes both of Bakersfield, California; grandchildren, Frederick R. Sikes, Brandon M. Sikes, Sade Sikes, Alexis Sikes, Elle Sikes, Alana Sikes, Paul Shaw, Pam Shaw, Paula Pollard, Evangelist Paulette Chambers, Pandora Calhoun, Phillip Shaw, and Phyllis Joy. He also leaves behind 16 great- grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren. Rev. Fred A. Sikes will be deeply and sincerely missed by all who knew and loved him. (Jessie) 1935 - 2005 Jesus (Jessie) G. Murillo of Huntington Beach March 29, 1935 - Nov. 27th 2005 Jessie was born March 29, 1935 in Lordsburgs, New Mexico. Jessie was raised in Bakersfield, California. He was employed by Luckys as a meat cutter for 43 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Juan and Christina Murillo; brothers Adon and Joe Murillo; grandson Michael Murillo and nephew John Joseph (J.J.) Lopez. He is survived by his wife Cecilia Murillo; son Rick and wife Rosie Murillo; daughter Candy and husband Michael Griffith; stepson, Christopher Lopez (son); sisters Mary and husband Mickey Zaragoza from Arizona; Lupe Leon; Concha and husband Don Estrada; Betty and husband Fred Lopez; Juanita Murillo Patton; brother; Mickey Murillo; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Monsignor Michael Braun will officiate and interment will follow at Union Cemetery. Frank was born in Napa, Pennsylvania to Nick and Sarah Molinaro. He was a wonderful provider who took special care of his family and retired from the State. Frank was a very loving, giving man, who enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Among his many pleasures, Frank loved golfing. A note of special interest, Frank was a proud Past Member of the Italian Catholic Federation. Dec. 3, 10:00 a.m. Services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., for Jack Millard, 75, who passed away November 28, 2005 in Bakersfield. Chaplain Gary Bashor will officiate. Jack was born on April 24, 1930 in San Jose, California. He graduated from Paso Robles High School in 1948. Jack was a long time member of the Masonic Lodge in Paso Robles. Jack's thirty-three year career with Bank of America began at their Paso Robles branch. Jack later transferred to numerous branches, some of which included Stockton, Dos Palos and Lindsay. In 1972, he moved to Bakersfield, where he was assigned as Manager and Vice President of the Bakersfield main office. After leaving Bank of America in 1988, he became the Treasurer/Trustee for Marshall E. Helm Corporation dba Greenlawn Mortuaries and Cemeteries where he remained until his untimely death. Jack is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years Carol Millard of Bakersfield; daughters Lisa Millard of Bakersfield, and Cheryl Smith of Woodland; son Mike Millard of San Bernardino; father-in-law and mother-in-law Glen and Mary Duncan of Woodlake; aunt Sarah Watt of Woodlake; numerous cousins; countless friends and extended family Marshal Helm and all the staff of Greenlawn Mortuary. In August of 1993 Jack and his family were blessed when Jack received a heart transplant at UCLA. He was always proud to celebrate two birthdays each year. Hogan-Burke March 21, 1922 - November 23, 2005 Opal L. Hogan-Burke was born on March 21, 1922, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Opal came to California in the early 1950s at which time she worked for Mattel toys for many years. In 1967 she moved to Buttonwillow, California. From 1986-1996, Opal worked as Site Manager for the Senior Citizens in Buttonwillow. She really enjoyed seeing her many friends everyday. When she wasnt working she was fishing. She could stay out there all day long, whether they were biting or not!! In 1986, she married Moses J. Burke. He could tell some really funny storiesyou just had to be there! Their favorite pastime was playing dominoes. Mr. Moses J. Burke passed away October 31, 1997 and at that time Opal moved to Bakersfield, California. Opal spent a lot of time with her granddaughters. The girls would spend almost every Friday night with her and on Saturday, they would go eat or go shopping! You could find them at Dennys, IHOP, Home Town Buffet or the 99 cents store!!! That was their special time with Grandma. She took time to teach them how to cook, iron, fish, play dominoes and nag!!! Opal L. Hogan-Burke leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life, one daughter, Sharmaine Murchison and husband, Rev. Dwight Murchison; granddaughters, Kaleiah and Azarriah; a special friend, Nettie Cockrell of Buttonwillow, California; and a host of other relatives and cherished friends. Everyone was special to her. I would like to extend a special thanks to her doctor, Dr. Albert J. Peinado and his staff. I would also like to say thank you to all of my friends who stood by me. She passed away in Bakersfield, California, on November 29, 2005. In 1943, after attending the University of Minnesota, Ti met and married a dentist, Julius E. Doc Hoffman, a Major in the U.S. Army. They were married for 56 years and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoor life of Northern Minnesota. Ti managed Docs dental practice and was his true partner in every way. Ti was preceded in death by her husband, Doc and her daughter, Judy Auchampach. A native of Taft, CA she lived in Castro Valley for 50 years before moving to Reno. Gerry was a founding member of Transfiguration Parish of Castro Valley and an active member of the Reginas. She served the Castro Valley Schools in many capacities, She is survived by her five children, Martha, John (Eloise), Joe (Jeri) and Mary Gularte and Monica (Robert) Cauthen. Ernie was born April 28, 1934 to Ernest and Annie (Rowe) Evans in Urbanna, Virginia. Ernie is survived by his wife of 44 years, Martha (Beatty) Evans; his daughter, Tracy Evans Roseboom of San Mateo, California; and his sister, Marlene (Evans) Garcia of Hampton, Virginia. After serving in the Navy during the Korean War, Ernie went on to play football at Virginia Tech and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Soon after graduation, in 1963, Ernie, Martha and Tracy worked for North American, Lockheed and Northrop on such projects as the X-15, F-5, SR-71, L-1011 and the F-20 Tigershark. Ernie felt lucky in life as he felt he never spent a day working but rather a career doing something he loved. Ernie was a member of the Elks for nearly 40 years and enjoyed spending time at both the Lancaster and Wofford Heights lodges. He loved exploring the back roads of the desert in his SUV, fishing, spending time on the waters of Lake Powell aboard the Houseboat Tradewinds and sharing a bad joke and a good laugh with many friends. Escalera was born on March 22, 1920 in Brawley, CA. Our Dad proudly served his country as a member of the 409th Infantry Regiment in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945. Salvador served two years as a medical technician and the remaining two years as an infantryman. Salvador was awarded three Bronze Stars and four Campaign medals for his meritorious achievement in ground combat during his military tenure in Africa and Germany. While on leave Salvador met and later married the love of his life Socorro Aros. They remained together for 60 wonderful years. Together they raised 5 unique children. Salvador was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 26 years. Among Salvador and Socorro's passions was taking their family on yearly camping trips to Sequoia National Park and Carpinteria. Salvador never missed a Dodger game whether on television or his transistor radio. His favorite spectator seat was his plush, living room recliner. Salvador also loved poker games at the park during family functions. Our Dad will be united in Heaven with his parents, Casimiro and Agapita Escalera; brothers, Arturo and Raul Escalera; sister, Helen Suniga; grandson, Salvador Escalera III and granddaughter, Trini Escalera. Our Dad is survived by his loving wife, Socorro; sons and daughter-in-law, Ernest and Francie Escalera, Salvador Escalera Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law, Celia and Dino Castillo, Carolina and Alex Monsibais Jr. and Magdalena and John Leon; grandchildren, Salvador Escalera IV, Nicole Escalera, Barbara Escalera, Angela Lyman, Simidawn Castillo, Alex Monsibais III, Melanie Monsibais-Gradowitz, Matthew Monsibais, Dylan Salvador Monsibais, John Leon Jr., Noel Leon, Joel Leon; 22 great-grandchildren and numerous friends and relatives. No visitation, private internment. Bill was born in Bakersfield, California on December 16, 1936, to Ruby Virginia and David Crockett Collup. He attended Standard Elementary and Bakersfield High School. He met and married Mary Ellen Grider, the love of his life, in 1954 while working at the Fox Theater. Bill is survived by his wife, Mary of 51 years; and son, Steve and his wife, Athena; and grandsons, Sam, Seth and Levi; son, Clay and Evelyn; and granddaughters, Lauren and Cassandra; and son, Jared; and grandsons, Brandon and Justin; sisters, Pat Park of Fresno and Dixie Schroeder and husband, John of Bakersfield; and numerous nieces and nephews who he cherished. Bill also loved the Lord who he accepted as his personal savior in 1972 while watching a Billy Graham Crusade on TV! One of Bill's proudest achievements was his Marine Corp service from 1954 to 1958. His life work began in 1962 with the Kern County Fire Department. He retired as a Captain in 1991. Bill was a beloved father figure to more than just his own three sons and grandchildren. He loved his annual fishing trips to Alaska, camping trips with the family, the Rendezvous' with the Bakersfield Muzzle Loaders, and the reunions with the Marines who served with him on the USS Boxer. He had a normal childhood with a good work ethic instilled in him by his parents, Ernest and Elizabeth Moon. He joined the Navy after high school in 1945. During which time he met and married Helen Neal. They moved to Ontario, California where he went to work for Armstrong Nurseries around 1950. The family was transferred to Wasco, CA, in 1955 where he eventually became Production Supervisor over the Rose Dept. He stayed in the rose business until 1993, when a slight heart attack forced him to retire. Joe and Helen then moved to Bakersfield to be closer to their physicians. He loved singing, dancing and bowling, but most of all he loved his wife of 58 years, Helen, who preceded him in death on March 14, 2005. Also preceding him in death were his parents; his son-in-law, Frank Wheeler and great-granddaughter, Nicole Barnett. He is survived by his son, Larry Moon; daughter-in-law, Jane Moon of Bakersfield; daughter, Chris Wheeler and daughter, Thelma and son-in-law, Charles Tatum of Wasco, CA; 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She and husband, DeWitt Logan Mattson, came to Buttonwillow in 1938 where they farmed until his death in 1962. She also sold insurance for Farm Bureau and was an income tax preparer for H & R Block. Helen moved to Bakersfield in 1963 where she studied cosmetology and became a certified instructor. She taught at Federicos and Marinello Combers Beauty Schools in Bakersfield and a school in Glendale for over 10 years. Under her leadership as manager of these schools she helped many students obtain scholarships and learn a useful trade. Later she owned and operated M'Lady Salon until retirement in the 1980s. Helen Mattson possessed an indomitable spirit, always looked at the bright side and was quick to laugh. Loving and supporting her family was one of her highest values. Helen served as an active 4H volunteer and Girl Scout leader when her children were growing up. She kept in close contact with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, hosting or participating in family gatherings throughout her life. Helen succumbed on Thanksgiving Day after a long battle with asthma. She is survived by her five children, Doris Jean Barnes (Bakersfield), Phyllis Joan McClure (Bakersfield), Donald Eugene Mattson (Corvallis, OR), Allen Roy Mattson (West Palm Beach Gardens, FL), Christine Margaret Bruhn (Davis, CA); 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and their families. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 4, at 2:30 p.m., at the Church of Christ, 425 South H Street, Bakersfield, CA 93304 (ph: 832-7464). The family requests no flowers. Because of her love for children and gardening, the family asks that people remember Helen through donations for scholarships for children to attend the Yosemite Bible Camp (in care of Church of Christ at the above address) or a favorite charity. Martin Feb. 23, 1930 - Nov. 29, 2005 Wendell was born on February 23, 1930 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and went to be with the Lord on November 29, 2005, in Bakersfield, California. He moved to Long Beach and was drafted by the Army while still in high school. He went to serve his country in 1949. In 1951 he met Elma the love of his life. They were married on July 10, 1952 after settling in Bakersfield. He was employed with Southern Pacific Railroad for 43 years. Wendell was a very wonderful man who not only loved the Lord, but thrived on Him too. He was a wonderful and loving brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Gladys and Bud Martin and brother, Darryl B. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Elma (his bride); sister, Jim Bob and husband, Bill of WA; sister, Reba of ID; daughters, Wendi of Taft, CA, Cindi and husband, Danny of Arroyo Grande, CA and Micha of Bakersfield, CA; grandchildren, Megan and husband, Mike, Devin and husband, Jason, Bree and husband, Darryl, Boone and Emilee; 8 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Makayla, Kade, Jayden, Trinity, Konner, little Wendell and one on the way; Uncle Yak and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. His family moved to California in 1949. He graduated from Tulare High School in 1952 and in 1954 he married Joyce Woodruff. He then went to California State University in Fresno where he received a BS degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation he worked for the California Division of High Highways for five years and then moved to Bakersfield to take a position in Public Works with the City of Bakersfield in 1962. He held the position of Public Works Director for many years until he was appointed City Manager. He retired from that position in 1992, and with partners, Dale Mills and Ken Secor, formed a consulting business known as Hawley, Mills and Secor. He was preceded in death by his mother and dad, Mary and Dave Hawley of Tulare and his brother, David Hawley of Little Rock, Arkansas. Also, his three nephews, Royce Hawley of Modesto, Patrick Brown of Little Rock, Arkansas and Mike Brazil of Tulare. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hawley and his two children, James Hawley and wife, Connie; daughter, Sherri Peckler and husband, Tim, all of Bakersfield; his six grandchildren, Maverick Hawley, Brent Faires, Jacob Faires, Vincent Peckler, Jeff Faires and Mary Gruber, Scott Faires and his wife, Holly; two great-grandchildren, Kallin Faires and Amelia Fuentes. He is also survived by six sisters, Mary Harvey and husband, Keith of Modesto, Naomi Brazil and husband, Manuel of Tulare, Barbara Brown of Tulare, Linda Beck of Fairfield, Lois Alloway and husband, Darrel of Atlanta, Georgia, Dana Young and husband, Dennis of Tulare; brother, Dean Hawley and wife, Deann of Bakersfield; and sister-in-law, Jean Hawley (surviving wife of David Hawley, Dales brother) of Little Rock, Arkansas; many nieces and nephews.
