Seeking ancestors of: REBECKAH SNOW b. Oct. 1, 1793 vic. of Providence RI; marr Thomas Force Palmer May 30, 1815 at Broadalbin, Montgomery Co. (today Fulton Co) NY; died Oct. 26, 1854 Freedom Twp., LaSalle Co. IL . . . . she is my brick wall! What is known . . . . She likely located RI to Montgomery Co., NY with her parents & siblings (names unknown) circa 1800-1810. Thomas Force Palmer b. Woodbridge NJ 1787 & removed with his parents to NY shortly thereafter. Served War of 1812 under Capt Isaac Wilson in Churchill's NY Militia Thomas & Rebeckah married May 30, 1815 at Broadalbin, Montgomery Co., NY. In my possession is a ladder back, rush seat rocking chair given to them as a wedding present. By 1818 they had moved to Warsaw, Genesse Co. NY, where Thomas operated a grist mill with his father, Ephraim Palmer (1760-1852). In 1820 census T&R are in Warsaw, and live next door to Samuel Snow. Who also has small children. I have assumed this Samuel to be brother of Rebeckah. Does anyone have any connection or line to this Samuel Snow? This could be a huge help. T&R's first five children are b. Warsaw. By August of 1823 they have moved to Conewango, Catteraugus Co. NY, where their last child (my g. grandfather) is born, and Thomas becomes a school teacher. In May 1832 T&R purchased abt 80 ac. land near Chatham, Medina Co. OH. Their six children, dates and spouses are: Margaret McCoon Palmer b. Mar 1, 1816, d. May 24, 1834, bur. Medina Co. OH. dsp Lydia Hubbard Palmer, b. Aug 12, 1817. Marr. Orrin Gridley Jun 12, 1839, probably at Medina Co. OH. She died Dec 22, 1903. A note says: "they moved to Clear Lake IA." But gives no date. They had four children: Henry Orrin Gridley b. 1840, d. 1842; Henrietta Gridley b. Jun 23, 1843 marr. Mar 9, 1871 to Isaac Duke (1844/1925); she d. Dec 3, 1907. Sarah Auretta Gridley b. Feb 22, 1847, marr. Sep 24, 1867 to Wm. O. Cooper. They had 2 dau. b. 1870-72; Sarah d. Apr 12, 1895. Shubael Orrin Gridley, b. Jun 28, 1849, marr Sep 24, 1870 to Lepha Eddy. He d. at Clear Lake, IA Oct. 19, 1925. Had two children: Novella b. 1872 never had children; Eddy Bernard Gridley b. 1874; Orrin Ephraim Gridley b. 1876; Lydia Venila Gridley d.y. Joseph Snow Palmer b. Apr 29, 1819, d. Jul 19, 1899. Marr. Dec 15, 1845 Harrisville OH to Cynthia Parker. They had numerous children. Eliza Ann Palmer b. May 27, 1822. Marr. Lorin A. William Oct 3, 1841. She died at Riverside IA Apr 13, 1895. One daughter Nora, and all of her desc. are known. Chloe Allen Palmer b. Dec 24, 1825. Marr Feb. 2, 1854 to Noah Post. She died Sep 24, 1907. They lived in Kansas and had son Zina Post, daughter Zara Post. Descendants uncertain. Ephraim Milo Palmer b. Dec. 13, 1828 Conewango, NY. Went to Calif. Gold fields in 1850, returned to IL 1858. Marr to Sarah H. Butler at Freedom Twp. LaSalle Co. IL Jun 13, 1861. Died at Prairie Center, IL Jan 30, 1892. One son., Walter Butler Palmer b. 1868. All desc. known. With the exception of Ephraim, of the children's names are on the Palmer side. So it seems to me that the names of her children should shed a clue on the names of Rebeckah's parents. Was her father's name Joseph? Or maybe Samuel, as we are fairly certain that she had a brother, Samuel. Was her mother's maiden name McCoon, Hubbard, or Allen? It would almost seem that it must be one of the three. Ideas and thoughts welcome, and if anyone doing Snow research comes upon some clues please let me know. We have named our first daughter: Rebeckah Snow Burrows . . . and such a shame that her namesake is lost. Peter Burrows, Annapolis, MD (save as: SNOW 030399.#Q).
Hi everyone, The below url was posted to the NC list and I wanted to share it. I went to the site and found some very interesting memorabilia. Most items are for sale, but I found a few (pictures) that the only cost is copying and postage. You can also post family/genealogy related items that you are searching for or have for sale. FYI, I received this today from the NHROCKIN-L@rootsweb.com List. It was sent to that list from > grc@haystack.mit.edu (Glenn Campbell) < who wrote the following: "This is a bit long winded but worth reading. PLEASE circulate, at least the address of the FAMILY SEARCH, to any roots-l you may belong (to) so that the LDS will consider to keep it running." ----Original Message----- From: Virginia Ewing [mailto:vewing@ctesc.net] Sent: Monday, March 01, 1999 5:00 PM Subject: LDS FAMILY SEARCH COMING SOON As the director of a LDS Family History Center, I have received a notice from Salt Lake LDS FHL, announcing the Beta testing of Family Search on line. It is not yet up, a problem with a piece of equipment, but will be starting sometimes this month and will be up only a few weeks as a test run. If there is not a lot of interest it will be taken off and not put back on. So spread the word and keep trying to get through. When it comes on line the URL will be: > www.familysearch.org <. I have not been told exactly what will be available but know at least the Ancestral File and Family History Library Catalog will be included. Family Search is the name of the program we have on CDs in all LDS FHCs. Some public libraries also have this program. FS includes the IGI, Ancestral File, Family History Library Catalog, Social Security Death Records, Koran and Vietnam war death records, and Scottish Church Records. For those of you not familiar with the various searches, the IGI is the International Genealogical Index. It includes, in alphabetical order, all of the names that have been sent to the Temples to have ordinances performed in their name. Names in the IGI are usually submitted by members, but not always. Non-members also submit their family names to get them into the IGI. Some of the marriages may have been part of extraction programs. The names were taken from courthouse records and checked and rechecked by several volunteers before being accepted as correct. Most people do try to send in accurate information but there are many mistakes. My advice is, always check the original source. Use the IGI to find where people with your surname would have lived and order the census and court records from that area. Ancestral File is Gedcoms of group and pedigree sheets sent in by members and non-members. The name and address of the submitter is included and hopefully will allow you to contact others working on your line. If the address is out of date sometimes a letter to the Membership dept. in Salt Lake will get you a correct address if the person was a member of the LDS church. Once again, the material is only as good as the research that went into it and some of it is pretty bad. Check it out before you 'adopt' it. If you find a mistake on Ancestral File, you can send in your corrections, along with your sources of proof, and it will be noted in the next update. The first submitter does not have to provide proof, but you do, if you are making a correction. You can add additions to a file, or submit a new file. You do not have to be a member to submit material. The Family History Library Catalog is a listing of every book, film and fiche available at the Salt Lake City LDS Family History Library. This allows us to find what is available for each locality, world-wide. It includes the FHL call numbers and a description of what is included in the film/fiche or book. The material from the books and film/fiche will not be on line. That is not something they can do, at this time. Hopefully it will be a possibility some time in the distant future. The film and fiche will still have to be ordered through FHC. Microfilm and microfiche are the property of the FHL and are sent into the care of the LDS FHC director and must remain under her/his care until returned. For this reason they are never allowed to be taken from the LDS FHC. Almost all of the microfilm and microfiche at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City can be ordered into any LDS FHL, anywhere in the world, but there are a few exceptions. Copyright laws prevent them from using material without the written consent of the owner. Some of the film and fiche where filmed by companies other than the LDS Church and permission to circulate these film to LDS FHCs has been denied. There will be a notice included in the description, saying it can not be circulated. Many of the SC microfilm where made by a company who has refused permission to allow the film to be circulated, but there are many microfilm available for SC, some covering the same material that is on the restricted film. The LDS FHL is a non-profit organization, and that is why it still cost only 15 cents a sheet for a microfiche, $3.25 plus tax to rent a microfilm for a month [may be more in other countries] and the SourceGuide and other home use programs are sold at such a reasonable price. We aren't allowed to make a profit, even in the FHCs. The books that are listed are not loaned out but can sometimes be obtained through an Inter-library loan through your public library. You can request copies of pages and if a book is indexed, by ordering the index you can see if your people would have been listed. In cases where the copyright has expired the book may have been filmed or can be filmed upon request. Never hurts to ask. The site is at:http://lds-online.com/family.htm An article from the Global Gazette in February says: LDS Family History Library WebSite in 1999 Rumors are flying about the possibility that the Family History Library in Salt Lake City might be starting a website. It's true. Curt Witcher, a director of GENTECH, attended their annual conference recently in Utah and came back with details about this long-awaited site. He shared them with me. The site will begin sometime in the second quarter of this year. Its name will be FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Services. FamilySearch is the copyright name of their CD-ROM genealogical indexes. This might make you think that these indexes will be available at the site, but this is not so. I know that many people will be disappointed that the International Genealogical Index and Ancestry File will not be included initially on the site... The online site will have the Family History Library Catalog. This is not the same as the version at the family history centers. It will be considerably enhanced. As well as author, title and LDS film number, it will include place names, surnames, keywords and subjects, all in searchable fields. This means that for the first time, researchers will be able to use the Family History Library catalog in the same way they use online library catalogs elsewhere (in public or academic libraries). The flexibility of the catalog will mean that we can find more books and films, more easily. The big question for most people who live far from Salt Lake (or even far from a branch family history center) is: when will the other FamilySearch options be included on the website. No decisions have been made about this yet. As I mentioned in my last column, the Genealogical Society of Utah, the family history arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has now begun a publications program selling sets of CD-ROMs on particular topics. I mentioned a six-disk set of British vital records indexes. Witcher informs me there are also sets of Australian Vital Records (price US$5.00) and United States Vital Records (price US$15.00). At the moment I am unsure exactly what is on these. Other projected series to be made available soon are vital records sets for Continental Europe, Latin America and Scandinavia, Ellis Island immigration records, the 1880 U.S. census and the 1881 British census (scheduled for summer 1999). The latter will be grouped in regions, but there will also be a nation-wide index.

I have been to the Federation of Genealogist's conferece and the PALAM national conference, Both were well done. Another option, however, is to get audio tapes of speaker's presentations at a number of national conferences. They are available from Repeat Performances. They have a web site and the tapes are of excellent quality. I have no connection to Repeat Performances, I just like their tapes. Kathleen

Conference In The States I had a question asked me on another list, so thought I would share with the many members of this list just for information purposes. >Question: >Has anyone attended any genealogy workshops/conferences or the like? I've >been looking for one, just out of curiosity, but I hate to throw money away- >can anyone tell me if they're worth it?? > I have been to 2 NGS (National Genealogy Society) Conferences over the years. One in Portland OR and one in Valley Forge PA. There is to be another one here in Richmond VA in May. I can tell you that I have enjoyed them very much and gotten information that has sent me in the right direction on my searches. The speakers are experienced and the lectures well prepared. I felt my money was well spent. You have a large selection of things to choose from and then get a syllabus on all the classes that were given and also can purchse vidio and/or audio tapes of the classes. The cost of traveling and motels can be expensive but, I for one will go everytime one is close enough to me or I can come up with the funds to attend. I went to a crochet conference in Atlanta last summer and went away shaking my head because of the lack of quality of the conference and the cost was high and lectures not well prepared. Now this is just MHO and I am not connected to the conference in anyway except that I will be attending. If you would like to know more about this conference you can go online to see about it. http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/conference/frame_states.html I can tell you right now the conference hotel is already booked at the special price for the conference but has rooms at the higher rate available. There are some other places near by that still had rooms a couple weeks ago. I will be staying at Holiday Inn Central (804) 359-9441(ext 560) 3207 North Blvd. Richmond VA. The price was about 70.00 per night and I can supply transporation to a couple folks if you stay there and we can work out times. It is about 15 minutes from the conference center. Right now a friend from MD and I are sharing a room. If you are interested contact me by personal email so we do not clog up the list. Sunday we had a virus in our AOL and my genius (he really is) son restored our AOLl However in doing so we could not copy our organize files into the new AOL because apparently one of those files had the virus. Anyway, now I have to get all my LINKS back......and I had about 75 or so of them.....most for my Genealogy stuff. Some of them are easy to get back, but others aren't. Please if you have a gen website could you email it to me? I have all the rootsweb and gen forum and archives links, but hadn't yet had a chance to look thru all the personal websites I got from previous emails. I had just bookmarked them. I also lost my address book......Some of it I can rebuild from the Buddy List, but if you weren't on aol, I probably didn't have your address. I'm not even sure if this will reach everyone I had on the original list....but every little bit helps. Thanks Pat
