My grandfather worked for the Great Northern Railway so I thought I would try to get some information about him and/or it. I received this communication back. Thought it might be helpful to those of you are involved in a similar search. I did receive permission from the sender to circulate the e-mail below. Subj: Re: Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen 1929-1960 Date: 8/19/99 8:57:58 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: arv@spot.Colorado.EDU (Archives) Reply-to: arv@spot.Colorado.EDU (Archives) To: BOSWELLGR@aol.com Dear Ms. Petrucci: While I might be mistaken, it seems unlikely that your paternal Grandfather would have been in the BRT, as "clerks" had their own union. This union was the Order of Railroad Clerks of America (1899-1919), the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks, Freight handlers, Express and Station Employees (1919-1967), and The Brotherhood of Railway, Airline, and Steamship Clerks, Freight handlers, Express and Station Employees (1967-?). Currently, after 20 years of union mergers, this union may be part of either the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (which contains some clerks), or the United Transportation Union. Unfortunately, our BRT Collection consists almost entirely of grievance files and cases, and while it does list union members submitting grievances, it is not a nationwide list. Yours is one of many genealogical requests regarding the BRT received recently. I should advise you that while genealogical research into labor union records is becoming more common in recent years, the most profitable labor collections for genealogical purposes are local records. You may know this, but Labor Unions are generally bureaucratic in their structure, with local unions reporting to districts, districts reporting to regions, and regions reporting to the international headquarters. Each level deals with a particular range of duties and concerns. Locals keep the records of their dues paying membership, keep minutes of their meetings, and in the last 40-50 years, develop greivance, health and insurance files on their membership. Usually, policy, strike, financial, and other larger concerns occupy regional, district, and international offices. Hence, you need to find out the locals of which interest you. Once you find out where your subjects worked and which locals they belonged to, then you can start looking for the local papers. I have found local records from Wisconsin and New York, but that does not mean other locals are not deposited in a university archives. You may wish to contact the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers or the United Transportation Union, as several railroad unions merged to form the UTU. BLE or UTU locals may still hold old BRT files. Our BRT papers are from a general adjustment committee and contain grievance files from the 1920s-the 1960s. Unfortunately, the guide is chronological and lists no names. I am uncertain whether these records would repay the cost of a trip across the country to Colorado. Respectfully, David M. It provides information regarding the child's race, sex, birth date, and parent's names. Due to the Civil War, records for 1861, 1862 and 1863 were not available.

Nicholas Snow included this volume in their library, which can be ordered through the General Society of Mayflower Descendants 4 Winslow Street, Plymouth, MA 02360. Request 2nd edition as it has undergone one revision since being first issued in 1992. Last time I checked it was $35.00. The Silver Series is found in most County or State Genealogy Libraries and often in many local libraries who have large genealogy collections.
Good morning, again, to the SNOW list members, I hate to keep bothering the list with what has probably been discussed in the past, but my SNOW database appears to be completely fouled up. I now have the subject JOSEPH SNOW being born in two different places, with two different sets of parents, and both marrying a MARY SEARS at the same time. The first set of parents is NATHANIEL and HANNAH (PARSLOW) SNOW. With this set of parents, JOSEPH was born in Eastham, MA, and the source I have is the Eastham Vital Records (no page number). The second set of parents is EDWARD and SARAH (FREEMAN) SNOW. With this set of parents, JOSEPH is born in Harwich, MA, and the source is Harwich, MA Church Records. I show that both JOSEPH's married MARY SEARS, November 30, 1738, in either Eastham or Harwich. The Harwich marriage has as a source the Harwich, MA Church Records. If anyone on the list has any information they are willing to share to straighten my latest mess, it would be appreciated. In genealogically barren Thailand, I do not have access to much research material. Thanks, again, in advance. Rick in Thailand
Good morning to the SNOW list members, I have the subject JANE SNOW's in my database, both claiming to be the wife of ICHABOD HIGGINS. While this is possible, I would like to confirm it with a SNOW expert. The JANE born March 4, 1715/15, I have as the daughter of BENJAMIN and THANKFUL BOWERMAN/BOREMAN) SNOW. I have no death date, but she supposedly married ICHABOD December 31, 1731, at Eastham, and had at least four children between 1732 and 1742. The JANE born April 22, 1716, I have as the daughter of STEPHEN and MARGARET (ELKINS) SNOW. I have no death date or marriage date to ICHABOD, and show no children born. This JANE I show as also marrying a LEVI SMITH after October 08, 1737, which I am assuming is the date of the posting of their intention. This makes little sense since I show that ICHABOD died about 1752. (Middlesex, CT Probate Records, Vol. 1, pg. 90) If anyone on the list has any information they are willing to share that would help to straighten out the situation, it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Rick in Thailand

Roberta, I don't know anything about your Snow's but I live in Eagle Rock, Missouri. It's on Roaring River. Roaring River starts in the Roaring River State Park south of Cassville, Missouri and north of the Arkansas State line. The river only runs about 5 or 6 miles to Eagle Rock and then dumps into Table Rock Lake. Before the Lake was made Roaring River would have dumped into White River and would not have gone on into Arkansas. Berryville, Arkansas is about 23 miles from my house and the river that goes by it is Kings River. Hope this helps. Beverly Sweeney -----Original Message----- From: Roberta L. Hi, Snows, I am hoping to find out more information on the children of Miller Watson SNOW [b. 1832, Surry Co., NC; d. unk.; m. Eliza Ann CORDELL [CAUDILL?] The children that I have located were: (1) Sereptia/Cerepta [S.M.?] SNOW, b. 1848? 1852? She was recorded as 18 years of age in 1870, after which she apparently married, but it is unknown who her husband was. 06-0005 Margaret SNOW b. 1860/61. She apparently was married by 1880, but it is unknown who her husband was. 06-0006 Christopher Columbus SNOW b. 1865/66; m., 1886, Roxie Jane CREED. Children are unknown. 06-0007 Thomas Gideon SNOW b. 1867/68; m., 1888, Nancy Jane CARPENTER. One known child: Electra Lucretia SNOW m. Walter C. SMITH. Looking for other children. 06-0008 Sarah Plutina (Plutonia) SNOW b. 7 May 1869, Surry Co., NC; d. 22 Dec 1913, Surry Co., NC; buried Union Hill Church Cem., Surry Co.; m., at the home of her father, 26 June 1896, Tyre Henderson HARRIS, b. 26 Sept 1867, Laurel Branch, Alleghany? Co., NC; d. 16 May 1959, Thurmond, Surry Co., NC; son of John Calvin HARRIS & Frances "Nancy" SIMMONS. I have the HARRIS side of these lines [back to Tyre's great-grandfather, William HARRIS of Orange/Culpeper Co., VA, and Surry, Wilkes Ashe, Alleghany [and again, Wilkes] Cos., NC. Would like to locate HARRISes belonging to these lines also.] 06-0009 Nancy SNOW b. 1871/72; NFI. 06-0010 Shadrack O. SNOW b. 1872/73. Shadrack registered to vote in Surry Co., NC, on 17 Oct 1902, and stated his father was M.W. Snow. A photograph in my possession appears most probably to have been of Shadrack, identified as with his wife, Frances CALLAWAY [CALLOWAY], and their children. Of the children, two were clearly sons, one clearly a daughter, and a baby that may have been either male or female. Who were the children of Shadrack and Fannie? 06-0011 Vica B. "Vicey" SNOW b. 1876/77; m. Shade -----. Two photographs of Vica are in my possession. The first photograph shows Vicey with her family, and includes two little girls about ages three and four, both with long blonde hair. The second photograph shows Vicey and her husband, about 1915 or so. Shade always had mustache, if these two photographs are accurate indicators. Who was he? Who were their children? Thanks to all, and I hope to hear from some of you! Pam pamstone@digital.net
