    1. [SNOW-L] Jennie Snow & Bartlett Cave
    2. Ray Isbell
    3. In the list of marriages posted on the Snow List Sept. 15, the marriage of Jennie (sic) Snow and Cave Bartlett (sic) is shown as 22 Dec 1797, place not stated. The transcriber shows "John" Snow married "Cave Bartlett," but I'm sure she meant Jennie Snow who married Bartlett Cave. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. 3. Recently a relative climbed Independence Rock in Wyoming along the Oregon Trail. He climbed to the top and there scratched into a rock was the name B. Snow - June 10, 1853. Independence Rock was a landmark about one-third the way along the Oregon Trail. Anyone have a hint on who this Snow might be?

    1. [SNOW-L] Elizabeth Lower Snow
    2. Ray Isbell
    3. For those of you who believe you may descend from John Snow and Elizabeth Lower (Lauer), there is a lot about the Lowers' ancestry of Elizabeth Lower on the internet. She is shown as the daughter of Peter Lower at Charles John Tippet's website below: http://members.home.net/charlestippet/lower003.htm#id3931 However, this is not correct. Peter Lower who was born in 1778 was a contemporary of Elizabeth Lower Snow. Mr. Tippet emailed me: "There was an elder Johann Peter Lower who resided in Orange County, VA (he is also listed on the Tippet web page - the son of John Michael Lower, b. 1715). He was born in 1752 in PA. This was most likely the father of Elizabeth. I don't know if this is a coincidence, but there were quite a few Lowers who migrated to Roane County, TN, that I have not been able to connect into my database. I would guess they may be descendants of Johann Peter Lower of Orange County, VA but this is pure speculation on my part." . John Michael1 Lower was born in Jan 1715. He was baptized on 17 Jan 1715 Hirstein, Saarland, Germany. He married Anna Barbara Frey, daughter of Johann Peter Frey and Anna Barbara Schmidt, on 9 Jun 1741 Moden Creek (now Muddy Creek), Cocalico township, Lancaster, PA. He was buried in Moravian Church Cemetery, Heidelberg township, Berks County, PA. He died on 15 Apr 1789 Berks County, PA at age 74. He was also known as Hans Lauer. He sailed from Rotterdam with his parents aboard the ship "Samuel," Hugh Percy, Master. He immigrated on 30 Aug 1737 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. He lived in Tulpehocken township, Berks County, PA. He was naturalized on 24 Sep 1761 Heidelberg township, Berks, PA. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He lived in 1785 in Heidelberg township, Berks County, PA. Frey-Lower lineage Heinrich Frey (b.1588 Kononau, Kt Zurich, Switzerland), m. Anna Hoen (b.1598, Wadenswil. Kt Zurich, Switzerland). Their son was Gregorius Frey (b.1610), m. Verena Oberdorfer (b.c1616). Their son was Johan Jacob Frey (b.1648), m. Anna Marie Schauben (b.1688). Their son was Johann "Hans" Peter Frey (b.1689 Alsace, FR), m. Anna Barbara Schmidt (b.1696). They came to Pennsylvania and their daughter Anna Barbara Frey married John Michael Lower, also called Hans Lauer. 2. Snow, Donald R.
    3. Thanks, Dutch, but I was afraid that's what you had for Richard's ancestors. Unless you have some proof for it, I don't think it's correct. That's what I sent in to the Ancestral File 10 years ago because I thought it was correct, but then I tried to verify it. I don't think it's correct for several reasons. For one thing, the Richard Snows from Barnstaple, Devon, England (BTW, it's Barnstaple in England, not Barnstable.) were still in Barnstaple in 1642 since they signed the Protestation Rolls there then. So none of them were the Barbados Richard, for sure. And since the English Civil War started in 1642 and no one was leaving England then, our Richard probably left earlier to show up in Woburn in 1645 on the tax list. Also, if you check the birth year of that Barnstaple Richard and the age of the Richard on the ship Expedition to Barbados in 1635, they don't match. Another problem is that the Expedition sailed from Gravesend which is 50 miles east of London. So if our Richard was from Barnstaple, why did he go 150 miles away from Devon in the West Country to sail from Gravesend when there were ships leaving Barnstaple itself? But a more telling problem is that people in those days were naming kids for grandparents and there are no Patricks nor Maries nor any of the other names of the Barnstaple Richard's kids nor ancestors in the Woburn Richard's descendants. The wife's name, Annis Barratt, seems to have come from an assumption that the only person named Annis around Barbados at that time period was an Annis Barratt on the Expedition (or maybe it was another ship about then, I don't remember), so someone jumped to the conclusion that that must have been Richard's wife. In fact, there is even a question about what Richard's wife's name was since in one copy of the will it is clearly Avis, not Annis, and they had a granddaughter named Avis, not Annis. However, until we find their marriage and the birth records of John and James, we can't be sure. Regarding the births of John and James, Woburn wasn't founded until after John and James were born, so I don't know where your date for John's birth came from. Do you have a source? Their third son Daniel is the first birth recorded in the Woburn Town Records. Probably all the info on the family was in the Congregational Church records in Woburn, but those were all burned in a fire in the 1800's. Richard's will states he had 2 Bibles and my guess is that the family info was recorded in at least one of them, but so far they haven't surfaced anywhere. Maybe some descendant has them. I keep hoping that one or both of those Bibles will show up in some manuscript collection somewhere so I keep checking NUCMC (National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections) whenever I can. I was in England for 6 months 10 years ago and tried to find a will or something that mentioned our Richard in America, but had no luck. One possibility now seems to be a Richard Snow from Gloucester since his father was John and in 1642 he was supposed to have been the executor of his father's will, but by 1645 he still hadn't done it and the will just has written on it that he couldn't, but doesn't say why. I wonder if it was because he was in America by then. We need to get that checked out in the County Record Office in Gloucester or Bristol. There's a lot more, but anyway you can see the problems of trying to identify our Richard Snow. 3. Phillip, Thanks for the correction. I take it there were two John Snows about the same age who came to Roane Co., TN. I don't recognize all the names you list as siblings of William Lowery Snow. My John Snow (whom most other researchers identify as the son of Frost) had children Audra, Richard and Nancy who m. Michael Selvidge. This seems reasonable because Audra and Richard were also names of Frost's children.
