    1. [SNOW] SNOW, John / Marion Co., IN / abt 1820
    2. Terri Terry
    3. This is my dead end. I've been stuck here for over 20 years. I am looking for the parents of John Snow, b. abt 1820 and lived his whole life in Perry Twp., Marion Co., IN. He married 1st to Sarah Schoolcraft on 23 Aug 1838. Affidavit given by William Snow. William Snow m. Catherine Snow 10 Oct 1838. IN the 1840 Census, John in found living in Perry Twp., Marion Co., IN next door to (prob. brother)William Snow and a James Snow is living nearby. James is old enough (but just barely) to poss. be the father of John but not of William, also James is later shown by the 1850 census to have a child named William born much later than the William living next door to John. James Snow had m. Elizabeth Johnson in Clark Co., IN in 1816. In 1841, John gave affidavit for the marriage of Mary Snow to James Fansaler. Mary is too old to be a child of John or William. James' oldest dau is of 10 - under 15 in the 1840 census and so is probably not Mary. John married 2nd to widow Nancy (Stevens) Sulgrove 25 Sep 1843 He married 3rd to Rebecca Jane Stevens (Nancy's sister) on 28 Jun 1853. William, John, and James were all b. 1799-1820 with James being born in NC and John and William b. in IN. They may related to Joseph Snow and Benjamin Snow who bought land in Marion Co in 1829. Benjamin Snow (wife Katy Roads) and Joseph Snow were both old enough to be John's father, but not William and James. Also, Benjamin named sons John and William, but according to their decendents, they were not the John and William in the 1840 census. Joseph had sons named William and James who were much too young to be the William and James in the 1840 census. Other related Snows are: Emsley Snow, son of Isaac who m. Catherine Fanceler in 1836, affidavit by Joseph Snow. Emsely and Isaac were of Hamilton Co., while Catherine and Joseph were of Marion Co., IN. Ebenezer Snow who m. Anna Vault 1838 Clark Co., IN Catherine Snow who m. James Schoolcraft 1834 Marion Co IN A Jonathan Snow of Clark Co., IN If anyone has ANY information on any of these Snows, I would appreciate hearing about it. 1. [SNOW] SNOW James 1801 NC TN
    2. Rancher
    3. My brick wall is James Snow born between 1801 and 1804, depending on the Census, in N.C. He is identified as the son of Ebenezer and Sarah/Sally (Wicker) Snow. Thomas Webb the DeKalb County historian made the connection in a report he wrote over 20 years ago. He also though, included Thomas Snow as a son of Ebenezer and Sally Snow. This Thomas Snow Mr. Webb identified as the one who drowned in the Clinch River in 1818. Since that time that Thomas has been identified as belonging to the "other" Snow family. (ie Frost Snow). A land survey for Ebenezer did have a Thomas helping with Solomon in 1814 land survey. So there is most likely a Thomas just not the one who died in 1818. James on the other hand has no documentation except a possible 1850 Census showing a Sarah/Sally Snow living with him. There were two women named Sarah/Sally in different households and the one in James household had a different age than the other. The one in James' household had a date not consistent with Ebenezer's wife's "normally accepted" birth date. Sarah/Sally could have been visiting the two households on the different days of the Census as the homes were near each other. There is no family relationship identified in any 1850 Census so even she was the wife of Ebenezer it is not good documentation. James has land continuity with the William and Susanne (Myers) Snow family, youngest brother to Ebenezer. Also Ebenezer was supposed to of had land in and around the same area but a bit more west. James has land near Solomon Snow. Solomon has an affidavit indicating he is the son of Ebenezer and Sarah/Sally. There is also land dealings with William Snow the first born son of Ebenezer and Sarah/Sally. All the land was in the southwest corner of Morgan County. The land ownership dates from the early 1820's through to 1890 when the last of it was sold. The only two sons of James and Cassie (Case) Snow are named Thomas and Joseph. They left the area in 1890 and 1888 respectively to travel to the Territory of Washington. Could the summation of James being the son of Ebenezer be wrong? Could James belong to the Frost Snow family through an unknown to me Thomas or Joseph? Have I hit my head against this wall so long that I had better change course? What is your brick wall doing to your theories?

    1. [SNOW] Roll Call time
    2. John A Hansen
    3. Dear All: Generally speaking a roll call does not do much for the genealogy of our list. However, once a year seems to be an appropriate timing to dust off those brick walls and see where things stand. I know from the various emails that I receive that many of you have made great strides this year due to new databases on line and new web sites etc. So what I propose is as follows: A: Post the brick wall ancestor and other ancestors that seem to have been created to give you a a hard time. Some ancestors of mine have covered their tracks so well, it must have been deliberate :-) Please use the standard format in the subject line for everyone's benefit. This standard has been used and was created in order to allow many people to skim the subject lines and then determine if there is any interest or should the delete key be used. So one ancestor per message. The format is : SURNAME > location > time Note the surname is in Caps. The new search engines here in Rootsweb are coming on line and are working well. Then give the pertinent details in the message body. B: No signatures lines over 4 lines. The VLF will automatically put anybody on moderate that can't seem to get their sig line down. Large sig lines clog up the search engine and the archives. VLF is a patented system from Piglet (the Listowners admin) and she rents it out for a royalty fee per use. VLF = Very Large Flyswatter to keep posters in line :-) C: Also post any great web sites that you've found that really helped. I may put some of these in the taglines for future reference. Lets Go! Best Regards John A Hansen jahansen@qwest.net List Admin
