    3. Happy Holidays to all, Jan & Joe The following was copied from another book titled HISTORY OF BAXTER COUNTY. Baxter County has been represented in the General Assembly by the following men: Hon. Granville S. Rector was senator through the 1905 and 1907 sessions and Z. M. Horton and Ed Smothers, representatives. Hon. J. A. Watson was senator through the 1909 and 1911 sessions and E. D. Smothers and Thos. H. Henley were Representatives. Hon. W. U. McCabe was elected senator in 1921 and 1923 and E. B. Smothers was representative both terms. Also mentioned in the above named book is the following: Buford was settled by a large number of progressive, thrifty farmers and in 1911 they put on the county's first and one of its best county fairs. "The fair association which was organized with a capital of $5000 divided into 200 shares, had for its directors W. R. Leflet, J. E. Eubank, G. N. Nelson, Dr. J. A. Hipp, H.N. Campbell, E. D. Smothers, W. A. Hopper, Lawrence Knight, H. L. Stiner, all of Buford, E. J. Loop of Cotter, Robert Russell of Mountain Home and J. D. Friend of Norfork. There was a finestock, poultry and fruit exhibit as well as exhibits in handicrafts and other things common to county fairs. A half-mile track for speed driving (horse and carriage) contests and a large club house was built. (It is interesting to note that E.M. Smothers at that time 76 years of age, was the oldest settler present, Having come to the county in 1853.)"
