I am unfamiliar with the first mentioned Smothers clan from Ohio. The Smothers (& others) who in 1812 left Salem Baptist Church, based in now Allen Co., KY, at Trammel Creek, which is on/near the Tennessee line, I am familiar with. They formed the Testament Baptist Church in what was then Sumner Co., TN, and I think is now Macon Co., TN. Surving Sumner Co., TN, court records, voter lists, tax lists, church records, etc., indicate William Smothers arrived in Sumner Co. about 1796. His wife seems to have been named Nancy, and she apparently was a known midwife in the region circa 1810. William seems to have been a part of the clan of Thomas Smothers (m Susannah Gilliam) of Orange Co., NC, whose descendants moved to Sumner/Smith Co., TN, in the 1796 to 1820 time frame. They later dipersed to other parts of Tennessee, southern Illinois, and Arkansas, circa 1820-1860. William & Nancy Smothers are likely candidates for the parents of Elish M. Smothers, b 1800 TN.
