Smothers' father was probably named John, and that is what I (tentatively) have put down in my own file. Other researchers, however, have John R. listed as the son of Thomas Smothers and Susannah Gilliam (I have never seen any records that prove this). Thomas Smothers did have a son named John, per the Thomas Smothers will, but I believe that John Smothers son of Thomas is the same as John Smothers Sr. in the Davidson Co. voters list and is the father of John R. Smothers John R. Smothers seems to have been living for a while in Sumner Co., TN abt 1820 -- or to put it another way, there is a John Smothers in the 1820 Census, Sumner Co., TN, whose children seem to consist of seven daughters and one son, which is a good fit for John R. Smothers' known family at that time. Land poll/tax records from 1813 Sumner Co., TN, also specifically name a "John Smothers son of John," which might be John R. Smothers.
