Notes from James Smithers, Miamisburg, Ohio. The first Smithers that we know of this time is Andrew Smothers/Smithers from the city of Abingdon, county of Washington in the state of Virginia. It is said that Andrew and Sarah were born and married in England. I was in Abindon, county of Washington in the state of Virginia in July, 1996. I copied an indenture between Andrew Smithers and his wife Sarah and Edward and Agnes Farris for a parcel of land Containing two hundred sixty acres lying and being in the county of Washington, a branch of the middle fork of the Holstein River. Andrew paid 90 pounds the current money of Virginia. The date was May 1, 1793. On November 23, 1793 Andrew and wife Sarah sold to a William Reagan the above same land for 150 pounds ocated on a branch of the middle fork of the Holstein River. I would say that he was a shewrd business man. They must have left shortly after this event because he shows up in Bath County, Ky. in the early 1800's. Andrew Smithers/Smothers wrote a will in Bath County, Ky., dated Sep. 4, 1824. In his will he states that his wife Elizabeth should have 50 acres of land, as long as she lives a single life. If she remarries, she is only to have her third of the place, and at her death it is to return to his children. He also leaves his wife one third part of all his personal estate. The balance of hs estate was to be divided amongst his children equally, that is to say Thomas Smathers, Joseph Smathers, Ann Jackson, Martha Fowler, Margaret Bristo, Sally Hopkins, Hugh Smathers, and he leaves to John Smathers, Elizabeth Fuget and Susanna Gipson, one dollar each. He appoints John McNabb as his Executor in his last will and statement. Given under my hand this 4th day of September, 1824. Names taken from will of Andrew Smothers filed 1824 Bath county, Ky. Kentucky Genelogist Vol. 11 #4. In May of 1827, his will was produced and proven to be Andrew Smither's last will and testament.
