U.S.N. SAILORS BURIED ON MENORCA ISLAND, SPAIN (1818-1870) by Richard Caville [email protected] Portsmouth, U.K. I have just returned from holiday in Spain where I discovered a cemetery with United States Navy sailors from the early 19th century. The following ships and names are on inscriptions and graves on the shore of Mahon Harbour, accessible only by foot along the shore or from the sea. SHIPS: USS Delaware, Cumberland, Java, frigate Congress, Constitution; North Carolina NAMES: Robert ALBERGER, John BROWN, Henry BUTLER, Joseph COOPER, John CROFT (NYC), Edward ELTON, Adam GILLIS (Native of Ireland), David HORTON, Silas HOWARD, Mary Griffith HUNTER (wife of sailor), Lester JOHNSON, Henry JONES, John LANDSLEY, James M. LEE, Samuel MORTON, William MULLOY, John Smith PATTERSON, Jacob SHANE, Thomas SMOTHERS (Salem, Mass.), Benjamin ZELL (Philadelphia). Some have further inscriptions as to how they died, some only have a date and ship. Several slate tablets with inscriptions are broken and partially missing. For more details contact [email protected] If you are a naval historian, I also would like to know more about the ships and why they were in the Mediterranean during those years.
