I am looking for any information about JACOB SMOTHERS, who was given a land grant, about 1823/26 in what is now Carroll Co. TN. OR if any one on the list has a Jacob Smothers, in that time line. Please give me some feed back. Thanks Jan & Joe Smothers

I have your Jacob Smothers in my files, I believe. He was born abt 1789 in NC and had at least one wife named Nancy_____. Census record suggest Jacob was living in Sumner Co., TN, in 1820, and then was in Carroll Co., TN, up until at least 1850. In old age, 1860, he was living in Franklin Co., IL. I was not aware of the land grant you mentioned, but it seems to fit well with the census records for Jacob. Jacob possibly had brothers named Elisha M. Smothers and John Smothers, who were living near him in Carroll Co., TN. I have no proof that Jacob, Elisha, and John were siblings, but that seems to be the correct explanation. Jacobs father is much more of a guess -- it is likely he is related to the Thomas Smothers (m Susannah Gilliam) clan from Orange Co., NC, whose descendants settled in the area of Sumner/Smith Co., TN, are around 1796-1820.
