However, there was a James Smithers, born in England who was a gunsmith and engraver. He married Rachel Betterton in September of 1771. He did border cuts on the 1772 release of Pennsylvania currency, he completed the engraving of the Pennsylvania survery of the Mason Dixon line map, and made the dies for the Pitt Tokens that were minted in commeration of the repeal of the Stamp Act, as well as other items of the day. Unfortunately, he was a Tory sympathizer and convicted of high treason. He fled to New York and supposedly went to Canada. However, I do remember that his wife Rachel appeared before the Supreme Executive Council of Philadelphia to request a pardon for him. Whether she was successful or not, I don't know. If she was, this is possibly him listed in the 1790 census. Not sure what became of mom(Catherine). Proof is the following record:Because BOTH the 1755 Md deed AND the 1763 De deed name Nath'l Smithers and John & wife Rachel Smithers, there is no doubt the Md and De families connect (in my opinion). -1778 List of Men From Pennsylvania who joined the British Army. This was when I was first researching Smithers/Smathers and I thought it was interesting but important to my research . I may have made a notation on a scratch of paper but not sure exactly where that would be - sorry. Next time I go to Hayes Presidential Center Library I will look it up again. Also speaking of Hayes Presidential Center, they maintain an Online Obituary Index that includes both Sandusky and Seneca County Ohio. Some Smothers folks I believe have passed through that area and might found it useful. They are still indexing Seneca County, but it might be something worth keeping in mind.
