To go back to the details screen, simply close the Shopping Cart window by clicking on “X” in the upper right hand corner or by hitting alt/tab simultaneously to return to the detail page. You will not lose your order. It will stay in the shopping cart for up to two weeks until you have completed the check out process (the cart uses cookies to store this information). Mail with check made out to “Hayes Presidential Center” for amount - (number of obits x $2.50) Obits on Web Hayes Presidential Center Spiegel Grove Fremont, OH 43420 We will mail you the copies of the obits as soon as we can get to them. The turnaround time will depend on the amount of traffic this web service generates. We will attempt to complete your request within a week of receipt of your check. Tips: It is possible to send you digital versions of the obits via e-mail instead of a paper copy, but we cannot troubleshoot each e-mail transaction. If you or your system are not comfortable with importing large tif or jpeg files, then it is not the easiest method to receive the obits. If you would like to have your obit emailed, please make a note in the Comments box near the end of the online shopping cart form or contact us via email hayeslib@rbhayes.org. The fee is the same whether it is mailed or emailed. Besides obituaries, a variety of other sources have been indexed into this database. Examples of these other sources are probate case files, funeral home records, society membership records, biographical files, brief references in history books, etc. Because these sources can range from one page to fifty or more, we cannot set a standard fee for copying them. Contact the library staff (419-332-2081 or hayeslib@rbhayes.org) to find out what is available on your individual. Our research fee for this material is $12.50 an hour plus photocopying costs. Of course, it is always possible for the researcher to visit the Hayes Library in person. Admission to the Library is always free. Copies of the obituaries here are only $.25 each since you do the look-ups! 1. [SMOTHERS] ~~~1902~~~
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. ~~~1902~~~ The year is 1902 ... one hundred years ago ... what a difference a century makes! Here are some of the U.S. statistics for 1902:        The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years.        Only 14 Percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.        Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.        A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost #11.00    There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads.        The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.        Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st-most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.        The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents an hour.        The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year.        A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.        More than 95% of all births in the U.S. took place at home.      Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."        Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.        Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.        Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.        The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were:    1. Pneumonia and influenza    2. Tuberculosis    3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease    5. Stroke       The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.       The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30.       Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented.       There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.       One in ten U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated high school.        Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."        18 percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time servant or domestic.        There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.        Just think what its already like in the last 100 years. What will it be like in our children's generation & our grandchildren's in 100 years?    ~~~......It boggles the mind.....~~~ _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? 1. Re: [SMOTHERS] Smither [s] in 1790 census
    2. Nena, The Smithers shown in the 1790 census of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania are George Jacob Smithers and George Nicholas Smithers, sons of William Smithers who died in 1760 in Albany Twp. of Berks County, Pennsylvania. Both Jacob and George served in the Northampton militia (Jacob a Private, and George a Captain) and used depreciation pay to purchase land in 1786 in what was then Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, but later that same year was designated as part of the newly created Luzerne County. Jacob Jr is the eldest son of George Jacob Smithers, whose sponsors at baptism in 1765 were Jacob Bachman Sr. and Maria Catherine. (Jacob Bachman Sr. was Maria Catherine Jeaky Smither's second husband.) Jacob stayed in Luzerne County and died there in 1826, but George and his family went on to move to Fairfield County, Ohio where he died around 1825. I am not certain who James Smithers the engraver is in Philadelphia. However, there was a James Smithers, born in England who was a gunsmith and engraver. He married Rachel Betterton in September of 1771. He did border cuts on the 1772 release of Pennsylvania currency, he completed the engraving of the Pennsylvania survery of the Mason Dixon line map, and made the dies for the Pitt Tokens that were minted in commeration of the repeal of the Stamp Act, as well as other items of the day. Unfortunately, he was a Tory sympathizer and convicted of high treason. He fled to New York and supposedly went to Canada. However, I do remember that his wife Rachel appeared before the Supreme Executive Council of Philadelphia to request a pardon for him. Whether she was successful or not, I don't know. If she was, this is possibly him listed in the 1790 census. Terry Snyder

    3. EXPLANATION OF COLUMNS- Name of family head; number of free white males of sixteen years and older, number of free white males under sixteen years, number of free white females, number of all other free persons, number of slaves; and sometimes town or district of residence. The 1790 census instructed the marshals to identify, by age brackets, free white males sixteen years of age or older and those under sixteen. It was designed to determine the country’s industrial and military capabilities. Additionally, the first census was to count the number of free white females; all other free persons regardless of race or gender; and slaves. 1. [SMOTHERS] [INDIANA] House Bill 1540 - Birth and Death Records
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. From: Darburns@aol.com Reply-To: INDIANA-L@rootsweb.com To: INDIANA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [INDIANA] House Bill 1540 - Birth and Death Records Date: Sun, 2 Feb 2003 18:48:19 EST There is proposed legislation to prohibit public access to vital records for the state of Indiana! House Bill (HB) 1540 can be read online at <A HREF="http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2003/IN/IN1540.1.html"> http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2003/IN/IN1540.1.html</A> Some of the language in HB 1540 is: "h. When one hundred (100) years has elapsed after the date of birth, the records of those events in the custody of the state or local registrar shall become available to the public....." There is much more to read concerning HB 1540. Have I gotten your attention yet? I sure hope so and I hope that each and every one of us contacts our legislators about this. We've got to contact our legistatures immediately telling them of our opposition regarding HB 1540 as genealogists and family historians. Please read on: In this morning's Indianapolis Star in Section B City & State on page 3,House Bill 1540 is listed for Hearing on Wednesday morning at 10:30 from the Public Health Committee. Our emails and phone calls to legislators will need to start immediately with follow up letters in the mail on Monday!  Express your opposition to proposed HB 1540 adopting new privacy standards for Indiana's public vital records! Even if you live outside the state of Indiana you may be affected by this HB. This applies to all of us - If we, at some point, wish to become a member of an organization that requires us to prove our lineage and HB 1540 becomes a law we will not have access to birth or death records to do this. Our desire to become a members of any organization that requires us to prove our lineage may be in jeopardy! Please contact the persons that have authored this proposed legislature. The site where you can find email address for IN Representatives is <A HREF="http://www.in.gov/cgi-in/legislative/contact/contact.pl">http://www.in.gov/cgi-bin/legislative/contact/contact.pl</A> We are all concerned about identity theft. The state of Indiana requires information from us that should safeguard the issues of theft identity. Please contact your representatives by email, phone and follow-up with a letter. 1. [SMOTHERS] Smothers in Md/Pa 1887-1890
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Baltimore, Maryland Directories, 1890 34 Matches Description:The largest city in Maryland, Baltimore is situated on Chesapeake Bay in the central section of the state. This database is a transcription of a city directory originally published in 1890. In addition to providing the resident's name, it provides information regarding their address and occupation. This collection includes the names of about 165,600 people, mostly heads of households. For those seeking ancestors from central Maryland, this can be an informative database. Extended Description:City directories are primarily useful for locating people in a particular place and time. They can tell you generally where an ancestor lived and give an exact location for census years. They are also useful for linkage with sources other than censuses. There are usually several parts to a city directory. The section of most interest to the genealogist, of course, is the alphabetical listing fo names, for it is there that you may find your ancestor. Whenever you use a directory, however, it is important to refer to the page showing abbreviations used in the alphabetical section of the directory, usually following the name in each entry. Some abbreviations are quite common, such as h for home or r, indicating residence. There may even be a subtle distinction between r for residents who are related to the homeowner and b for boarders who are not related. Some city directories list adult children who lived with their parents but were working or going to school. Look for persons of the same surname residing at the same address. If analyzed and interpreted properly, these annual directories can tell you (by implication) which children belong to which household, when they married and started families of their own, and when they established themselves in business. In cases where specific occupation is given, you can search records pertinent to that occupation. Once an ancestor has been found in a city directory, there are several ways the information can be used to gain access to, or link with, such sources as censuses, death and probate records, church records, naturalization records, and land records. Taken from Chapter 11: Research in Directories, The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy by Gordon Lewis Remington; edited by Loretto Dennis Szucs and Sandra Hargreaves Luebking (Salt Lake City, UT: Ancestry Incorporated, 1997). If you are going to post something that is not genealogy related, it's helpful to indicate that as such. I hope your brother continues to recover and same for Ron. 1. [SMOTHERS] A Soldier@ Valley Forge
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. [just thought this would give us an idea of what our ancestors were enduring during those times....send to me fr dear Smothers pal, Nena] A Soldier The following passage is from a sermon by John Hagee: I want you to close your eyes and picture in your mind the soldier at Valley Forge, as he holds his musket in his bloody hands. He stands barefoot in the snow, starved from lack of food, wounded from months of battle and emotionally scarred from the eternity away from his family surrounded by nothing but death and carnage of war. He stands though, with fire in his eyes and victory on his breath. He looks at us now in anger and disgust and tells us this... I gave you a birthright of freedom born in the Constitution and now your children graduate too illiterate to read it. I fought in the snow barefoot to give you the freedom to vote and you stay at home because it rains. I left my family destitute to give you the freedom of speech and you remain silent on critical issues, because it might be bad for business. I orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and it has stolen democracy from the people. It's the soldier not the reporter who gives you the freedom of the press. It's the soldier not the poet who gives you the freedom of speech. It's the soldier not the campus organizer who allows you to demonstrate. It's the soldier who salutes the flag, serves the flag, whose coffin is draped with the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag. "Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen." Prayer Wheel: When you receive this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our U.S. ground troops in Afghanistan, AND all over this world. There is nothing attached.... This can be very powerful. Just send this to all the people in your address book. Do not stop the wheel, please. Of all the gifts you could give a US Soldier, Prayer is the very best one. A Soldier [I just had an email fr a Tx friend that says if US goes to war, everyone fr 12-60 could be called up!] _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus

Will get a 4-5 wk break after chemo and radiation before doing the surgery to remove the tumor and 4" my esophagus and 1/3 of my stomach. Hopefully all cancer will be dead and will not reoccur. That's the latest.Love ya, Chip _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? 1. [SMOTHERS] Bath Co site
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. From: "Darrell Warner" <darrellwarner@kc.rr.com> To: KYBATH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [KYBATH] Website Important Please Read! Date: Fri, 24 Jan 2003 18:10:13 -0600 After getting everything figured out the final opening page of the Bath County Site will be http://www.rootsweb.com/~kybath/bathcounty.html There was some confusing e-mail sent to me along with a bit of ignorance from me. (Mostly working on this at 2 am) The above website ....... I promise....... will not change and you are safe to book mark it. Thanks for the interst in the surname registry. I have recieved many names and it is looking so good and I have recieved many positive comments about it. http://rootsweb.com/~kybath/surnames-registry.html If you haven't sent yours in please do so. Remeber this is our site I just do the work. Please feel free to suggest anything that may make this site better!!!!!!! I have added a new page to the website. It has to do with vital records. You will find it at http://rootsweb.com/~kybath/vital_records_information.html I know I am always using the sites I have listed. If there are other sites that you use and you think it would be helpful to others please let me know what they are so I can add them in. Please e-mail me and let me know what you think about the vital records page. As for me.... yes I may be a bit excited and going a bit overboard on our site but I see something that all of us can grow into something special. I have been looking at a lot of the other Kentucky county sites and I really would like to see us the best county site of all. As you will notice I don't use a lot of frills on the page. I try to keep it simple to load and easy to understand. Just a short story here that may make your skin crawl. I went to a psycic (spelling) fair with a lady friend of mine last week and sat down in a booth to have a reading. I think I freaked the lady out. Her face got real serious and finally she came out with what here feelings were. Quote: I have never met anyone that is surrounded by death the way that you are. Don't be alarmed but death surrounds you. I don't understand but it appears that there are many folks that have past over that watch over you. I told her that I spend at least an hour of every day dealing with people that have died. I told her that I am a Geanealogist. After explaining what a geanealogist was she sat back with an odd look on her face. To make this story short..... I am not sure who was more taken back by this. Her or me!!!!! Maybe what we do is noticed by our ancestors that have gone before us. Maybe it is all a buch of bunk. I will let you decide for yourself. As for me.......you ha!d to be there......Take care and be well,>Darrell _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus

    2. Janet Greentree
    3. Hi, Daniel and Angelina are my great-grandparents. The name Daniel's brother is Orin not Arin. He and his brother Charles died very close together from the black something my mother said. They lived in the Gahanna area of Ohio. Daniel Smithers/Smothers - Laura Smothers Baker, Esther Baker Schrader, Janet Schrader Greentree They changed the name from Smithers to Smothers because they thought it sounded better or at least that is the story that was passed down. Daniel was in the Civil War with the 18th U.S. with the Army of the Ohio and was wounded several times. He was a Sergeant, hurt his back on the way to Tennessee, and was sent back to Ohio to recuperate. His daugther married William Baker, son of George Baker, a Confederate, who was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio after being captured in Woodstock, VA. Janet
