    1. [SMOTHERS] Jessie Smothers/Phelps.....??
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. anyone know this family?....Nena cwo2usn@aol.com My husband's great grandmother was Jessie Smothers she married Ward Phelps. I noticed that there are three different postings for George Jacob Smithers and George Nicholaus Smithers - they have the same parents & wife listed with them so they must be the same person. It gets even more confusing further back. I was just wondering what you thought was correct.Hope to hear from you! 1. [SMOTHERS] 1850, 1851 Census for Blendon Township, Franklin County, Ohio
    2. Noah Smothers
    3. 1850 U. S. Census for Blendon Twp, Franklin County, Ohio. The 1850 and 1851 census for Blendon Township, Franklin County, Ohio, have the following Heads of Households: I have not seen the census images for the following, and they are not available on Ancestry.com, can someone enlighten me about them? 1850 Abagail Smothers 1851 Abagail Smothers 1850 Elias Smothers 1851 Elias Smothers 1850 George Smothers 1851 George Smothers 1850 Henry Smothers 1851 Henry Smothers 1850 Julia Smothers 1851 Julia Smothers 1850 William Smothers 1851 William Smothers There is an Elias Smothers who married Abagail Bennett, I thought at first that Abagail Smothers, might be the widow of Elias, however he died after these census in 1882. George Smothers I assume is George William Smothers born bet 1760-1770, wife Lois Adams, I have George died abt. 1852. Henry Smothers born 1812, son of George William Smothers and Lois Adams, spouse Elizabeth Birdsell. Julia Smothers ?, I have a Julia E. Smothers, daughter of Nathan Beach Smothers, and Mariah Jane Slack, however she was born abt 1847, I think the Julia in the census must be older than this Julia. William Smothers, is this William B. Smothers, born 1826, son of George William Smothers and Lois Adams? There is a John Smothers, age 38, (born abt 1812), wife Catherine, age 35, Catherine age 18, John age 15, Henry age 13, Alexander age 11, Jane age 5/12. This family is also in Franklin County, but in Montgomery Township, both in 1850 and 1851. There are several more people in this same household; Josah Grimes age 28, Mary Ann Grimes, age 26, Rebecca Jane Grimes age 9, Harriet M. Evans age 15, Jane Evans age 13, and Martha Evans age 7. Any help appreciated. Noah

    3. Tennessee Online adds new section to popular Internet site KNOXVILLE Tennessee Online is pleased to announce a new feature segment to the web site called "Tennessee History Classroom." This section of tennesseehistory.com features in chronological order - by era - the stories of the noted men and women who founded and help settle what would become the state of Tennessee and those individuals who would rise to national prominence. In addition, it also features stories on famous events in the states colorful past. Knoxville broadcaster and journalist Ed Hooper - the creator and producer of Tennessee Online authored the stories featured in the classroom section to help in answering questions received from visitors to the site and as an aide to teachers requesting more classroom material on the states history and heritage. The Internet site currently handles more than 300 e-mails daily from students, teachers and scholars studying Tennessee history and this should enable us to focus more on speeding up our reply time to the growing number of public and private schools utilizing the site across the South. More features will be added in the future and current stories updated as more information comes available of the events and subjects in the segment through archaeological studies and further research by scholars. The section is broken down into three sections to make navigation of the site easier for students and teachers. At the end of most feature stories, is a section dedicated to updates and source materials for students and teachers of Tennessee history who wish to read more about the individual or events documented from other sources. At the request of school administrators, photographs of the individuals will remain in the Tennessee Trivia section of the site to prevent classroom assignment problems. We hope you enjoy the new segment and welcome responsible comments. 1. [SMOTHERS] *Off topic* update on my brother
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. So many have asked me abt my brother, thought this the best way to answer. If you recall he did the DNA back in Nov and will be one of the TX Smothers we will be matching against when the Smothers Project results come in. He is 2 yrs younger than me [I am 60y next month]...and just recovering fr heart attack abt 9 wks ago. He lives west of me here in WA abt 150mi close to Wenatchee. He has been md 35+y and has 2 grown children and 5 grandchildren. He and & are the last of our generation in our family [well, we do have a half sister that lives in Tx which he has never seen and she was 9mos old when our father died and was last time I saw her-she is md with 2 sons & is almost 34y]. I recently had word from Ron Prudhomme in Florida and his surgery went well [he also has cancer] and on the mend. Prayers are asked for all. Thanks for your kindness and patience, Nena Hi, Sis.>Sorry I haven't been in touch. Had a really rought last week and first part of this week. Chemo just knocked the hell out of me. Really sick. But, chemo now over for two weeks, and am rejuvenating. Starting to feel good again and eating again. Didn't eat all last week but absolute minimum. Lost about 20 pounds. Now down to about 170. Haven't weight that much since my logging days back in the 1970s. But, am beginning to feel good again. Next round of chemo starts the 24th. Doc says maybe won't have to have the one big shot that made me so sick this time. Fear is if get too sick again, won't be able to recover in time for the surgery. Want me strong for the surgery. I wouldn't wish this on any person alive. Still have all my hair. Am starting to feel good again and have my appetite back. Getting exercise again. Working outside in the sunshine in the yard cleaning winter's leavings and getting ready for Spring. All for now. 1. [SMOTHERS] DNA & Gene Pool proving ancestoral paths
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. [there's an interesting discussion ongoing on a Melungeon list I am on and thought I might share some of the comments. Interestingly, this first comment I believe also relates back to a book I once read and mentioned, 7 Daughter's of Eve, abt the mtDNA that passes from only a mother to both sexes of her children....the originally gene pool of EVe oddly began in YES....AFRICA! I still suggest a must read book and its not that technical that anyone can read it and really enjoy it. And if any female wants to find out what dau of Eve they descent from, Oxford Ancestors do have the DNA kit, which BTW, I am going to do out of curiousity....and for whats it worth, I believe that DNA and the gene pool is going to give heavy insight into where our ancestors we research came from, why and why and where they settled.] Fr DM-"There was a program on Public TV a couple of weeks ago about that same subject. [Africa & Dr Parfit] The name of the program was "The Journey of man." The two are probably connected to the same research. It traced the movement of the gene pool from Africa to the rest of the world. A interesting point was that the oldest genes he could find was a tribe in Africa. He took samples of the DNA from that tribe and went looking for markers that matched other gene pools. He found that the first migrants from Africa went to Australia, passing right through India on their way. It is a mystery why they didn't stop in India first, but the markers show that they passed right through without stopping. It took some doing to figure out how they got to Australia. After settling in Australia they migrated back to India and settled that part of the world. Next he found that the gene pool moved to the mid east. From there it went first to China then to Europe. He also traced it across Siberia and into America. In effect his theory is that the mid east gene pool was the hub after it moved out of Africa, and except for the group in Australia, all other groups can be traced back to there." Fr D-"An interesting study was done in Africa by Professor Tudor Parfit. There had been a legend among a tribe of southern africans (Zimbabwe) that they were Jews. History had neglected this and many didn't believe it. He undertook genetic testing to prove or disprove their allegation. He did testing of the men looking at the Y chromosome for comparison to Askenazi Jews (European) and Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews. Basically he was looking for the Kohanim connection. And he found it. What he found out through talking to the elders of the tribe that there was legend that men had come from the east and had settled there and intermarried with the Africans. Professor Parfit was able to trace the trade route they spoke of from Yemen to South Africa. This tribe is called the Limba. Interestingly enough through some reading in a book written a few years ago by a white man that traced the lineage of his white family back to the black slaves they had owned, in other words intermarriage (a polite term used here). In the glossary I found that some of the slaves had come from the Limba tribe, in other words Jews. I believe this plantation and slave owners were either in Virginia or the Carolina's. The other so called lost tribes include the Jews of India and China, and other diverse areas of Africa not considered Northern Africa such as Yemen, Morocco, Tunisia, Eygypt etc. There are many sects of Judaism in Israel, those that survive from biblical times are the Samaritans and the Kaorites. At some point probably long before the time of Christ the Samaritans split off from the mainstream of Judaism the same as the Essenes and other sects. The Kaorites are descendents of Iranian Jews that rejected the idea that the Talmud was sacred. Anyway my two cents worth on lost tribes. I met professor Parfit at a lecture in SF. He was going back to S. Africa to do more DNA testing and wanted volunteers to assist. I had just spent most of my money travelling Israel and didn't have the time or finance to do another trip of that magnitude, but believe me it had me so excited." Fr B-"the age old barrier of race prevented people from taken them seriously, there is still an inability among the Askenazi to embrace Jews of color. The other barrier was of course geography. The trade route taken from Senna was long forgotten and actually no one believed anyone sailed so far. And the final thing was if you recall the Lemba (limba) told a story about the men having "clouds" on their heads, Turbans! I have learned to be a better listener the truth is out there. (X files). LOL Enjoy B "a case in point where oral history with time did prove out. And yet, the Lemba have been saying for 2500 years where they were from--including the name Senna as I recall--and also other "tip offs" such as Judaic practices. It took all this time for verification, but all the signs were always there.D." Fr D-" Oh yes, very interesting. I've been reading quite a bit on DNA, especially as it deals with Jewish ethnicities and/or cultures, and I believe there is yet so much that will be better defined as scientists perfect their knowledge. Thanks for letting me know Lemba/Limba is spelled both ways. I, myself, noticed I lumped Yemen with North Africa and don't think that's completely proper. 1. [SMOTHERS] Did Blacks fight in the Rev War, War of 1812 & Civil War?
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Souce: MSN News Feb 12 2003 Could Blacks Fight in the Am Rev, War of 1812 and Civil War? Although their lives were circumscribed by numerous discriminatory laws even in the colonial period, freed African-Americans, especially in the North, were active participants in American society. Black men enlisted as soldiers and fought in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Pine Ridge Agency, S. D. trooper, Buffalo Soldier Corporal / C. G. Morledge. The 9th and 10th Cavalries were nicknamed the "Buffalo Soldiers" by Cheyenne and Comanche Indians who saw a similarity between the troopers’ hair and buffalo fur. These black soldiers were charged with carrying out orders to clear the way for whites as they headed West. Until the early 1890s, African-Americans constituted 20 percent of all cavalry forces on the American frontier. The 54th Massachusetts Infantry was a volunteer group of African-Americans who fought during the Civil War. The unit was made up of former slaves from throughout the North. The regiment was one of the first black units organized in the northern states. Abraham Lincoln's election led to secession and secession to war. When the Union soldiers entered the South, thousands of African-Americans fled from their owners to Union camps. The Union officers did not know how to manage this addition to their numbers. Some sought to return the slaves to their owners, but others kept the blacks within their lines and dubbed them "contraband of war." Many "contrabands" greatly aided the war effort. After Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which was effective Jan. 1, 1863, black soldiers were officially allowed to participate in the war. Over 180,000 African-Americans eventually served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Of these, more than 33,000 died. The Library of Congress holds histories and pictures of most of the regiments of the United States Colored Troops as well as manuscripts and published accounts by African-American soldiers and their white officers. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus

Isn't Tom Thomas Randall, thought I had his chart here somewhere, Nena Someone did wonder why only males for DNA.....its bec the Y Chromosome is the only one that is passed down fr father to son.....etc....this is how a Common Ancestor [male] is located within a span of 14.8 generation on the 12/12 marker DNA test. Now if a female wants to find out what 7 Dau's of EVE she and say, her cuz, are from....they can do the mtDNA test. Female DNA is passed to both sexes of children fr the mother. I think its an ole tale that use to say if one wanted to find out if a child was really so and so's child, then test the father..well, children also can have same blood type as mother. Oddly, all 4 of my children have my blood type 0 positive, which is rather common anyway. nena Family tree does have more info on the DNA Y chromosome http://www.familytreedna.com From: smomom@webtv.net (lucille smothers) To: smothersnena@hotmail.com (Nena Smothers) Subject: Re: *Smothers DNA Project 2003 Update* Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 14:13:22 -0700 (MST) Tom and Dick Smothers are coming to our Sundome March 3rd.....Barbara and Mark were chatting wth them at a restaurant recently......and they E-Mail back and forth. Offer is still open for any male Smothers/Smither [s]/Smeathers/Smetters/Smithey/Smythers to join in on the Project. There is no time limit and we hope this to be an ongoing project. The cost is $99. each and just a simple cheek swab. All samples but two are now back to the DNA Family tree site in Houston. We are probably looking at sometime in March for the results to come back fr the Univ of Arizona. Thanks to all our participants. This will be an exciting journey. I have placed the participants into 6 various groups acc/to Lines. Bascially we have a PA group with 5 in it; we have 1 NC line; we have 1 VA/KY line; 1 KY line; 1 TN line & 2 TX lines. Course, this could certainly change with the results, but I made up the groups acc/to where the Last Known Ancestor was born. 1. [SMOTHERS] SB 818 - Destruction of Wills -- comment
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. To: del_Kilgore@House.state.va.us Subject: SB 818 - Destruction of Wills -- comment Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 20:28:13 -0500 Ladies and Gentlemen, I am writing in opposition to SB 818, Destruction of Wills, in its present version -- which is currently before your Civil Law subcommittee. While the creation of electronic records is a desirable process to improve the long-term recordkeeping of the state Archives, there is a tremendous RISK of undesired effects from this legislation. The major risks from this process are: 1) archival copies may not be complete; 2) archival copies may be improperly labelled, indexed, or categorized; 3) newer storage technologies may offer improvements in quality or detail that would be unrealizable with only an archive copy. By far, the largest risk is the poor quality of MUCH of the microfilming and digitizing that has occurred in the past. Many archival copies are of such poor quality that the basic information contained in those documents is rendered illegible in low-resolution copies. Please, if you doubt that poor-quality copies are common, please browse the Library of Virginia archives... http://image.vtls.com/ Remember, this is the work of the State Archives, and we typically see less attention to detail at the county and city level. I would like to suggest that the bill be amended, to ensure that no materials may be destroyed until acceptable quality of the archived copies is verified by an independent reviewer (or personnel with the State Archives) (or similar restriction). This would still allow for compact storage of materials, but would protect against the inadvertent loss of information content due to copying, lighting, etc errors. In an improved version, the reviewer could also confirm the adequacy of indexing, etc activities at the same time. This protection would help to mitigate the risks identified in sections 1 and 2 above. Section 3 cannot be predicted but can be minimized through appropriate archival processes as identified by the Library of Congress, State Archives, or other competent technical authority. I would also like to suggest that the documents could be offered to interested parties prior to destruction via a Web site or similar notification. There are also several nonprofit programs (such as USGenWeb, http://www.usgenweb.org/ that would work to preserve the records. Why am I concerned? My ancestors were Virginia natives, although I was born and raised in Texas, had they not come from Virginia to Texas, I would not be here today! My ancestoral families lived in Virginia for more than 250 years no doubt. Destruction of these records will create insurmountable barriers, as I weave my way through family history to be stopped by a poor quality copy. It has been suggested that HALF the people in the United States can trace their ancestry through Virginia. The potential impact is huge -- please make the right decision! It's for real and I'm amazed. Everything below is what was sent. Thought everyone should know. Randy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "VIRGINIA SENATE BILL 818-E2-80-94-DESTRUCTION OF WILL FILES. January 31, 2003 Virginia Senate Bill 818 Destruction of will files. Allows the clerk to destroy a will's file along with the original will after it is no longer of any value and after it has been microfilmed. Has been reported out of committee. Senator Thomas K. Norment, Jr. of Williamsburg is the only patron. I found it on the internet at the Virginia General Assembly web site. The description of the Bill reads as follows: "Destruction of will files. Allows the clerk to destroy a will's file along with the original will after 5 years have passed since probate or recordation and allows destruction of originals of instruments which have been recorded and remained unretrieved by the recording party after 6 months, if the documents are no longer of any value and have been microfilmed." Go to http://legis.state.va.us/ Virginia General Assembly and type "SB818" (without quotes)in the search box at the top right. You'll get the description and status. This is the web site for the VA General Assembly, http://www.alz-nca.org/vapolicy/assembly.asp I recommend each and every member be contacted and I suggest we all take an active interest and pass this on to other lists and county web pages to start a grass roots effort to stop this senseless destruction of our history. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I just checked out the status of the Senate Bill 818 at this site. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?ses=031&typ=bil&val=sb818&Submit Go The Senate passed the bill with a 40 - 0 vote and has sent the bill on to the House. I recommend those of us who object to this should send our letters and emails immediately. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Someone just emailed me with this question: Is our history really destroyed, as long as the records have been microfilmed? This is maybe an even better way of keeping records safe, don't you think? My reply: No, not at all. I have seen microfilmed records with a hand over part of the information, where the page was partially folded therefore covering information, a bent card with a permanent crease that destroyed part of the information or so scratched that it was impossible to read the document. To add my two cents worth, what about the person who does not really know how to microfilm a record and either copies it as too dark or too light and it is unreadable? Or copies only part of the record? This fall I drove from TX to NC to get a copy of a will only to find that whoever copied it make a very dark copy and it could not be read as it was. It was not until I reversed the darkness that I was able to get a partial copy. This will was written in 1689---who would want to destroy that kind of history? 3. From: "Mr & Mrs. Hill" <duckydove@torchlake.com> To: HILL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HILL-L] get in touch:) Date: Wed, 5 Feb 2003 20:08:36 -0800 I found this in :RootsWeb Review: RootsWeb's Weekly E-zine Vol. 6, No. 6, 5 February 2003, Circulation: 1,021,405+ (c) 1998-2003 RootsWeb.com, Inc. http://www.rootsweb.com/ My friend, Louise, in Lake City, Florida, shared how she got in touch with some of her kin that she had not been in touch with for a very long time and had completely lost contact with. When visiting the cemetery she wrote a note and put it in a plastic "zip-lock" bag and attached it to the grave marker. In about a year she received a phone call from a relative. I thought what a neat idea and plan on doing this and thought others might want to also. -- I found this very neat! I plan to do the same at many relatives gravemarkers:)>Lynda Hill === HILL Mailing List ==== _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. 3. This information was originally published by:ONTARIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY Papers and Records Volume ??, Published in Toronto in 19??Pg 112-120. BLACK LIST*A list of those Tories who took part with Great Britain In the Revolutionary War and were attainted of -:HIGH TREASON:-Commonly called the -:BLACK LIST:- to which is prefixed the legal opinions of ATTORNEYS-GENERAL McKEAN & DALLAS,etc. PHILADELPHIA, PRINTED FOR THE PROPRIETOR. 1802. Copyright secured according to Law.*Contributed by Mrs. J Rose Holden of Hamilton. snip)... It may, therefore, be proper to subdivide the question and consider, 1-The situation of those who, previous to the 11th February, 1777, adhered to the King of Great Britain. 2-The situation of those who, after that time, took the oath of allegiance,or joined the British, and have been attainted of high treason. 3-Of those who, after the 11th February, 1777, took the oath of allegiance to, or joined the British armies, and were NOT attainted of treason. 1.--With respect to those who, previous to Feb. 11th, 1777, made their election, and adhered to the British, I conceive there can be no doubt, they became British subjects, and could not afterwards become citizens of Pennsylvania, but by complying with the forms, etc., prescribed it the Acts for the naturalization of foreigners. This priciple seems to be settled by the case of the Commonwealth against Chapman, determined in the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, in April, 1781. 2.--With regard to those who, after February, 1777, joined the British, and were attainted of treason, where the attainder has not been reversed or a pardon procured, they cannot be considered as restored to the rights of citizenship. The treaty of peace did not operate as a reversal of the attainder nor as a pardon, but only protects the persons from further prosecution or punishment. 3.--As to the third class, who, after the 11th. February, 1777, took the oath of allegiance to the King of Great Britain, or joined the British armies, and were not attainted, they cannot be considered as expatriated;though such acts might be deemed overt acts of treason, they must still be considered as citizens, and entitled to the rights of citizenship. Till attainder, their rights were not forfeited. The test laws have now no operation on the question, unless to show the sense of the Legislature in support of the above principle. By the eleventh section of the Act of 5th December, 1778, it is enacted that those who had taken the oath or affirmation of allegiance to the State, and afterwards to the King of Great Britain, should be incapable of election, etc., until they should take the oath therein prescribed by the Act of 13th March, 1789,all the test laws were repealed, and the oath of allegiance, etc.,rendered unnecessary. So that those who took an oath of allegiance to the King of Great Britain, joined his banner, or committed any other treasonable act, are not disfranchised unless attainted. J. B. McKEAN. IN JULY, 1768, FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, DAWKINS WITHDREW FROM THE PROJECT AND THE WORK WAS COMPLETED BY JAMES SMITHER, ALSO FROM PHILADELPHIA. THE MAP WAS PRINTED BY ROBERT KENNEDY OF PHILADELPHIA http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinIntros/Pitt.intro.html In 1859 Montroville Dickeson in his The American Numismatic Manual stated the dies for the Pitt tokens were made by James Smither, an attribution that has continued in the numismatic literature. Smither was an English born gunsmith and engraver who worked in Philadelphia during the 1760's-1770's. He is know for engraving the border cuts for the April 3, 1772 emission of Pennsylvania currency. It seems Smither was a Tory sympathizer for on June 25, 1778 the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania accused Smither of high treason. Following this pronouncement Smither left Philadelphia with the British troops and took up residence in the British stronghold of New York City, not returning to Philadelphia until 1786. http://www.goldbergcoins.net/catalogarchive/20010216/chap002.shtml 1766 Pitt Token Halfpenny. PCGS graded AU-58. These were struck to commemorate the victory of the American people over the stamp act. The obverse depicts Sir William Pitt, who defended the rebellious colonists in America by supporting their cause in Parliament. Pitt stated "as subjects they are entitled to the common right of representation, and cannot be bound to pay taxes without their consent,"--Pitt further demanded the Stamp Act be repealed, which it was soon thereafter. James Smither engraved the dies, allegedly from sketches by Paul Revere, and they were struck in either New York or Philadelphia. Light chocolate brown in color and well struck by the dies, the surfaces are free of problems and the coin is highly desirable. A scarce coin in this grade, and worth a strong bid. Estimated Value $2,500-UP. http://olivetreegenealogy.com/loy/muster/pa1778.shtml LOYALIST & BRITISH MUSTER ROLLS Contributor Murray McCombs 1778 List of Men From Pennsylvania who joined the British Army The following individuals are reported in the June 17, 1778 edition of the Pennsylvania Packet as having joined the British Army and were therefore proclaimed traitors to the United States .
