    2. Jackie Johnston
    3. I am looking for information on a connection to the John and Catherine (Sherwood) Smothers that married Pyle(s)/Pile(s). I am looking to see if there is a connection between these Pyle(s)/Pile(s) and a Conrad or Coonrad Pile(s)/Pyle(s) was believe to have been born in Buncombe County North Carolina around 1766. He moved to Fentress County in Tennessee and passed away about 1864. He had son Elijah that married a Rebecca Earp they had several children that married Williams, Delks, Riley, Stewarts and Brooks. Fentress County is near Sumner County in Tennessee. Any information would be appreciated. Spelling of names may vary. Thanks in advance. Jackie --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses at TNWEB LLC]

    1. [SMOTHERS] ~Ship High In Transit~ A Fact
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. PLEASE dont take this offensively, I thought it VERY interesting! So many 'slang' words we use today had TOTALLY DIFFERENT meanings back then.....I know another story abt another word too.....yep, guess..starts with an 'f' and it meant 'to strike the ground'....many of our slang words used today began with the Barbaric conquering Anglo Saxons. Ship High in Transit In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything was transported by ship. It was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of manure were common. In dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did)happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term "S.H.I.T" on them, which meant to the sailors to "Ship High In Transit." In other words, high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Now....I would not doubt, some of our ancestors were on these ships that blew up...never to be heard from or documentated again! _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

    1. [SMOTHERS] Smothers Brothers-Part 3
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. I rec'd a news article in the mail fr a Cuz Smeathers and want to share it with you as it relates to the Smothers Bros, so ironic bec I had no idea I was receiving it and too coincidental to receive it when this discussion is going on. [There is no date on it, so I do not know when this was in the paper, maybe cuz can clue us in when she reads this]. Interesting many of us have had some connection to them bef we ever thought abt genealogy. "FAMILY UNITED" BY Marvelle Smeathers Mueller, Monroe WI "We corresponded by mail and phone for four months on our family tree before I met them for the first time. Tom sent us free tickets to see their show at the Capitol Civic Center in Manitowac WI where past famous movie stars traveled by train from Calif. to entertain. We were escorted back stage by three guards to meet Tom and Dick. I was shocked to see how much Tom & Dick looked like my dec'd brothers Norman & Raymond. I showed Tom a picture of my brother & Tom said, "Look Dick, he looks just like us, he has our big ears!" My maiden name is Smeathers and Tom & Dick are Smothers. Our late past 5th generation grandfather changed our name. The real name is Smothers. [??] Dick has a son who is a professional singer and so is my daughter Teri & my son Steve is a singer & drummer." Under this is a picture of Marvelle's brother, Raymond, in a side view [I guess to show the profile & ears] and a picture of Tom is on the other side. [they certainly do look like brothers!] Under these 2 are 3 pictures, Marvelle is in the center with Tom and Dick on each side of her. [I see much resemblence for sure.] They are standing behind probably a big poster or sign that is a replica of the Sign that is at the William Smeathers Park in Owensboro KY. It says: "Bill Smothers Park". Site of home of William Smeathers [Bill Smothers] who in 1797-98 made first permanent settlement at Yellow Banks, now Owensboro. Officer in Kentucky "Corn Stalk" Militia in 1803 and on expedition up the Wabash River against the Indians; in the War of 1812 under General Samuel Hopkins. [notice nothing abt being in Rev War]. He then went to Texas as an Indian Hunter and guide. He died there 1837." Many yrs ago when I still lived in Tx and bef genealogy, my aunt, my father's sister told me she had made a trip to Richmond VA to do some research on our Smothers. She had these long narrow tubes with brittle parchment like paper in them and told me she had found out we were related to the Smothers Brothers. She eventually gave the tubes to me and for yrs I have tried to find them, without any luck-[I dont know what happened to them, unless they got lost in my moving fr Tx to Wa in 1973-Nena] Fr cuz of our Smeathers line:-this is so interesting. When I was five we lived in California for only one year. I remember very clearly my father talking about the Smothers Brothers and they were performing there (nobody knew about them back then --this would have been 1957) and he said they were our cousins. Wouldn't that be great if they did the DNA. I have always wondered "how" we were cousins. It wasn't something my father would say unless he was sure about it --and he was specific in telling us because nobody knew who they were and he and my mother went to see them perform as I recall. Not something they would just ordinarily do either. Also, I'm really curious as to the ship their dad was on and if it might possibly been the same one Dwight Butler was on as well. A terrible tragedy. My husband's uncle D Butler (my son is named after him) was at the Bataan March and on a Japanese prisoner of war ship and it was actually (and most unfortunately) attacked by the U.S. as it was not marked. John's uncle died on that ship and I'm wondering if there is any possibility it was the same one of the Smothers' Brothers. So sad. Also--another tidbit. One of my customers owned a hotel in Houston by the name of Tidelands. It was sort of the first in Houston to bring in some unknown entertainers that then became famous--The Smothers Brothers were a couple that he had there. Last tidbit--when I was competing in racquetball many years ago,I recall reading that The Smothers' Brothers were both avid racquetball players. I didn't see any mention of that. [I saw this but did not list it!] Think I told you Mom visited with the Smother's brothers when here at Tacoma years ago--she was invited down to the ranch they had at that time in Calif. She has the program for that show and it is signed by Dick Smothers---Coop _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

Pittman Clay's Co. F 7th TN Calvary Florida has put their Civil War Veteran and Widow Pension Applications online http://dlis.dos.state.fl.us/barm/Pensionfiles.html I was checking out some of the Pittman/Pitman listings and ran across a Crockett Co. TN connection. Not sure how this Pittman fits into the Pittmans who were in the Gibson and Crockett Co. TN area. My Dekalb Co. TN Pittmans who had lived in Alabama around 1840 before moving on to Dekalb Co.TN(1850-1860)were migrating to Gibson Co. by 1880. I feel certain there must be a connection somewhere along the line. The site lists about 19 or so PDF files of J. A. Pittman's application which was filed over a period of years ending around 1911 as best as I can tell and I have extracted some of the info from them. J. A. Pittman who was living in Ocala Marion Co. Florida He enlisted in West Tenn in the Fall of 1862 in Clay's Co. F 7th TN Calvary J. G. Smothers & G. W. Moss were members of the regiment and at his time of filing they lived in Crockett Co. TN and filed an affidavit acknowledging that they were acquainted with him and that he had lived in Florida for about 25 years. J. A. Pittman is called James A. Pittman on a few of the records but mostly is referred to as J. A. Pittman. He states also in several parts of the document that he was born in Edgecombe Co. NC on Feb. 17 1839. If you use this info in your research please be sure you double check it by visiting the site and viewing the pension files for yourself.--MarieB Descend. of Daniel & Comfort Pitman and other Pittmans http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rmbeckman/pitman/ _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus

    1. [SMOTHERS] Don heart bypass surg.
    2. Don & Candy Smothers
    3. Dear cousins; Friday the 21 of February. Don will be having open heart surgery at the VA hospital in Indianapolis. They say they will take him in at 6:00am. Indiana time. I think it was February 6 when he came home from working at the church for lunch which is just about 5 blocks. He came in and played with our Dalmation and then went up stairs and came back down. We ate lunch and he asked me for some pain pills. I asked where his pain was and he said in his chest. He wouldn't let me take him to the ER. He did let me call the Danville IL.VA. His pain let up. They said bring him in so off we went. They kept him in the intensive care unit there and sent him to Indy VA. for a cardiac cath. We thought they would fix any trouble at the same time. But they came out an said the good news was that he had not had a heart attack and that the heart muscle was in good shape. The bad news was that the cornary artery disease was too bad to fix with a stint or angioplasty. We talked to the heart surgeons and they said he has three system disease. There are three arteries that are bolcked 2 on one side and one on the other. The two are each blocked 90% at the place they branch into a y. So each of those will probably take two bypasses. The other one on the other side is 70% and is a long straight blockage. They say it will probably take 4 or 5 bypasses. Thur. we go up for test. They are going to test the arteries in his arms They want to use a vein from his leg and an artery from his arm. They say the arteries from the arm are more resistant to plack build up and thus will likely last longer. Don is 55 and would like to not have to re do things to soon. Want them to last as long as possible. His Mom had open heart surg in 1975 and had a valve replaced. Both she and his brother had heart attacks when they were much younger than Don is now. Howard had one while in Vietnam. He was 21 years older than Don and passed away in 94 with a stroke. His Mom passed away in 1985. The surgery gave her 10 years. She had congestive heart surg Don's Dad died in 68 with a brain anurisum. We feel it is a miracle that they found the problem before he had a heart attack. Please keep us in your prayers. They say he will be in the hospital about a week. I will write you when we get back home. God Bless You, Candy --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses as a service to Keeling Inc. Customers]

    3. Candy, thank you for sharing and most certainly he is on my prayer list. I lost my father at 51y to a massive heart attack, his lst one was at 47y. It runs in our family....and I think I mentioned my brother also had a heart attack abt 2 months ago, prior to this cancer he has now. I understand the concerns and prayers and blessings for all of you and all our Smothers Tribe members going thru physical illness as well as deployed in War. thats what we are all abt right, taking care of each other, supportive and praying. Nena >From: "Don & Candy Smothers" <candy@k-inc.com> Dear Smothers Friends and Family; Don is going to have open heart surgery on Fri. the 21st. at the Indianapolis VA hospital. 2. Don & Candy Smothers
    3. Dear Smothers Friends and Family; Don is going to have open heart surgery on Fri. the 21st. at the Indianapolis VA hospital. Please keep us in your prayers. He has been short of breath alot lately and a week ago last Wednesday he had some chest pain. The Danivlle IL. VA. kept him in intensive care and sent him by ambulance to Indy. for a cardiac cath. We had expected that if he had andy blockage that they would fix it with a stint or angio plasty. When they got into the cardiac cath. they found what they called 3 system disease and said that it was to extensive to repair in those ways. They scheduled him for open heart surg. and let him come home to rest till then. The good news is he has not had a heart attack and the muscle of his heart is in good shape. Two of the arteries are blocked 90% where they branch off into a Y and one on the other side is blocked 70% but will be easier because it is a long straight blockage. The interesting thing is he has been so short of breath lately and they said that diabetics sometimes don't have the warning signs of pain and that the shortness of breath is their warning sign So if any of you Smothers are diabetic and are having shortness of breath more than usual tell your Dr. Don's only brother was 21 years older than him and he had a heart attack in Viet Nam many years ago. He passed away with a stroke in 94 I believe. Nina we will keep your brother in our prayers and Ron you will be in our prayers also. God Bless You all; Candy --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses as a service to Keeling Inc. Customers]

    1. [SMOTHERS] 1 Result in Smothers DNA Project 2003
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Hi Folks...the lst DNA result is in on our Smothers DNA Project 2003. I will have a more detailed report coming for you, but will post this for now so you can have a picture of how Nate compares to my brother and the Tx Smothers. Nate matched 11/12 markers with one mutation on the #9 marker to the above 2 Smothers that did the DNA testing in Nov. [I will explain markers, etc in a future post]. Tom-jump in here anytime & add yr notes as I know you are pretty up to date on DNA. What it does means is they all 3 have a Common Ancestor with a 50% probability within 14.5 generations, which would start with our 11x grandfather & come down. And what it means to the Smeathers line is a 50% probability of connecting to the Smither line of Pa that Nate is from. Nate's 4x grandfather is Wm Smither b 1710 d 1760 Pa. The Smeathers line 4x grandfather is Wm Smeathers b c1765-67 d 1837 Tx and his brother James Smeathers b c1769 d 1827 Ky. As far we know now there are no known siblings for Wm Smither b 1710. Wm Smither had 7 sons and 3 dau's: I will just list the sons by the various sp of the surname found. We await 3 more results from this line & 5 fr other lines. I dont think they know much abt their Smothers family. At a concert last summer I gave them a picture of their great uncle John Raine Smothers. JR's grand daughter mailed me the picture. She wanted Tommy to keep the picture because he looked exactly like John Raine." Fr:Sonja Ann Smothers Gunn Apr 27 2001-" I am a desc of Thomas Madison Smothers. My grandfather was John Raine Smothers. My father is Augustus Everette 'Gus' Smothers. I was b 1940. John Raine had 11 children and adopted 2. They were: Nannie 'Nan' Carr Smothers Parks, Walter 'Punk' Newell, William 'Bud' Matthew, Jesse Raine, Lottie Mae Smothers Chambers, Nathan Wright, Kelsie Virginia Smothers, Sharpe, Wells, Daniel Boone, Addie Inez Smothers Clark, Augustus 'Gus' Everette, Lillian Hazel Smothers Shelton. The 2 adopted are: Buddy and Willie, brothers. Aunt Kelsie adopted their sister, Mary Frances. Only my Dad, Gus and my Aunt Lillian are living. Daddy is 86 this yr and Aunt Lillian is 83. I asked Daddy where the Smothers came from and he said they lived down the road from where I lived now. He did not know of Thomas Madison. One of our kin searched but when she found the mulatto she stopped. John Raine told us we were part Indian. None of us have Negro characterists but we have high cheekbones and sparse body hair as the Indians. There are no thick lips. I wonder abt the mulatto business. It does not bother me but would like to know. I live in Pleasantville community. John and Thomas are buried in the primitive Baptist Church. We come from a long line of livers. Great Uncle Patrick Smothers died when he was 100. His brother Reuben was 95y and grandpa Raine was 91y. None of them smoked but did have their 'toddy'. Tommy and Dick Smothers are my 3rd cousins. Tommy looks like my grandfather John Raine Smothers. John Raine had 27 grandchildren and 6 adopted grandchildren. Grandpa had a 112 ac farm and Granny had 20ac. I grew up next door to them." [there is more, just got the highlites] Tom has a young son they call Bo....bet that's the Bolling fam. name on these records....don't you reckon? I am making copies of this to send to cuz to send to Smothers Bros maybe they will want to do the DNA......NOW I can understand why these guys were so anti Vietnam War....more understandable now knowing how they lost their dad....VERY VERY sad! 3. oh MY GOODNES...YES i DO KNOW WHO ST CLAIR IS...AND THIS IS THE WM SMITHER B 1710 PA LINE.....YES, I WILL PUT YOU ON OUR SMITHERS MAIL LIST....THERE IS A GAL ON OUR SMOTHERS LIST FR ST CLAIR, BUT YOU PROB KNOW HER..MARILYN CAMPBELL.....NENA >From: Cwo2usn@aol.com Thank you for responding to my e-mail so quickly. I will have to e-mail you the exact dates this week, but Jessie Smothers was married to Ward Phelps. Her father was Charles Smothers, and according to the information that I found on the web site his father was a St. Clair Smothers. I was getting really confused with the George's - guess they really liked the name George to name two children that! I'm still trying to sort through the info. I printed off last night. I can imagine how excited you are! I find genealogy fascinating and I think I drive my family crazy sometimes! I am more excited to discover that a Smothers fought in the Civil War than my husband & kids and he is their ancestor! I would love to be put on your mailing list if that is okay. Will e-mail later,>Kathy Phelps>Newnan, GA _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

Smothers Brothers Mother Loved Tom More-Tom and Dick Smothers Mother's diary was uncovered and it was revealed that she loved Tom more. http://thefunnyline.com/November%202002.pdf Glenn Greenwood-AOSHS/AOSA Communications Director aoshscom@wichita.edu THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS - TOM AND DICK SMOTHERS COMEDIANS http://aoshs.wichita.edu/famousS-U.html Tom & Dick Smothers are Army Brats. They were both born at Fort Jay on Governor's Island in New York. Their father Major Smothers was captured in the Philippines during WW2 and participated in the Bataan March. Major Smothers died on board a Japanese prisoner-of-war ship on the way to Japan. http://www.nnp.org/newvtour/regions/Hudson/nut_island.html If you were to enter New York Harbor by ship, as the first explorers and settlers did, before reaching Manhattan you would come to a smaller island jutting out into the harbor - an ideal base for establishing a small settlement and fort for defending the harbor and the Hudson River from would-be invaders. The Dutch explorers of the early 17th century thought as much, and they chose this, which they named Noten Eylant, or Nut Island, after the walnut and chestnut trees that grew there, as their initial base. We know it today as Governor's Island. In 1624, the ship Nieu Nederlandt (New Netherland) put in at the island, under the command of Cornelis Jacobsz May. May's passengers comprised a group of 30 families from an area of the Low Countries or Spanish Netherlands called Wallonia. The Netherlands was in the midst of a long war with Spain, and at the time Wallonia was under Spanish rule. Spain hoped to reconvert the Walloons to Catholicism; thus, along with the Pilgrims who had arrived at Cape Cod just four years earlier, these were among first of what would be droves of refugees coming to America seeking religious freedom. Soon after arriving, most of these settlers were transported further up the Hudson River, to present-day Albany. A party of eight men was left on Nut Island, as the West India Company, their employer, thought to make this the center of its fur-trading operations. One year later, the company sent 45 more colonists and several hundred cows, horses, sheep and pigs. Also in this party was Willem Verhulst, the new director-general of the province, along with an engineer who would lay out a fort and the main streets of a town. It was soon decided that Nut Island was too small to serve as a permanent capital, so Verhulst ordered the settlers to move approximately 500 yards across the harbor to Manhattan, thus beginning the decline of Nut Island and the establishment of the town of New Amsterdam, later New York City. It wasn't until 1784 that Nut Island was renamed Governor's Island. For most of its history Governor's Island has been at the disposal of the U.S. military, which has not wanted to part with it but also never found a good use for it. It's thus been a kind of junk drawer of military history, a place where things have been stored, and where odd bits of history have happened:The comedy team of Tom and Dick Smothers were born on the island in 1937, when their father was stationed here. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/change-style/tg/detail/-/B0000063EI Tommy and Dicky's father died in the Bataan Death March in WWII. They also have a sister named Sherry so their mom really did have a Tom, Dick, and Sherry. http://www.nbaa.org/conventions/2002/attendees/banquet.htm Tom and Dick Smothers were born in New York City and attended San Jose State University in California. Their enduring appeal as a comedic team has brought them fame and honor, including a Museum of Broadcasting retrospective and seminar on their work and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is studied in universities across the country as an important factor in the revolutionary changes undergone in the United States during the 1960s. http://users2.ev1.net/~smyth/linernotes/personel/DrakeTom.htm. In the spring of 1958 Bobby & Kingston Trio went to a barbecue that afternoon on a houseboat in Sausalito. The houseboat belonged to a couple of struggling young musicians named Tom and Dick Smothers. http://homepages.ntws.net/sites/ghogue/comedy.html. Comedians Tom and Dick Smothers had several television programs: The Smothers Brothers Show in September of 1965, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in February of 1967, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in July of 1970, The Smothers Brothers Prime Time Space Ride in 1971, and The Smothers Brothers Show in January of 1975. ~~~~~~~~~~ _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
