From: "Norm Hopkins" <nhopkins@rconnect.com> Source: HOPKINS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HOPKINS-L] Joseph S. Hopkins Hello Candy and Barb Aseneath Hopkins dtr of Eldridge and Zillah. Her death record stated that she was consort of James Brady Yet in my hand is a normal looking marraige certificate dated 30 Oct 1851. Can anyone explain what being his consort means? [mistress] About the other siblings of Joseph and Eldrige. Younger Brothers Andrew J. and William Ward came along with Joseph and their parents William and Sarah(Smothers) to Davis co. Iowa. William Ward went on to Lancaster, Miami,Kansas. A Andrew J. Hopkins Is in Howell co. Mo in 1886. I don't know that this is the same Andrew J. Candy your recolection that Josephs wife Aseneath stayed in Indiana is interesting. I searched diligently in Indiana for a record of divorce or death with no result. (That was how I found edridges dtr Aseneath.) I think that less probable with the Morris family ( I forget if its uncle or brother) living next door in the 1850 census of Davis co. What happened to Aseneath might be important in the understanding of the appearance of Sarah Hamner. Is it coincidence that she bought land adjacent to Joseph in 1846? In 1850 Joseph and Sarah were married in the home of Edmund D. Hamner. What was the relationship with Edmund D.??? We know Edmund had a sister Sarah A. However, Hamner researchers claim that this is the Sarah Hamner that married Jacob Siebert and died in bartholomew co. 1859. Can anyone shed some light on this??>Norm Hopkins _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. Trempealeau Co., WI, ELK CREEK - Located in the Township of Hale, this area was named in 1842 by William B. Bunnell and William Smothers who hunted here. The valley of Elk Creek is also known as Pleasant Valley. PIGEON - A township in the mideast portion of the county, it was named after Pigeon Creek. William B. Bunnell and William Smothers saw great flocks of wild passenger pigeons roosting along the creek while on a hunting trip.
Nena, Regarding your reference to Smother in Bavaria, are you referring to the European country (German province) or to a place in Pennsylvania? If it is in Pennsylvania, do you know where? Karen...well, its not necessary to post bec I got an issue in the mail today.....?? and saw the article by Jack Pope on pg 3...which runs with many errors to say the least, not just the sp......pappy Smeathers was NOT in Tx in 1803 and Betsy NEVEr went to Tx either bec she died in Indiana.....gees...what a mess. I know Steve Grimes, think I will be chatting with him. If they are going to write abt our ancestors and publish a book, which I have also, it sure would be nice if they'd get their facts correct....[grin]. In the book our line is on pg 157 where it starts with my grandfather Ed [should be E.D.] Smothers, he doesn't even list MY father, just my Dad's sister Osilee & her name is sp wrong. Then on pg 154 "4. Charles Smothers"....well, hes NOT a Smothers, that whole line is Ashby or whoever raped my 3x grandmother Mary Harris Ashby! DNA proved this last Nov. but it was already widely known by that line before. I've said it before our line is a mess, we've been lucky to even sort out some of the errors. And the reason I mentioned to you bef abt Smeathers NOT being in Rev War was bec the military records all folks used to get into DAR were that of a Black Wm Smothers who lived in VA all his life, so DAR closed the line to him for anyone trying to get in. Well....Betsy SMEATHERS father was Wm SMEATHERS...they always sp it wrong! But this is our Betsy and John Berry. They had 3 sons, John Bate Berry b Ky, Andrew Jackson Berry b In and Joseph Berry b In. They did end up going to Tx around 1828, Betsy died in Ind. we suppose, as John Berry md 2x to a Gracie Treat in Monroe Co Ind 1819 & had 3 dau's. She then d in Tx around 1830 and he md 3x to Hannah Devore and had 13-15 more kids, in all he had over 20 kids. Only AJ had children. John Bate m 2x, 2nd to 1/2 Cherokee lady who had been md bef to Wm Gentry who died in the war and they had a young son abt 5y when John md Nancy Frazier Gentry. When this son grew up and md he named his son John Bate Gentry. And again this name was carried down by him to his son. I've often thought this 'Bate' middle name has to mean something bec Wm Smeathers named my 3x grandfather John Bate Smeathers sr. Just have never figured it out, unless it might have been Wm Smeathers mother's maiden name. I would be interested in the Berry Newsletter post to see what they are saying abt the family. I am not a member or sub to it. Have seen it a few times and the pic on it is suppose to resemble John Berry, if so, he was quite good looking man. A desc of Andrew Jackson Berry wrote the Berry Book which inc all 3 wives and data on Wm Smeathers, over 900 pgs. Judge Jack Pope, believe he's in his 80s now but living in Austin or Georgetown Tx. Its also got tons of other Berry info in it and inc all our Smothers lines in it too fr this family. thanks for the post, Nena ps-what is yr Berry connection? From: Katheo2@aol.com Hi, all..... Are there many of you that are Berry descendents? John Berry married Betsy Smothers, daughter of Wm. or Bill Smothers, of TX history. I was just curious. Kybrenda@aol.com 19 Mar 2003 16:03:46 EST I have the following reference I'm willing to do lookups from over the next month. How to request a look up: 1 request per email and resource (you can send as many emails as you want) Put the following in the subject line LOOKUP 1850 Indiana census, Or 1910 Look up or Marriage look up whatever the resource is. In the body of the letter, put name, dates, ect, whatever info you have that might help me find some info on who you are looking for. The marriage index are just that, only names county and date, nothing else, and please pay attention to the years I have and for what counties, all are different. Please don't ask for information I can't supply. Please don't expect an answer in a couple of hours, it may take a week to find your information, but I will get back to you wether I find anything or not. I don't mind surname searches as long as it's not something like check all resources for SMITHS in Kentucky, Please understand I can't do that. You must request like BROWNS in Bullitt County, KY before 1800, or something like that. I enjoy helping others, and nothing gives me greater pleasure than finding something you can use, but with an offer this big you must follow the rules or I won't be able to help you.
