He married Sarah Elizabeth BARNES 29 APR 1857 in Benton Co., TN, daughter of William BARNES and Sarah WYATT. She was born 24 AUG 1837 in Benton Co., TN, and died 26 SEP 1883 in Benton Co., TN. He married Victoria Alice "Cora" BAGGETT 20 NOV 1884 in Benton Co., TN, daughter of Henry W. BAGGETT and Mrs. Elvira BAGGETT. I also show that James Franklin Smothers as buried there also, but there is a Jas. F. Smothers buried at Palestine Cemetery, near Holladay, Benton Co., TN with the same birth, death, and marriage information. I do find it hard to believe that he would be buried at Palestine with his ex-wife Sarah E. ____ instead of his last wife Mrs. Baggett at Pleasant Hill. I am unable to clear this discrepancy up at this time though. * I show that James F. Smothers was a Master Mason at Mt. Carmel Lodge No. 333 F&AM of Holladay, TN. Military: Federal Army Volunteer, Enlisted at Huntington, TN. while the 2nd West Tennessee Cavalry was being organized. Occupations: Methodist Episcopal Minister, Civil War Soldier, 1870 Farmer, 1900 Farmer. ii. William Harrison SMOTHERS was born 11 AUG 1841 in Carroll Co., TN, and died 18 JAN 1933 in Benton Co., TN. She was born 23 FEB 1847 in Carroll Co., TN, and died 5 JAN 1934 in Marion, Williamson Co., IL. * I show that William Harrison Smothers was buried also at Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetary, Benton Co., TN. * His wife Martha Townsend-Smothers was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Williamson Co., IL. iii. Mary "Polly" SMOTHERS was born 1842-1845 in Carroll Co., TN, and died AFT 1879 in (last known residence Carroll Co., TN). * Also buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetary, Benton Co., TN. iv. Wiley SMOTHERS was born 1844-1849 in TN, and died MAR 1880 in Carroll Co., TN. He married Catherine DILLON 30 JUN 1869 in Carroll Co., TN. She was born 1839-1840 in TN, and died AFT 1880 in (last known residence: Carroll Co., TN, 1880). * I show year of birth to be 1845 in TN. * I show marriage at March 24, 1859 Carroll Co., TN. (Married by M. Pinkston J.P). Where did the original marriage date come from.. anyone know? v. John SMOTHERS was born 1851-1852 in TN (Carroll Co. probably), and died AFT 1859 in (last known residence Benton Co., TN, 1860). * I don't have any further information on this person. Thanks for the information, and I hope someone finds use for the information that I was able to find. Thanks, Tony

    3. I supplied Terry with that info. The funny thing was without his help, I may not have ever had any leads. He had a family tree posted that listed Dilver Smothers. I knew that was one of my dad's brothers (I forget how I knew this!), so I emailed him and inquired about his family. He had me contact a man named Randall Vinson, he is related to my uncles daughter Cecelia Hope Smothers. I called Hopes mom, Francis Newbill and found out how to contact my Aunt Daisy. Whew! Confused yet? It was all a large tail chasing incident, but I was able to finally contact my Aunt. I traveled out to their home county and we all met and I love them all dearly. It has been a very rewarding experience finding out about family. Sofar, all of the Smothers I've contacted have been wonderful. 3. Fr another list..... You can order microfilms of Augusta co land records from the Library of VA through interlibrary loan from your local library. If you want to look over a large span of time, it would be prudent to first order the grantee and grantor indexes for surnames starting with "S"; that will give you all the transactions involving Sellerses - then you can order the appropriate deed books that contain the actual transactions. See here for the list of reel numbers to order: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/local/local_rec/county_city/augusta.htm When you fill out your ILL form, put "obtain from Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA" on it so your library won't waste time looking elsewhere for these records. Include the reel number, county name, and reel title. Films can take a month to arrive; maybe longer now, due to the budget cuts. Smathers, a well known resident of the Spring Creek country, passed away a few days ago. Elder J.E. Adams, who officiated at the funeral writes to the AGRI.: Mr. Smathers was born in Haywood county, N.C., in 1841. When a young man he moved to Georgia, where he was married. There was born to this union two sons, Henry Smathers, now of Klickitat, and Smith Smathers, now residing in North Caroline. After the death of his wife, he married again, from which union there is two children. He and family came to Klickitat in 1900 to make their future home. In early life Mr. Smathers professed a hope in Christ and united with a Missionary Baptist church. He died at his home at Firwood, after a short illness, on Sept. 20th, the funeral taking place at the Spring Creek school house on Sept. 22nd, the interment taking place at the cemetery at that place. He leaves behind it, concludes Elder Adams, a beloved wife, three sons and one daughter, and a host of friends to mourn his absence. [HOME] © Jeffrey L. Elmer

    2. Mitzi Smetters
    3. Nena, As you said, we may never know where these lines began. Below are a few of my notes regarding the origins the the Smither/Smether/Smothers/etc. line. Mitzi <msmetters@ncweb.com> Visit our CyberHome at <www.ncweb.com/users/msmetters> _____________ From: <SScanfish@aol.com> To: <msmetters@ncweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 03, 2000 10:44 AM Subject: Family line "Tradition and records states that William Smithers was English in background and his marriage a German woman, Maria Katharina Jeaky, was frowned on (she spoke no English). So they went to live in her community of Pennsylvania. "William Smither was zealous of his Welsh heritage and insisted that the surname Smither be included for each child in his will. He state that his children were using invalid German aliases due to the influence of his German wife Maria Catharina Jeakey (Jackel). "This shows he probably had knowledge of his heritiage. His will was signed with an X. . . . it notes that the last name is Smither and not Smithers. Smither being a Welsh name. "Steve Smothers" Also from Steve Smothers: "My family is from William Smithers ) (actually William Smither). William Smither (#2) m. Maria Katharina Jeaky (b. Germany?) frowned on..(she spoke no English)..so they went to live in her community of PA. They had many children: John, Willia, Aaron, George, Jacob, Christian, Anna-Eliabeth, Susanna, Mary, Valentine (He married in VA and became a Smathers). "These children grew up reading, writing and speaking German. When the boys were old enough to learn English only one son wrote his name Smetters.(the way a German would)...the rest used Smothers or Smethers. "John Smither [father of George Nicholas] was about the third generation of his family in America. Four Smither men, named John, William, George, and Thomas arrived about 1650-1670 from Whales and landed in Virginia. Descendants were found in Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. Steve Smothers did not supply sources for this information nor connection evidence to show that the John Smither of this entry was related to the four men from Whales. "The official Pennsylvania-German society records do not list the names Schmetter, Schmethers, Smethers, Smetters, Smothers, Smither, Smathers, Smuthers or any other variation as attributed to a Palatine or German family that imigrated that imigrated to Pennsyvania. I have yet to investigate it, and I will keep you informed. It is information that came from a family Bible. I am trying to locate the person with the Bible to see for myself. It was supposed to have been written in the early 1800's by Margaret Rittenhouse Smethers, wife of Lawrence Smethers, and passed down to my gg-grandmother, Lawrence's daughter, Margaret Smethers Thoma. From there, it has been passed to Margaret Scott, daughter of Margaret Smethers Thoma's son Edwin. "Patty"

    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Mitzi......then we should just place Smither on the other side of Schmetters and then after Schmetter bec thats the way it happened apparently. None of us can prove any Smither that came here. We dont even know for sure WHERE Wm Smither was born, Eng or Pa or whereever, we just know he died in PA and we CAn NOT prove who his father REALLY is either....so to say we were a line of Wm Smither then Schmetter/Schmedder due to his wife baptising all the kids as such..and many and various records even some census use this sp....then it fanned out to Smither [s], Smeathers, Smathers, Smothers....so now would you agree with that? and did it not also fan out to Smetters and Smethers.......correct me please if this in correct, thanks, Nena Since the Smothers name, at least in our line appears to trace back to Smeathers to Smathers to Smithers to Schmetters or Schmedders.[Smither [s]....this is really a good site to figure out why the German way sometimes used for instance, Jurg or Anna or Maria so often in front of more than 1 child in the family. 1. Re: [SMOTHERS] site for German naming patterns
    2. Mitzi Smetters
    3. Nena, I am confused. Your message indicates that the SMITHER(S) name was derived from the SCMETTERS (SCHMEDDERS) name. I thought that it was the other way around -- that most of us researching the various lines in the United States assume they come from SMITHER(S) who arrived here in the 1600's from the British Isles or Wales; and that some descendants married German women and adopted German spellings, language, and culture. My understanding is that this is why the German variations of the name were used by some in later generations. Thanks for all you continued research and sharing!
