    1. Charles Smothers
    2. Noah Smothers
    3. Ok Smothers mail list can we help Anne out? Dear Noah I believe my Charles Smothers was born between 1790-1805, he was listed in the 1820 Rockingham County Census, where we believe he married Sina. Sina was born in 1799 in Caswell Co., NC. Apparently, Charles and Sina moved to Guilford County before the 1830 Census. It is believed that this family was of either Indian or African descent. From the pictures that I have, I suspect they were Indian, from what tribe - I do not know. However, in the 1850 Sina is listed as N heading a mulatto household with children Matilda and Robert. In the 1860 (Greensboro) & 1870 (Gilmer Twp.) census, she is listed as being white. Sinie Smothers is enumerated in Gilmer Twp. in the 1880 Census, living with her son Alfred. Charles and Sina had six children: 1) Charles Robert born in 1828 in Rockingham. He married 4 times. Julia Cook (1855, Forsyth), Sarah Gunner (September 09, 1858, Guilford), Anna McCoy (August 26, 1878, Gilmer Twp., d/o William) & Catherine Hall (1885, Gilmer Twp, d/o Peggy). Charles Robert and Sarah Gunner had two children, Emma & Mary. Charles was a carpenter in 1860 & registered to vote in Greensboro in 1867. 2) Matilda born 1827 or 1830 probably in Rockingham. It is unclear if the children listed in the 1860 Census - Mary and Ann - living in Sina's household were Matilda's children or Sina's ... However, Sina would have been 51 years old, when Mary was born & 58 years old when Ann was born. Therefore, I believe these children were Matilda's, yet I don't know if she ever married. Mary married Henry L. Holden in October 08, 1867, in Guilford Co., NC., he was the son of Solomon & Peny. 3) Elizabeth (Bettie A. or Betsy) was born either 1831 or 1838 in Guilford County (depending on Census info). Betsy married John Mitchell on September 10, 1863, in Guilford County. There were 3- John Mitchell's living in Guilford County - all in Greensboro - in the 1860 Census. In the 1880 Census, Elizabeth Mitchel is living in her brother, Alfred's home - no husband is mentioned. Later, for whatever reason, Elizabeth went back to using the Smothers' last name. She was living in Greensboro on Liberty St. in 1890. I believed she died sometime after 1907. No children. 4) Alfred S. was born in 1836 in Guilford County. Alfred S. married Sarah F. Pritchett (b 1846) on March 04, 1880, in Guilford Co., NC. She was the d/o William. They had one son, William T. born ca 1878 who married Johanna Lee Lewis in 1900, in Guilford, she was the d/o Charles & Joanna J. Lewis. Alfred S. was a factory worker in the 1880 Census. He was registered to vote in 1867 in Greensboro. 5) George W. (my relative) was born in 1839 in Guilford. George married Mary Elizabeth Watson on June 26, 1866 in Petersburg, VA. She was the d/o Francis E. Watson & Elizabeth S. Poland. And, the granddaughter of John Watson & Elizabeth Puckett. According to our family records, "George W. Smothers enlisted in the Confederate Army on Feb 22, 1862 from Guilford County, NC (listed as age 26. He served as a teamster through much of 1863, was captured at Petersburg on April 3, 1865, and imprisoned at Harts Island, NY, before being released on June 19, 1865, - going back to our family history -- ). He served in Co. E of the 22nd North Carolina Regiment of Pender's Brigade in General A. P. Hill's Division, having fought in many of the important battles in the Northern Virginia campaign, he was wounded and captured at Gettysburg. He was imprisoned as a prisoner of war in Auburn, NY, living on bread and water. After the war, he walked back to his home. On the way home he stopped at a farm outside of Petersburg, VA and knocked at the door and asked for breakfast. He was invited in and was given food by the Watson family. Mary, who was helping in the kitchen, asked him questions about himself and his experiences during the war. Upon leaving he asked for their address so that he could thank them for their kindness to him. He and Mary corresponded frequently. After arriving at his home he found that everything had been destroyed, his family gone and the carpetbaggers had taken whatever was left. He returned to Petersburg, married Mary Elizabeth Watson, and went to work on the railroad as a machinist." They had 2 children, Nancy Elizabeth & Thomas Andrew. George W. Smothers died August 31, 1891, in Petersburg & his wife died January 14, 1892, in Norfolk. I have a lot more information about this family, if you are interested. 6) Pinkney Smothers born about 1840 in Guilford. Pinkney was living in Guilford in 1860. He, along with his brother George, enlisted Feb 22, 1862 at the age of 22, as "Pinkney Smothers," listing his birthplace as Guilford rather than Rockingham (though his unit was Rockingham-based, Co. E, 22nd Regt.) He was discharged Feb 1, 1864 for a "physical disability." Pinkney was charged with bastardy on Sally Buchanan in 1864, his brother Robert Smothers paid the bond. Pinkney was registered to vote in 1867 in Greensboro. Pinkney purchased land "lot 9 of the Gillespie tract" on what is today known as McConnell Road on Jan 16, 1862. On Feb 7, 1862 he conveyed the land to J.W. Parker & W. Holt, and on April 14, 1864, these two men conveyed it to Sina Smothers. Note: There was a James Pinkney Smothers born in 1825 in Rockingham County, NC who married Elizabeth Wooleen and later married her sister Mary Eliza Woollen. How common is the name Pinkney? I find it interesting that your relative Thomas Randall Smothers is listed in Guilford in 1840-N w/8, FPC. In 1850, he is listed as being white. And, in 1860 listed as a "mulatto." Also the fact that Thomas Randall (who lived in Rockingham County) married Susan Mays in 1830 in Guilford County. Thomas Boyln Smothers married Ruth Remick. Thomas was a West Point educated Career Officer who died in 1945 in a Japanese prison. Ruth Smothers died in Jan 3, 1988 (of emphysema) in Santa Rosa, Sonoma, CA. She was born Jan 15, 1916. Her SS# 572-20-6692. Their son Thomas Smothers was born Feb 2, 1937 in NYC, he had learning disabilities. He married 3 times. In the first marriage, he had a son Tommy, born about 1967, his mother is a social worker in Arcata, CA. Tommy's second marriage ended in 1979. He then married Marcey Carriker and had a son and a daughter. Richard "Dick" Smothers was born November 20, 1939, (I thought in the Philippines). He attended Verduo Hills High School, Los Angeles, CA in 1953. He married Denby Franklin, she was born about 1951. There is a family legend that we are related to the Smothers Brothers. However, I have found no "actual" evidence. My grandmother did spend an evening with Tommy and Dick Smothers. Needless to say, she found them charming. I have also requested information from Tommy & Dick Smothers, without success. I have run out of time for today, as I must get ready for work. Please tell me more about the earlier Smothers! Sincerely, Anne Lyle

    3. The Petition Requesting the Establishment of Rutherford County To the honorable, the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee. The petition of a number of the citizens of Davidson and Williamson Counties humbly sheweth that the vast extent of said counties renders it inconvenient for your petitioners to attend Courts, General Musters, Elections, etc. at the towns of Nashville and Frandklin, and there being a sufficiency of territory agreeable to the Constitution, to form a new county within the bounds hereafter to be described and leaving constitutional quanities within the bound of the old counties. We your petiitoners therefore pray that you will consider our situation and grant us a new county with the following boundaries , viz: beginning on the top of the ridge dividing the waters of Stones River and Mill Creek, in the Williamson County line, and run southwardly with said ridge so as to leave all the waters of Mill Creek and Harpeth in Williamson County, until the ridge intersects the now Eastern boundary of said Williamson County;- thence conntinue South with said line of Williamson County to the South boundary of this State;-thence with the line of Wilson County North and NorthWestwardly continuing with said county line to an elm and white ash, the corner of said county, which is North East from the mouth of Hurricane Creek, which is four miles and thirty six poles; thence from the mouth of Hurricane Creek South West to the top of the first mentioned ridge; thence with said ridge Southwardly to the beginning. And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray. August 10, 1803 Andrews, David Andrews, James Andrews, John Anthony, John Jr. Aspey, Alex Avery, William Isom Baldwell, Ruben Barfield, Fredk. 3. A Tribute to and 1936 Obituary of Thomas F. Berry of Velva ND Thomas F. Berry was one of the earliest pioneers in this community. He came with Andrew Pendroy, James Pendroy and his son John to the Mouse River via Bismark in August, 1882. They drove across the prairie camping where the Verendrye monument now stands. James Pendroy took that claim. They started out in search of a neighbor as their food provisions, tent bedding, coats all ammunition and part of their guns were destroyed by fire. They came to the cabin of Yankee Robinson, a trapper who had located in the same section that Spring. After spending the night at the Robinson home they were given flour to make pancakes on their four day journey. The unsatisfactory pancakes of flour and water, fryed in a dry pan at noon, were much improved at supper with the aid of skunk grease. In February, 1884, T.F. Berry volunteered to take his turn spending a night on the prairie in an attempt to carrying mail. He was caught in a blizzard as there was no stopping places between Washburn and the Dogdens. February 22, 1884, the Pendroy boys and T.F. Berry with four horses on a sled drove to Burlington to a dance, gathering up a crowd as they went. Four days were required for the trip. Music was furnished from Scriptown. At another party at Jim Wilson's near Scriptown, T.F. Berry danced a jig on the bread board since there were no floors in the log cabin. November 6, 1884 Johnny Pendroy, T.F. Berry and T.S. Donnel accidentally camped with the 18 Montana cowboys, who came and arrested three horse thieves, ....(Author note-Dec 1998: I have omitted the last names of the three arrested thieves, which were printed in the newspaper article.) Next morning, when the cowboys, with provisions, were ready to leave, one told Berry to get word to his family he would not be back for some time. The cowboy leader smiled at Berry as much as to say that he agreed with the thief. This was the last known of the three horse thieves, but the next spring the bodies of three men were found near the shores of Strawberry Lake. This put an end to horse stealing along the Mouse River for the time being. (The above was taken from an essay by Ruby Cowell of Verendrye in 1928. She was awarded first prize in the historical contest sponsored by The Federated Clubs of North Dakota, winning $50.00 cash. Her information was secured from diaries kept by John B. Pendroy and information from his son, Johnnie B. Pendroy.) Obituary of Thomas F. Berry October 1, 1936: Thomas F. Berry passed away at his apartment in the Velva Hotel building Friday morning. He was taken suddenly ill that morning with a heart attack and passed away a few hours later. Prior to that time he had always enjoyed good health. Surviving are his wife and two sisters. Services are being held from the Methodist Church, of which he was a charter member. Tom Berry was closely identified with the history of the Mouse River Valley. He came to this section in search of grazing land. Tom was born in Marion County Iowa in November 5, 1854. only son of William and Rachel (Pendroy) Berry. (Author note: Tom Berry died at age 82) In 1892 Tom married Miss Isabelle Smothers at Iowa. They established a home on the Berry Ranch northeast of Verendrye. In 1893, following laying of the Soo Line Rails, Mr. and Mrs. Berry engaged in the restaurant and hotel business. Later they built the Hotel (Russell House) then the Hotel Berry. In the early days of Velva, Mr. Berry was also engaged in the livery business and at one time was Vive President of The Merchants State Bank. After selling their Hotel to C.V. Swanson, Mr. and Mrs. Berry spent some time in Minnesota, later returning and again engaging in the mercantile business at Genoa. Hunting and checkers were Mr. Berry's hobbies. Tom was always jovial, he had a hearty greeting for friends and neighbors. >From "A Brief History of Velva, N.D." by Oscar Anderson in 1955. "Old Tom always delighted in telling his customers the early experiences of his travels to Devils Lake to bring supplies, before the Railroad was built. Tom built the present fine three story Hotel Berry. In those early days a meal ticket good for 21 meals , could be bought for $2.50." This page was published in the "Journal-Register on June 21, 1979. It was an article called "Yester Years" by Mabel Olsen. A special thanks to the Duncan family in Oregon - Mary E. (Berry) Stickels's great great grand daughter - for this information. Thomas F. Berry was son of William and Rachel (Pendroy) Berry. Rachel Pendroy was a daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy. Read about Tom Berry's sister Eliza Masteller

    3. I found this tonight as Andrew Smothers was from Washington county, I thought it interesting the different names for the same county. Noah Washington County, Virginia The first white settlers arrived in what is present day Washington County in the 1760's. Daniel Boone explored this area during his expeditions to Kentucky. His dogs were attacked by wolfs near present day Abingdon., as a result he called the Abingdon area, Wolf Hills. Washington County was formed from Fincastle County in 1777, the county seat, Abingdon was formed in 1778. The orginal Washington County, VA in addition to containing some of the other present day surrounding counties also contained what is today, Sullivan County, TN. Ancestor Counties of Washington Co. Missouri Confederate Soldiers Daniel Smothers Missouri, 4th Calvary, Company G (brother to William) William McSmithers Missouri, 4th Calvary, Company I, Sgt. I find it curious that upon searching for the surname McSmithers/McSmither that there is almost no McSmithers or McSmither any where, found one McSmither in Virginia, and one McSmithers a fictional character in Canada, wonder if this could also be another spelling of Smithers\Smothers. In the 1790-1870 Ohio census there is 92 Smothers listed as head of household. Do you know which county Rachel was from? There was also a lot of Smothers in Illinois, there was even a town called Smothersville. I have a lot of information on the Illinois Smothers, but not much on the Ohio ones. 3. As an aside/connection to all this: Elizabeth Smothers, b 1818 TN, daughter of John, b 1791-92 NC, and Rebecca Smothers, was married to Thomas Reed. I do not have a date/place for the marriage, but it likely took place in TN. I wonder if Elizabeth's husband Thomas Reed is related to the sons/heirs mentioned in James Reed's will, below? The James Reed will seems to point to John Smothers, b 1791-92 NC, who married Rebecca as having a father named John. 3. cemetery A very grateful thanks to Dennis Ronfeldt for all the work getting and volunteering this information. Wellington Cemetery Woodbury County Iowa Located 1 mile east of Smithland, Iowa on SH 141 then 1/2 mile north on Lenox Ave. a gravel road. Then east up a farm field to the top of the hill. Revised in 1997. Compiled by Dennis Ronfeldt. I found out that all of the Wellington Cemetery records are lost forever, and all of the burials in the cemetery. I was told that years ago the caretaker and record keeper shot himself, and that blood was all over the cemetery record book. So someone just threw out the records for the cemetery, not thinking. Also that the Wellington Cemetery grave lots are all full, their is know empty grave sites. If this is true then over half of the markers or stones are gone, and those people's names are also lost forever. This is a Pioneer Cemetery, was first platted as Little Sioux Twp. Cemetery #3 before Oto Twp. was created. Once called Advent, and Hollister Cemetery, now Wellington. In Section SE 1/4 of Oto Twp. it is fenced in and is mowed, stones need work, some knocked over. 3. KINFOLKS by Evelyn Flood WILLIE NELSON'S NEWTON COUNTY CONNECTIONS. Did you know Willie Nelson's parents were married in Newton County? Ira NELSON 18 of Pindall and Myrle GREENHAW 17 of Pindall(Searcy Co) were married 6 September 1929 right there in Newton County. Ira was son of William Alfred NELSON and Nancy SMOTHERS. Myrle Greenhaw's parents were William Alex GREENHAW and Bertha REYNOLDS. William Alex and Bertha REYNOLDS GREENHAW are buried in Glencoe Cemetery, Searcy County, Arkansas. William Alex and Bertha had the following children: Earl George GREENHAW, Myrle, William Henry "Buck", Carl George and Sybil Edra GREENHAW. Bertha Reynolds Greenhaw's parents were James REYNOLDS ( RUNNELS\RANDLES) and Susan O'DANIEL. Bertha's sisters I have record of were Mary, Era and Lidie REYNOLDS(1900 Newton Co.Ark. Census-Prarie Township). Susan O'Daniel's parents William and Nancy ? O'DANIEL lived in Newton County from 1840s to 1900s. William O'Daniel, born 1800 in North Carolina, died December 1881 and is buried in Western Grove Cemetery,Newton Co. Mother Nancy was living with James and Susan REYNOLDS on 1900 Newton County census--it is unknown when and where Nancy ? O'Daniel died and is buried.William and Nancy O'DANIEL were also the parents of: Mary Jane, Elizabeth, Nancy Adeline, Martha E, Margaret, Matilda, and Lavina O'DANIEL. Ira and Myrle GREENHAW NELSON were parents of Bobbie Lee NELSON, born 1931 in Abbott, Texas and Willie Hugh NELSON, born 29 April 1933 in Abbott,Texas. In a recent TV interview, Willie stated he was raised by his grandmother (probably his NELSON grandmother). William Alex GREENHAW's parents were Daniel Gabriel GREENHAW and Lucy STANDRIDGE. They are both buried in Lurton Cemetery on Richland, Newton County,Arkansas. Their children besides William Alex GREENHAW, were Susie Jane GREGORY SHELTON, Mary Elizabeth BEARE, George William, Emily Tennessee HOOVER BLACK, John Henry and Ellen Arvilla EVERHART. My FLOOD children are descended from George W GREENHAW. and Margaret Lavina COOK.Many of my deceased husband's kinfolks still live in Newton County. My FLOOD children are related to many families. This is a labor of love.
