Subject: Claude Elmer Smothers Posted by: Judy Smith Message: Claude Elmer Smothers (A.K.A. Elmer Claude Smothers) Born in Clayton County, Iowa Circa November 1897, to James A. Smothers and Elizabeth Josephine Swisher (Daughter of Benjamin Lafayette Swisher, and Sarah Jane Day). Besides his half brother William John Smothers, and half sister Mary E. Smothers, Claude had five other siblings. James Smothers, Jr., Mary A. Smothers, George A. Smothers, Sarah Smothers, and Oliver Bertsel Smothers. According to Grant Smothers (son of William John Smothers), Claude was left handed. He also told me that Claude was an old time fiddle player, and a "Darn good one at that." I had also been told that he always had a "fancy" horse drawn buggy. At the age of twenty-three he married Bertha Westpfahl (daughter of John Westpfahl and Dora Held), on the 8 day of September 1904. Bertha was then 18 years of age. They were married in Windsor Township, Fayette County, Iowa. In the 1905 census for Fayette County Claude and Bertha were living in Hawkeye, Iowa. On the 1st day of June 1906, a son, Sidney Earl Smothers was born. Bertha died when Sidney was just an infant/toddler (date has not yet been discovered), and Claude took his young son to live with his half brother William and his family. I was told by Grant Smothers that Claude came one rainy night in the Fall (in a horse drawn buggy), and took "Earl" (as Grant called him), never to be seen again (at least by Grant). On the 12th day of March 1908, in Fayette County, Waucoma, Iowa, Elmer Claude Smothers married my grandmother, Myrtle Ella Monroe (daughter of Norman Monroe and Minnie Appleby Parker). To this union a son (my father) Cecil Bert Smothers was born, 7th day of January 1909. Elmer left Myrtle and their son when Cecil was just an infant (for reasons unknown), never to be heard from once again. Several years later Myrtle divorced Elmer (24th day of April 1913), and in the divorce decree she was granted back her maiden name of Monroe. Young Cecil was also granted the last name of Monroe. She then married a man named Paul Haus, and somewhere down the road Cecil assumed the last name of Haus (thus becoming Cecil Bert Haus). Meanwhile, according to personal letters and post cards, it seems young Sidney had been taken to live with Claude's brother James and his wife Maggie. Claude corresponded with them asking Maggie to find a someone to adopt "the boy." On the 6th day of January 1912, he was adopted by A. Prudhome and his wife Margaret, in Marinette County, State of Wisconsin. The letter Claude wrote to Maggie was postmarked February 8, 1911 from St. Paul Park, Minnesota. Mailed to Mrs. Maggie Smothers, Mt Hope, Wisconsin. In the letter Claude stated that he was going to Chicago to become a policeman. During my interview with Grant Smothers (8-5-1986) he told me that he had heard "Elmer" had quit drinking and went to Minneapolis, Minnesota to become a policeman. Also during this interview he stated that he thought Elmer died in 1943. However he did not know for certain. Where did he go? Is there another family after his marriage/divorce from Myrtle? When, where, and how did he die? Hopefully someday we will find the key to unlock this mystery. Submitted by Judy Smith (Nee Haus) (Information obtained from court documents, letters/postcards sent to family members, and interview with Grant Smothers.

I am unfamiliar with the first mentioned Smothers clan from Ohio. The Smothers (& others) who in 1812 left Salem Baptist Church, based in now Allen Co., KY, at Trammel Creek, which is on/near the Tennessee line, I am familiar with. They formed the Testament Baptist Church in what was then Sumner Co., TN, and I think is now Macon Co., TN. Surving Sumner Co., TN, court records, voter lists, tax lists, church records, etc., indicate William Smothers arrived in Sumner Co. about 1796. His wife seems to have been named Nancy, and she apparently was a known midwife in the region circa 1810. William seems to have been a part of the clan of Thomas Smothers (m Susannah Gilliam) of Orange Co., NC, whose descendants moved to Sumner/Smith Co., TN, in the 1796 to 1820 time frame. They later dipersed to other parts of Tennessee, southern Illinois, and Arkansas, circa 1820-1860. William & Nancy Smothers are likely candidates for the parents of Elish M. Smothers, b 1800 TN. I have your Jacob Smothers in my files, I believe. He was born abt 1789 in NC and had at least one wife named Nancy_____. Census record suggest Jacob was living in Sumner Co., TN, in 1820, and then was in Carroll Co., TN, up until at least 1850. In old age, 1860, he was living in Franklin Co., IL. I was not aware of the land grant you mentioned, but it seems to fit well with the census records for Jacob. Jacob possibly had brothers named Elisha M. Smothers and John Smothers, who were living near him in Carroll Co., TN. I have no proof that Jacob, Elisha, and John were siblings, but that seems to be the correct explanation. Jacobs father is much more of a guess -- it is likely he is related to the Thomas Smothers (m Susannah Gilliam) clan from Orange Co., NC, whose descendants settled in the area of Sumner/Smith Co., TN, are around 1796-1820. Notes from James Smithers, Miamisburg, Ohio. The first Smithers that we know of this time is Andrew Smothers/Smithers from the city of Abingdon, county of Washington in the state of Virginia. It is said that Andrew and Sarah were born and married in England. I was in Abindon, county of Washington in the state of Virginia in July, 1996. I copied an indenture between Andrew Smithers and his wife Sarah and Edward and Agnes Farris for a parcel of land Containing two hundred sixty acres lying and being in the county of Washington, a branch of the middle fork of the Holstein River. Andrew paid 90 pounds the current money of Virginia. The date was May 1, 1793. On November 23, 1793 Andrew and wife Sarah sold to a William Reagan the above same land for 150 pounds ocated on a branch of the middle fork of the Holstein River. I would say that he was a shewrd business man. They must have left shortly after this event because he shows up in Bath County, Ky. in the early 1800's. Andrew Smithers/Smothers wrote a will in Bath County, Ky., dated Sep. 4, 1824. In his will he states that his wife Elizabeth should have 50 acres of land, as long as she lives a single life. If she remarries, she is only to have her third of the place, and at her death it is to return to his children. He also leaves his wife one third part of all his personal estate. The balance of hs estate was to be divided amongst his children equally, that is to say Thomas Smathers, Joseph Smathers, Ann Jackson, Martha Fowler, Margaret Bristo, Sally Hopkins, Hugh Smathers, and he leaves to John Smathers, Elizabeth Fuget and Susanna Gipson, one dollar each. He appoints John McNabb as his Executor in his last will and statement. Given under my hand this 4th day of September, 1824. Names taken from will of Andrew Smothers filed 1824 Bath county, Ky.
