    1. Tenn lst Settlers & Soldiers
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. BOOK LINKS: TENNESSEE'S FIRST SETTLERS & SOLDIERS, by Edward McAmis. This is an edited excerpt from the notice McAmis sent to his mailing list in August 2000 when TENNESSEE'S FIRST SETTLERS & SOLDIERS was published. It covers . . . circa 1770 to 1815 and primarily Greene County, Tennessee, although not entirely. The first index covers pages 1 through 670 and includes more than 3,500 surnames of the first settlers and soldiers to today's Greene County. The entire book has more than 10,000 surnames and when known I have included with each name in the first index, full name and spouse's name, issue, date of birth and death, and where each occurred, country of origin, nationality, religion, port of entry into the American Colonies and ships' names. I have entered some information on the first churches of these settlers in their original lands;special attention has been given to the wives of the settlers by placing their names right along with the alphabetized list of males using their maiden or married name, including their parents' names, if known, and any other early information I have. Other records included: early land and tax records; churches and cemeteries; collections of veterans of the French & Indian War, Revolutionary War, and War of 1812; preachers;justices of the peace; also boundaries of the tax and militia districts, description of the civil districts and names of the settlers or descendants living on the borders of the districts.(Hardbound, 793 pp., index, published August 2000, $61 postpaid.ORDER FROM: Mrs. Eleanor McAmis [email protected] [Edward McAmis died 15 December 2000. Please e-mail Mrs. McAmis for the ordering address or if you have any questions about the book.]) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

    3. From: "Dee Wesser" <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 16:16:45 -0500 Nena The Rootwalker list only covers part of the TN counties and I am ignorant as to the list covered. Any way Stan and Vanessa who are in charge of this group have several books and are always willing to do lookups for people and when they go to the Archives they are willing to do searches for any on the list that request it. As soon as Stan checks in I know he will let you know where to find the counties the list covers. I am pretty sure Robertson is one of them I have seen people request items for. Please excuse me for not being able to help you on the counties. Just hang in there and Stan will give you answers that I haven't been able to give. I know one thing you will not find a better group for being helpful than this list.Dee _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

    1. Reunion
    2. Noah
    3. Finally a chance for an update on the reunion. The reunion went off great, we had 13 there, not as many as last year, but we still had a great time. Nate and Sharon Smothers came in from Washington, Cal and Audrey came in from Kentucky, and Sara Smothers Hollis came in from Springfield, Missouri, along with Noah's family. I received several last minute cancellations and shared those letters with the ones present. We still had a wonderful time. It was great to be able to place some faces with those that we communicate with over the net. After the reunion Nate, Sharon, Cal and Audrey came over and we spent several hours together, mostly laughing and having a great time. If there is anyone who can make it, in October there will be another Smothers Reunion, to be held in Lebanon, Kentucky, on the last Sunday of the month. I encourage anyone that can make it to please do, as my wife and I went last fall and really enjoyed ourselves. The day after the reunion, I had the misfortune of having to take my computer to the shop, by the way it is still there. We are getting ready to leave on vacation and I noticed that the extended warranty was about to expire, not enough time to make it until after vacation, so I hurried over to the computer service center, thinking that I would have it back that day, no they had to send it off for repairs and now I will be lucky to get it back before leaving. No problem, just use my son's, wrong again, could not get my email downloaded so I could view it. Took 5 days for me to finally figure out what I needed to do, My wife and I had Vacation Bible School all week so that took up a lot of our time. Finally get back on line, and now have 394 messages to try to catch up on. On top of everything else our server has been sold so right now it is running with no one watching it, the change is to take place this Thursday, so now will have to set up both computers again, I think that! we are going to enjoy our vacation. As far as new Smothers resesarchers, Sara Smothers Hollis is the newest that I am aware of, she is researching the John Crittendon Smothers line, born 9-15-1852 in Todd City, Kentucky, son is John Nicholas Smothers, if anyone can help Sara out you may contact her at [email protected] , Sara would welcome any information that anyone can provide. Well time to go, thanks to all who made the reunion, your the best. Noah and Pat

    3. To all: I received this morning and thought it might be of help to someone. Carole in SC " If you have been procrastinating sending off for a Social Security application for any of your ancestors, now is the time to do it! Effective July 1, 2001, there will be a major fee increase for processing requests for copies of original applications for Social Security cards and for computer extracts of this information. This has been confirmed with Roger Williams in the FOIA office of the SSA. New Fees (effective July 1, 2001): Copies of the original application for a Social Security card (Form SS-5) will cost $27 if the social security number is provided, and $29 if it is not provided. These fees were previously $7 and $16.50, respectively. Computer extracts of the application will cost $16 with the number and $18 without. Requests postmarked prior to July 1, 2001, will not be subject to the new fees. So, if you've procrastinated on your requests, get them in now! Requests posted on or after July 1, 2001, will be returned if they do not include the new amount and a credit card number has not been provided to charge for additional costs." 1. NA passing for Negro
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. From another List but seemed interesting enough to pass on when searching census. Did also find something else interesting. Sometimes if you can't find a ancestor on a regular census, look on the Slave census, thats how cuz and I found a brother to our ggg grandfather as he owned some slaves. also try this...the M in Smeathers was upside down and he was listed as SWEATHERS...so something else to think about...happy hunting~~Nena....How did the REUNION go all that went??? was born and lived in There is where I lose him. My belief is that his mother and or father were at least part Native American. I believe was dark enough that he could pass for white, so is listed as Negro on the 1880 Census. This was common during that period, as after the Civil War, Negroes were able to travel, acquire land etc. Native Americans could not. There were restrictions on the movement of Native Americans. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
