    3. Yes, it sure is nice to know our tribe is alive and well!!..I want just want to wish everyone a holly jolly season that is upon us!! Noah, where are you doing the 1910/20 census..ancestry?? Just curious.... This Emma Smothers, thats 10y in 1880 [b 1870]..who do you think she belongs tooo...a dec'd family?? that Depriest name is familiar, could it be her mother's family? Since their oldest appears to be 16, they could have had a dau older, right? Wonder if that Johnson gal also like grand dau. The 1880 I thought, though did list grdau/son etc...maybe not. ...boy, looking over so many names lately, I must start writing names down. Is Emma yr MO Smothers? Dont ya just love the way that 1880 census is set up at LDS site...boy I do, you can just do all sorts of combinations of things to find someone, plus go thru forward/backwards the HH, and that really is a neat clue for families. Can you imagine how long it must have taken LDS to do that census, wow! I think we surely owe them a big debt of thanks! And all for us and FREE. Now if only ancestry.com would do some indexing on those Images, it sure would help. cuz Deb and I were looking for someone last nite and not knowing the township esp or having an index, I ran across the one name I was searching..had over 300 images to look thru..I truly just gave up. Then, bless her heart, Deb went to the 1880 LDS and found exactly what we were looking for! he he~~Nena From: "Noah Smothers" <nsmother@socket.net> So good to see all the activity tonight, have been busy working on the 1880 1910 and 1920 census.>Noah Household: Abraham DEPRIEST Self M Male W 47 IL Farmer IN OH Elisabeth DEPRIEST Wife M Female W 50 MO KY KY Philip E. 3. I don't know for sure Jan, and since all of our Smothers are gone, we probably never will, but one possibility that I have read about is the slavery issue. Tennessee was a Confederate State, and Illinois was Union, and some in Tennessee were abolitionists. Plus, Illinois was kind of the frontier at that time, with lots of land, water, etc. It seems like many of the sons left Tennessee to stake their own land claims in Illinois. Maybe the family farms were getting too crowded. The riverboats and ferries also made travel into another state easier. These are just speculation. The interesting part is that they all ended up within a 2 county area in Southern Illinois, Franklin and Williamson. My Townsend/Stoker grandmother moved with her children after her husband William W. Stoker died. She then married a Tennessee Smothers, William Harrison Smothers and he followed her to Illinois. However, after their divorce, he moved back to Benton County, TN to be with his family. There must have been a first Smothers to move, and then all the rest came too. I truly believe that all of the Illinois Smothers are connected one way or another. glenda meyers -----Original Message----- From: Jan & Joe Smothers [mailto:joejan@viclink.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 03, 2002 9:04 PM To: SMOTHERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SMOTHERS] Tn Smothers marriages Hello list, Question. 2. Nena Smothers
    3. Doesn't someone have FARMER's in their line...just thought I'd pass this on..Nena Surnames in this biography are: Williams, Beauchamp, Farmer, Manhart, PAUL B. WILLIAMS, head of the department of physical education in the Ball State Teachers College at Muncie, dedicated his career to educational work when a young man. When he came to Muncie he resigned his office as superintendent of schools of Vigo County. It was in that section of Indiana that he was born and grew up. His birth occurred in Sullivan County, August 8, 1892. His father, **Elbert Williams**, was born in Shelby County, Indiana, where the family was established in pioneer days. After getting his education he moved to Sullivan County, about 18’s, and since 1895 has lived in Vigo County. Farming has been his chief occupation. He still lives on the farm and gives his time to its duties. **Elbert Williams married Capitola Beauchamp, who was born in Vigo County. Her father, W. Beauchamp, for two terms served in the Indiana House of Representatives from Vigo County. He was a farmer and stock raiser and a very active Democrat. He and his wife are buried in Sullivan County. Capitola Beauchamp was educated in public schools and was a student in the State Normal School at Terre Haute when most of the buildings of that institution were destroyed by fire. She is an active member of the Church of Christ, while her husband is a Baptist. She is a member of the Eastern Star. Their home is a farm in Prairie Creek Township, Virgo County. Their only other child was Toney Williams, who was killed in 1929 in an accident at the Terre Haute Malleable Iron Company’s plant. Paul B. Williams grew up on a farm, was educated in district schools in Vigo County, graduated from the Prairie Creek and Pimento High School, and in 1919 received his A. B. degree in the Indiana State Normal School at Terre Haute. Since then he has done a great deal of graduate study in the Columbia University Teachers College, from which he received the Master of Arts degree in 1927. Mr. Williams began teaching in 1911 and had two years of experience in charge of a rural school in Vigo County. Following that came five years of teaching in a consolidated school and for one year he was with a consolidated school in Illinois. In 1920 he was elected to the office of county superintendent of schools of Vigo County, but after serving four months resigned to come to Muncie and become the head of the department of physical education and dean of men at the Ball State Teachers College. His office as head of this department is in the magnificent Ball Gymnasium. Mr. Williams did his bit in the World war, being with the colors for twenty-one months. He entered the service in 1917, received his initial training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, was then transferred to Camp Taylor at Louisville, Kentucky, and on being transferred to the Aviation Corps took his ground schoolwork at the University of Texas. He was sent to Love Field at Dallas, received his commission as second lieutenant in June, 1918, and was assigned duty as a flying instructor for a few months. He received his honorable discharge in December, 1918, and still holds a pilot’s license in the Aviation Corps. He is a member of Delaware Post No. 19 of the American Legion. Mr. Williams has been very active in Kiwanis Club work. He is affiliated with Prairie Creek Lodge No. 598, A. F. and A. M., is a member of the Dallas Consistory of the Scottish Rite, the Zora Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Terre Haute. He is a member of the national educational fraternity, the Phi Delta Kappa, the National Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, is a Republican and has been prominent in the First Presbyterian Church of Muncie, being secretary of the Men’s Club and president of the Men’s Bible Class. He married at Terre Haute, July 14, 1918, Miss Kathryn Farmer, daughter of G. E. and Effie (Manhart) Farmer. Her father is a well-to-do farmer and stockman in Vigo County. Mrs. Williams attended public schools there and the Indiana State Normal at Terre Haute, taught for a year in Vigo County and has always been deeply interested in all phases of educational progress. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Eastern Star Chapter, the Woman’s Club and the Matinee Musical Club. Mr. and Mrs. Williams have three children, Dorothy Laverne, Helen Irene and Robert Paul. John prob migrated to Ky from there. [Grass/Smeathers/Hynes/Duvall intermarried families] Daniel Grass, the lone survivor of his family, who had been killed in Kentucky, was taken into the home of Dr. William R. Hynes, of Bardstown, Kentucky. He married Jane Smeathers from the settlement of Yellow Banks and tradition tells us that he came here in the interest of Dr. Hynes. This seems to be true because of the various land transactions. On May 9, 1807, Daniel Grass made the first land entry on the territory where Rockport now stands. **Sometime later he built a log house south of Rockport and moved his family and became the first permanent settler. He changed the name to Mt. Duvall, in honor of Col. William Duvall, a Kentucky friend. ** [DUVALL M INTO HYNES, THE FOSTER FAMILY THAT REARED DANIEL GRASS] On March 11, 1808, **William Berry bought land on the river below Grass and lived on his houseboat with is family until a cabin in the woods could be constructed.
