Now is a good time to consider joining our Smith surname DNA project if you are a male Smith or have male Smith relatives. The holidays are approaching, when you are likely to be getting together with family and can recruit male Smiths to join or persuade others in your family to chip in toward the cost of the DNA testing. For more information about our project, see our updated web page at: http://www.smithconnections.com. If your Smiths lived in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or New York and you are hitting brick walls in trying to trace them back in time, you may want to participate in this project. We aim to identify Smith (Smithe, Smyth, and Smythe) families that lived in these states before the 20th Century. Because this is a Y-chromosome DNA study, participants who contribute the DNA sample (a simple cheek swab) need to be male Smiths. If you'd like more information, please contact me at cgaziano@prodigy.net. You may also join by clicking on http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=J83140. Note that there also is a Southern Smiths DNA project at http://www.southernsmiths.org. These projects can be helpful in ruling suspected relationships in or out and in determining new geographic areas in which to search. I have added three new naturalization databases to the Smith/Smythe section of my website. They cover NY city and state Smith/Smythes from 1715 to 1848. Also new to the site, thanks to Judy Herbert, births, marriages and members' list of the Brooklyn 1st Methodist Episcopal Church which cover Smiths/Smythes for years 1795-1878. You can access the databases by going to the URL below my name. I have updated the Smith/Smythe section of my website with a new Surname Registry where you can submit you Smith/Smythes and hopefully find connections. I found a Flynn cousin, this year, from a posting I made three years ago. I also have some Smith/Smythe marriages to the website that I have I have from various sources from 1700s and 1800s. So far, I have online some from NYS, VA, CT, AR, KY and New York City. I have also added a form to the marriage page where you can enter any Smith/Smythe marriages you may have. I plan to update both pages on a monthly basis. You can find them by going to the URL below my name. Hi all .... I have just taken over this list and see there is only 12 of us subscribed to the list so it shouldn't be such a burden to introduce ourselves and give out Smithe connections. The Smiths of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Yorksurname DNA project is expanding to include all of the New England states because of many requests to do so. This project aims to identify Smith (Smithe, Smyth, and Smythe) families that lived in these states before the 20th Century. Because this is a Y-chromosome DNA study, participants who contribute the DNA sample (a simple cheek swab) need to be male Smiths. If you are a male Smith or have living male Smiths in your line, you may wish to participate directly or by recruiting a participant. If you'd like more information, please contact me at cgaziano@prodigy.net. We have a web page at http://www.smithconnections.com. (People may also join by clicking on http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=J83140.) The DNA samples are processed by Family Tree DNA, www.familytreedna.com, through a lab at the University of Arizona. Participants can order 12-marker, 25-marker, or 37-marker tests. "Markers" are alleles in certain positions on chromosomes. If they begin with a 12-marker test, they can choose to upgrade to a 25- or 37-marker test. If they begin with 25 markers, they can upgrade later, if desired, to a 37-marker test. The costs of the various options are described on the smithconnections.com web site. We receive a reduced rate because of being a group. If your Smiths lived in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or New York and you are hitting brick walls in trying to trace them back in time, you may want to consider participation in this project. Note that there also is a Southern Smiths DNA project, which is well described at http://www.southernsmiths.org. These projects can be helpful in ruling suspected relationships in or out and in determining new geographic areas in which to search. There isn't a separate "Smithe" surname DNA project. There are 2 Smith DNA projects, one for Southern Smiths and one for Smiths who lived in CT, MA, & NY before the 20th century. I am searching for the decendants of George Webster Smith bank clerk born Camberwell 1878 who married Annie Ellen Perry in September 1907 daughter of Alfred Perry deceased and Elizabeth nee Harvey. They came from the Wandsworth/Dulwich/Clapham areas and were married in Wandsworth. My interest comes from the Perry side and as I have now found a Smith connection I am keen to follow it up. I am not researching any other Smith line but can confirm the following as being George Webster Smith's immediate family in the 1881 census. There were other children in the 1901 census but I have mislaid the data at present. If anyone can help I would be most grateful.
