Emma died 10 Apr 1931 in Youngsville, PA and is buried in the Youngsville Cemetery in Youngsville, PA. Her husband Alfred Monroe SWEETING was born 7 Sept 1872 in Warren Co., PA to parents William Roger SWEETING (1841-1915) and Laura A. SMITH (1850-1921). Alfred died 8 Aug 1937 in Warren, PA and is buried along with his wife in the Youngsville Cemetery. Census records provide the following details: 1880 census of Glade, PA: William R. 1. Re: [SMITH-PA] SIEGFRIED - SMITH Family Photographs
    2. I admire your motivation to find descendants of the subject in the photos you found. I wish I could help but cannot. I've been helpful in similar events in the past and thank you for your worthy efforts. Quentin Cabell Smith -----Original Message----- From: Shelley Cardiel <cardiels@comcast.net> To: smith-pa <smith-pa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thu, Oct 19, 2017 11:52 am Subject: [SMITH-PA] SIEGFRIED - SMITH Family Photographs I've "rescued" three photographs belonging to the SIEGFRIED Family of Hamburg, PA. The first photograph is identified with the name Charles SIEGFRIED of Hamburg, PA. The photograph is of a woman who is likely in her 40's at the time the photograph was taken, sometime in the 1880's. Notes on the back of the photograph appear to relate to the order made by Charles of a larger version of the photograph. I'm guessing that this photograph is likely the wife of Charles SIEGFRIED, who I believe is Ellen E. SMITH SIEGFRIED. The second photograph is of a young woman taken at the same studio sometime in the 1880's. The young woman resembles Mrs. SIEGFRIED and appears to be in her teens or 20's at the time it was taken, maybe a sister. The third photograph is again taken at this same studio, in the 1880's and is of an older woman, likely in her 60's at the time. I'm wondering if this might be the Mother of Charles or of Ellen SIEGFRIED. The photographs were all removed from the same photograph album so we definitely know that they are connected, however, two of them have no name written on them to identify the subjects for sure. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family: Ellenora E. "Ellen" SMITH was b. 11 Dec 1846 in Hamburg, PA and married Charles Howard SIEGFRIED (b. 29 Nov 1841 in Hamburg, PA to Jacob SIEGFRIED and Mary Margaret "Polly" HAIN) and together they had five children including, Polly Ann SIEGFRIED (1869-1876); Charles Edmond SIEGFRIED (1873-1879); Howard Jacob "Harry" SIEGFRIED b. 28 or 29 Sept 1877 or 1878 in Hamburg, PA; Elmer Titus Adams SIEGFRIED (1881-1967); and George D. SIEGFRIED (1883-1923). Charles died 29 Mar 1916 in Hamburg, PA. Ellen died 26 Nov 1923 and is buried in the Saint John's Cemetery in Hamburg, PA along with her husband. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photographs can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. 3. I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Hugh SMITH which was likely taken in the 1890's. There is no studio or location indicated on the photograph, however, it was located along with other photographs from Pennsylvania and New Jersey so it is likely from one of those areas of the country. Hugh is identified as 2 years old when the photograph was taken. I'm hoping to be able to return the photograph to family and would appreciate you contacting me at your earliest convenience if you believe Hugh may be a member of your family. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [SMITH-PA] New List Admin
    2. Hi everyone- SMITH can be a challenge to research as we all know and I hope that the list can be revived and provide a resource for those searching for SMITHs in Pennsylvania. Since DNA (Y, mtDNA, and autosomal testing) has become an integral part of our research and may prove especially valuable when tracing a common surname or ancestry discussion of SMITH DNA testing and kit numbers and comparisons with matching SMITH cousins is welcome on this list as long as the research/testing includes SMITHs who lived in PA. I'll start things off by telling you that my grandmother is a SMITH: Arra Lida SMITH of York County, Pennsylvania, USA. Her SMITHs were Pennsylvania German and most likely were SCHMIDT or some other Germanic spelling back in Germany but ever since they have been in PA dating from the mid-1700s the surname has been spelled SMITH. Her father was James H. SMITH who died in York PA. Before James was Samuel Leander SMITH and before that a succession of Barny/Barnhardt/Bernard SMITHs. Joan, admin SMITH@rootsweb.com

    1. [SMITH-PA] Johnson Smith of Philadelphia PA
    2. Marjorie Telerski
    3. I have a copy of a very old family history that tells the following story. Jean MacKinsey eloped from Scotland with her music teacher Johnson Smith Sr. When Jean and husband needed help her father( a merchant seaman)sent goods to set up a store. Jean ran a shop at 8th and Market. Johnson developed TB and he and Jean went back to Scotland to seek treatment. They left their two children -twins- Johnson Jr and Sarah with a neighbor in Philadelphia. When their money ran out they were bound to a Quaker couple named Lewis to work their farm in Springfield PA. Does anyone recognize this story or have ideas as to how to check out the story? From census records Johnson Smith Sr. was born 1805 d. 1830 and son born 1827. Johnson Smith Jr. married Margaret Veronica Grant.
