This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: smith, ody, jester Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VJIBAEB/28531.1 Message Board Post: These are not my Smiths, but I did a few searches for you. 1880 Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA Smith Family Job(sic) B. 23 PA PA PA Miner Lucy 24 PA Wales PA (Joseph Smith married Lucy Ody on 09 Jun 1876 in Pittsburgh) William P. 9 PA Cora A.(sic) 3 mos PA (born Feb) It's unclear whether William is John and Lucy's son, or whether he is the offspring of one or the other from a previous relationship. He was clearly born prior to their marriage. They consistently list their marriage year as about 1876 in census records. 1900 South Fayette, Allegheny, PA Smith Family Joseph Oct 1855/6? (44) PA PA PA Coal Miner Lucy Mar 1856 (44) PA PA PA Mamie Jun 1883 (17) PA Bertha Aug 1885 (14) PA Charles Jul 1887 (12) PA Pearl Aug 1890 (9) PA Alice Apr 1893 (7) PA Thomas Jester ? 1876 (24) PA PA PA (This would appear to be Elexander's brother. He married Cora's sister, Mamie (Mary) Smith on 31 Dec 1900 in Allegheny Co.) Listed immediately above Joseph is the family of his son William. William's wife, Bertha, and all but the youngest of his children were born in Ohio. Other census records indicate that at least one of Joseph and Lucy's children (Charles) was also born in OH. 1910 St. Clair Twp, Allegheny, PA Smith Family Joseph B. 53 PA PA PA Coal Miner Lucy 53 PA Wales PA Charles 23 PA Alice 17 PA Charles may be listed twice in this census. There is a Charles Smith, 22, born in OH listed with Cora in 1910. Cora's sister Mary (Mamie) Smith Jester is also in her household in 1910. 1920 Smith, Washington, PA Smith Family Joseph 63 PA PA PA Lucie(sic) 63 PA Wales PA Charles 32 OH Lucy appears to be the daughter of John Ody <1820> and Sarah [?] <1839>. In 1850 an Ann Ody <1785> is listed with John, likely to be his mother. John consistently lists his birthplace as England, But a person, Edwin Ody, who is probably his brother always lists his place of birth as Wales. Ann Ody was born in England, Sarah Ody in PA. In 1880 John Ody is listed in the Allegheny County Home suffering from asthma, probably Black Lung Disease from working in the coal mines. It is likely that he died there. I can't reliably place Joseph Smith prior to 1880. I hope this helps. Debby
