Smith, an Army surgeon posted at Fort Bayard, NM, married Alice Kennon (daughter of an ancestor of mine), 5 March 1877 at the Church of St Vincent De Paul, Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico. They ended up in Grants Pass, Oregon but still had ties to NM. The reason I believe there's a connection is that Alice's brother was named Wilfred--and she might have named her son after her brother. It's just a guess, and I still am working on where Robert Smith came from. If you think any of this is a "fit," please email me and we can compare notes, as I have the Kennon ancestry fixed back to 1600s.
