There are three Smith DNA projects that I know of. I administer the Northeastern Smiths DNA project. It is for male Smiths whose Smith ancestors lived in New England (CT, ME, VT, NH, RI, & MA), as well as PA, NY, OH, & NJ. This kind of research is a useful tool to supplement research of primary documents. It can help find other researchers who are related, and it can help you rule in or out relationship to specific persons if their descendants are participating. It can also help to point you to other geographic areas in which to search. We have a web page at http://www.smithconnections.com. Participants must be male Smiths because the genetic characteristic measured (the Y chromosome) is passed along the male line from father to son. The DNA test involves a simple cheek swab that is analyzed by a research lab at a discounted price for members of our group. Interested people who are not male Smiths may wish to recruit a male Smith of their line to participate. For instance, I am a female with the maiden name of Smith who recruited my first cousin, Bill Smith, to take part, and he and I are sharing the cost of the tests.
