"B.J." Smith, Sr, 74, 147 Seneca St, died Saturday, March 18 1898 in Corning Hospital following a sudden heart illness. He was born Feb 3, 1915 in Corning to Joseph Bernard and Hannora Sullivan Smith. He was a lifetime resident of Corning and graduated from St Patrick's School. Corning Free Academy and Corning Business School. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, 33 rd Division in the South Pacific. He married Celia A. Serdula Feb 7 1948 in St. Mary's church. He was a member of St Vincent's de Paul Church, the Corning American Legion Post, of which he was past commander in 1950 and a past county commander; the Crystal City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post; the executive board of the Steuben Area Council Boy Scouts of America; Corning Rotary Club, of which he served as president in 1965. He was given the Paul Harris Fellowship Rotary International's highest award, in 1986. He began working at the W.E. Brown and Co. "Brown's Cigar Store" in 1931. He became partners with Harry Brown in 1947. He purchased the business in 1948 following Brown's death. He was a director of the Retail Tobacco Dealers of America. He was a member of the National association of Tobacco Distributors, the state Tobacco and Candy Association, the Corning Merchants Association, the Corning Chamber of Commerce, The Finger Lakes Association. He served as a Corning Police commissioner for 16 years and had been a volunteer fireman for 13 years. He was a member of the Steuben County Board of Supervisor (legislators) as Democratic representative from the city of Corning, 1797 - 1985. He was third vice president of the Steuben County Democratic Committee and a member of the zoning appeals review board. Surviving are: his wife; four sons, Joseph Michael of Port Huron, MI; David Bernard of Dale City, VA, Terence of Corning, Bernard Joseph Jr. of Corning; three daughters, Maureen (Mrs Laurence) Foster of Wecosville, PA, Kristine Smith of Fairport, Sue Ellen Smith of Corning; three granddaughters, three grandsons, several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9pm today in the Haughey Funeral Home. An American Legion Memorial Service will be 8:30pm Monday in the funeral home. A prayer service will be there 9:30 am Tuesday followed by Mass of Christian Burial and Committal at 10am in St Vincent de Paul Church, the Rev. Robert C. MacNamara celebrant.
