SMITH DIES IN AURORA ON NOVEMBER 19 Thomas J. Smith, a longtime Aurora business man, died Thursday, Nov. 19, following a short illness. Funeral services for Mr. Smith were held Saturday, Nov. 21 in the chapel of the Higby Mortuary. The Rev. Merwyn Davidson, pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the Aurora Cemetery. Casketbearers were Keith Ernst, Gene Jensen, Ike Kilewer, Deryl Strong, Vic Thompson and Clifford VanWormer. Thomas J. Smith was born in David City, the son of Thomas H. and Catherine Nicholas [sic] Smith. As a small boy he moved with his parents to Giltner. They resided there a short time and then moved to Aurora, where he had since resided. He was married to Eva Stuart. She preceded him in death in 1936. On June 23, 1941 he was married to Adah Butterfield in Smith Center, Kans. Tom was a barber in Aurora for many years and was actively engaged in sports for many years and served as manager for baseball teams and trained boxers. He had a keen interest in sports up to the time of his death. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aurora. Those who survive are his wife, Adah; three sons, Thomas H. Smith of Fort Bragg, N. C., Michael J. Smith of Vietnam and Patrick O. Smith, at home; two step-sons, Monty Joe Butterfield of Millard and Gary Butterfield of St. Charles, Mo.; four sisters, Mrs. Eva Daggett of Ellensburg, Wash,; Mrs. Lila Sellers of Spokane, Wash,; and Mrs. Lela Hamilton and Mrs. Cecile Strong, both of Aurora; three grandchildren and many other relatives and close friends. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. __________ Note: Thomas Jefferson Smith was the daughter of Thomas Hill Smith & Katherine Georgia "Kate" Nichols. ____________________ From "Aurora News-Register" [Aurora, Hamilton Co., NE], 29 May 1980: Adah B. Smith, daughter of Ellis and Maude Kline Lancaster, was born at Aurora, Nebraska on October 1, 1915. Her death occurred at St. Charles, Missouri, on May 18, 1980 at the age of 64 years, 7 months and 17 days. She has spent most of her lifetime in Aurora and attended the Aurora Public Schools. In 1931 she was married to Lloyd Butterfield. Two sons were born to them Adah operated a cafe in Aurora for several years and later had been employed in local cafes. Employed at Bonnavilla the past few years. On June 23, 1941 she was united in marriage to Thomas J. Smith, Jr., at Smith Center, Kansas. Three sons were born to them. Her husband preceded her in death on November 19, 1970. She had continued to reside in Aurora until just a short time ago, when, because of her failing health, she had gone to St. Charles, Missouri to be near three of her sons. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Federated Church in Aurora. Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by one son, Monty Joe Butterfield, her parents and one sister Mrs. Marlene Gentzler. Those who remain to cherish her memory are four sons, Gary Butterfield of St. Charles, Missouri; Thomas H. Smith of Kearney, Nebr., Patrick O. Smith and Michael J. Smith of St. Charles, Missouri; one sister Mrs. Gladys Duff of Grand Island; six grandchildren and other relatives and many close friends. __________ Note: Adah’s grandmother, Adah Belle Nichols Kline, and her husband’s mother, Katherine Georgia "Kate" Nichols Smith, were sisters. ____________________
