Daniel Smith was a business partner and friend of Francis Gurney of Philadelphia. In Martin's History of Chester, County and Family Histories of PA: Daniel Smith enetered at an early age the counting house of Francis Gurney of Phila., who was engaged in West India trade and remained there until he came of age. about 1776....He later joined a regiment commanded by his old friend and employer Col. Gurney and remained in his service for two years more..After the adoption of the Constitutuion of the US, Daniel Smith and Col. Gurney entered into business together, and were connected for 30 years."
